6 JOKE OF THE WEEK Jay went to a psychiatrist. Doc, he said, I ve got trouble. Every time I get into bed I think there is somebody under it. I get under the bed; I think there s somebody on top of it. Top, under, under top. I m going crazy! Just put yourself in my hands for two years, said the shrink. Come to me three times a week and I ll cure you. How much do you charge? A hundred dollars per visit. I ll think about it. Jay never went back. Some time later he met the doctor on the street. Why didn t you ever come to see me again? Asked the psychiatrist. For a hundred buck a visit? A bartender cured me for 10 dollars. Is that so! How? He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Page 6

10 WORD OF THE WEEK Endemic \en-dem-ik\ adjective - characteristic of or prevalent in a particular field, area, or environment - restricted or peculiar to a locality or region EXAMPLES A recent report identifies the country as a "failed state," citing endemic corruption at all levels of government. "Aucoin's research focuses on the development of rapid diagnostics as a resource to countries where disease is endemic and expanding." From an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal (Nevada), December 3, 2013 DID YOU KNOW? If you translate it literally, "endemic" means "in the population." It derives from the Greek "endēmos," which joins "en," meaning "in," and "dēmos," meaning "people" or "populace." "Endemic" is often used to characterize diseases that are generally found in a particular area; malaria, for example, is said to be endemic to tropical and subtropical regions. This use differs from that of the related word "epidemic" in that it indicates a more or less constant presence in a particular population or area rather than a sudden, severe outbreak within that region or group. 11 FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS: THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL 7:00 in the Community Room The Other Boleyn Girl is a 2008 drama film directed by Justin Chadwick. The screenplay by Peter Morgan was adapted from the 2001 novel of the same name by Philippa Gregory. It is a romanticized account of the lives of 16th-century aristocrats Mary Boleyn, one-time mistress of King Henry VIII, and her sister, Anne, who became the monarch's illfated second wife, though much history is distorted The Reviews. Great movie, and when it was over, my only complaint was there was not more! It was almost as good as the Tudors series, which provided details this movie left out The sweet irony of this film is Scarlett Johansson is actually an amazing recording artist and has put out two CDs to date. This is a beautiful film I am a great admirer of Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. Seeing the two of them together is such a special treat. I saw Ms Johansenn for the first time in The Man Who Never was with Billy Bob Thornton, and then made a point to see her in all her other films and now she is Woody Allen's latest Muse. I have caught Natalie Portman from her epic rise in the new Star Wars as Queen Amadala and then the cult film about the Walmart baby "Where the Heart is". Watching them both in period costume and rising to the occasion is a marvelous treat and I so enjoyed it. Page 11

Every other Saturday the Laconia Citizen publishes our Newspaper Column that usually has something to do with aging issues --- But you can also find it on our Facebook Page, on our Website or just by asking for copy. I can also add you to an list if you would like a copy sent to you automatically. AGING WELL ON THE RADIO EACH WEEK! Each Wednesday at 8:35 on 1350 WEZS, MBCC sponsors AGING WELL co-hosted by the Voice of the Lakes Region Allan Harrison along with MBCC s Jim Murray. On January 15 th Jim s Guests will be Catherine Turgeon and Kelly Lang who will talk about Emotional Freedom Technique. Allan might come away from this interview a changed man! FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX A Suggestion was made that desserts should be listed on the Menu. Let s do a little planning ahead What kind of events, activities and programs would you like to see for 2014? 16 CLOSING NOTES. Have you made your New Year s resolutions yet? Or maybe like me you have already broken a couple or maybe even a few! I have one that I want to recommend to each of you: This year find different kinds of ways to be involved in the life of MBCC. Don t hold back because you are new or because you are shy. Don t hold back because you are not sure about something. When in doubt begin by saying: I have an idea ---- Will anybody help me with You don t have to do things by yourself --- but you are needed to get things going sometime. When you take the collective creativity of everybody here there is no telling what you will come up with! Be especially careful out there with this changing weather snow is easy to deal with compared to ice and ice can pop up just about anywhere! Have a Great Week Howie Page 16
