Last week (just like the two weeks before ) there were 3 correct answers --- but not from the same 3 people. So what I don t know is if my selections are too difficult to find or if it isn t interesting enough? The photo at left is of an object that has always been in the Bistro and I have never known what it is. It is on display on the wall to the kitchen up high over the sink in the upper display area. Anybody know what it is? This week s is easier to find and so I expect that there will be more correct answers! I know you know what it is but do you know where he is? 4 JOKE OF THE WEEK Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time. The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return. Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them The first one who can use the words liver and cheese together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me. The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says I love liver and cheese. Oh, how childish, said the Poodle. That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever. She turned to the tall, shiny Golden Retriever and said How well can you do? Ummmm...I HATE liver and cheese, blurts the Golden Retriever. My, my, said the Poodle. I guess it s hopeless. That s just as dumb as the Lab s sentence. She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, How about you, little guy? The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell chihuahua. He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Lab and says... Liver alone. "It's common for headline-writers to refer to the Big Three automakers Ford, Chrysler, and GM as 'Detroit.' But that metonymy is misleading in a very important way. When Mark Antony asks the people of Rome to lend him their ears in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, he is employing the rhetorical device known as metonymy. Derived via Latin from Greek "metonymia" (from "meta-," meaning "among, with, or after," and "onyma," meaning "name"), metonymy often appears in news articles and headlines, as when journalists use the term "crown" to refer to a king or queen. Another common example is the use of an author's name to refer to works written by that person, as in "He is studying Hemingway." Metonymy is closely related to synecdoche, which refers to the naming of a part of something to refer to the whole thing (or vice versa), as in "We hired extra hands to help us." Read more at Page 8

When the school fires him, his devastated students rally behind him, mindful of the ways he has changed their lives. This is just a spectacular story. Combine that with some of the finest acting ever captured on film. Robin Williams gives a tour de force performance in what turns out to be a life lesson, not a movie. This is a must see for all ages and is sure to leave an impression on everyone. FLU SHOT REMINDER. It s that time of year.. Flu Shot time that is! Plans are underway to have a Flu Shot Clinic here mid October with confirmation of details to follow. But what I want to do here and now is to encourage the reluctant among you to take part if not for your own benefit then for the protection of the rest of us. Page 9

The following was shared with me by Nancy Thomason --- and while it is longer that what we might typically run it is important enough that you should read the whole thing! Thank you Nancy! FEMALE HEART ATTACKS I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is the best description I've ever read Women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have... you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in movies. Here is the story of one woman's experience with a heart attack. Page 11

12 I had a heart attack at about 10:30 PM with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might have brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking, 'A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up. A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you've been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you've swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn't have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation--the only trouble was that I hadn't taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m. After it seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasms), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. 'AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening -- we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, haven't we? I said aloud to myself and the cat, Dear God, I think I'm having a heart attack! I lowered the foot rest dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself, If this is a heart attack, I shouldn't be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else... but, on the other hand, if I don't, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in a moment. I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn't feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts. She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to un-bolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in. Page 12

13 I unlocked the door and then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don't remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the radiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like 'Have you taken any medications?') but I couldn't make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stints to hold open my right coronary artery. I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least minutes before calling 911, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents. Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand. 1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body, not the usual men's symptoms but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn't know they were having one and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation and go to bed, hoping they'll feel better in the morning when they wake up... which doesn't happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics if ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you've not felt before. It is better to have a 'false alarm' visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be! 2. Note that I said 'Call 911.' And if you can take an aspirin. Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER - you are a hazard to others on the road. Page 13

14 Do NOT have your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what's happening with you instead of the road. Do NOT call your doctor -- he doesn't know where you live and if it's at night you won't reach him anyway, and if it's daytime, his assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn't carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later. 3. Don't assume it couldn't be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it's unbelievably high and/or accompanied by high blood pressure). MIs are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive. FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX A suggestion was made that the door between Bistro and Kitchen be changed to one that swings both ways and that would allow the door to be closed during dining hours but still allow Staff to come and go when carrying items. That sounds like a great idea to me and I will pass it along! Page 14

15 CLOSING NOTES. Transportation Update: To those who would like MBCC to take you to your medical appointments it is important for you to make them on Wednesdays in order for us to keep our Shopping Days open for Shopping! Many of us get a little sheepish when dealing with our Physician s scheduler --- and we just assume that the time they say is the only option we have. That is almost never true and all we need to do is to ask: What do you have open on Wednesday instead? and lo an behold times suddenly appear! Your cooperation is very much appreciated! Special thanks to Nancy Thomason for that quote from Jonathan Daniels that is from his Valedictorian speech at Virginia Military Institute in Mr. Daniels was a divinity student when he stepped in front of a sheriff who was denying two black girls from entering a convenience store. He was shot and killed. The Trip Begins: We all hope that a difficult beginning is an omen of a wonderful finish! This morning the livery (transportation) company failed to deliver on their commitment to provide the contracted services to bring our Cruising Members from MBCC to the Boston Waterfront to join their Cruise Ship. I ve only heard part of the story but it seems that with emergency help from Dining Services and Activities that two additional vehicles were pressed into service and all made it to the dock just 20 minutes later than planned --- but still well ahead of time. Special thanks to Ryan and all who rose to the occasion to make it happen! I bet there were a couple of stressful moments there this morning! We know they all made it to the dock and we assume that they have set sail in the North Atlantic! Not only is it semi-officially Fall --- it is also time to at least be thinking about the Holidays. At MBCC the Christmas Celebration would not be complete without the wonderful display of John Eaton s worldwide collection of Creches or Nativities. The dates have already been set for this year when John will carefully unpack some 100 works of arts in miniature! Be sure to plan on it! Until next week Howie Page 15
