TODAY S AGENDA About this template 1. WNB#1 & DLP warm-up 2. Kahoot 3. The Kite Runner chapters Add to character chart 5. Question groups

WRITER S NOTEBOOKS Most days we will complete a five minute WNB entry. Here are the expectations: 1. Write continuously about the prompt given for five full minutes. 2. Get started writing RIGHT AWAY. 3. No talking. Phones may only be used for music. 4. We are writing to kickstart your thinking. 5. I will collect notebooks every 3-5 entries.

WRITER S NOTEBOOK ENTRY #1 Think about a time when you felt underappreciated, misunderstood, or even unloved by one or both of your parents. Describe the situation, how you felt, and how it was resolved. OR Describe a time when you felt jealous because it seemed like one of your parents or both favored your brother or sister over you. Describe the situation, how you felt, and how it was resolved.

DAILY LANGUAGE PRACTICE Write out the following sentences in your notebook, correcting any mistakes in grammar, punctuation, or spelling. 1. This year I have english, math, and spanish classes. 2. Next summer Mira s family is taking a trip to portland oregon. 3. I realized my purse was to heavy because I had too many coins.

Here s what your corrections should look like. 1. This year, I have English, math, and Spanish classes. Languages are ALWAYS capitalized. Class names aren t unless they are languages or followed by a number (like Math 101.) 2. Next summer, Mira s family is taking a trip to Portland, Oregon. Towns, cities, and states are always capitalized. Any NOUN with a specific name is capitalized. 3. I realized my purse was to heavy because I had too many coins. To = to and from Too = too many, or a substitute for also.

ogo to Kahoot.it owait for the code. oappropriate names, please, or NO MORE KAHOOTS.

Answer the following questions If you missed class today, you ll need to come in and make up this quiz within ONE week s time. If more than a week passes before you do so, it s a zero.

ADD THIS QUOTE FOR BABA (ON YOUR CHARACTER CHART). If I hadn t seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I d never believe he s my son. -Remember, Amir HEARS his dad say this.

ADD THIS QUOTE FOR AMIR (ON YOUR CHARACTER CHART). I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved wife, his beautiful princess, hadn t I? The least I could have done was to have had the decency to turn out a little more like him.

ADD THIS QUOTE FOR AMIR (ON YOUR CHARACTER CHART). That was how I escaped my father s aloofness, in my dead mother s books. I read everything.

Find people with your number.. In your group, you will have 2-4 questions to answer. Do this in complete sentences with specific details on ONE sheet of paper. Put everyone s name on the sheet. You have 5-10 minutes. You will present your answer to the class to help further everyone s understanding of these chapters.

1. What does the story about the death of Ali s parents show us about Afghan society? 2. How does Baba s relationship with Ali mirror Amir s with Hassan? What do you think Hosseini wants the reader to think about this?

3. Amir says I never thought of me and Hassan as friends (p.25). Does this mean that they were never friends, or does it suggest something else about their relationship? 4. Read the following extract from pages 28-9 Sitting crosslegged, sunlight and shadows of pomegranate leaves dancing on his face I would tell myself that was amends enough for a harmless prank. What do we find out about the character of each boy from these events?

5. How has Afghanistan changed forever? Explain your answer and read a quote that demonstrates this. 6. Who does Baba call out to when he comes into the house? Do you think this is significant? Why or why not? 7. Why is Amir glad about the coup? 8. What does Hassan s question to Amir (p.37) show us?

9. Choose three quotations that describe Assef, write them down, and then read them to the class. What impression do they leave you with? 10. Is there such a thing as a true Afghan? (p.40) What is ironic about Assef s speech?

11. What impact does Amir s thought that he s not my friend!... He s my servant! (p.41) have on the reader? (What does it tell us about Amir?) 12. How do you think Ali feels about Hassan s birthday present from Baba? Explain your answer. 13. What leaves the reader with a sense of foreboding at the end of chapter 5?

14. Why is the opening sentence only a word long? (What effect does it create?) 15. Explain three things that Amir enjoys about winter. 16. Why is kite fighting especially important to Amir, and what is he determined to do for this kite festival? 17. Name several instances in this section in which Amir envies Hassan. In each case, is Amir s jealousy justified or not?

18. Describe the unusual talent that Hassan has. 19. What added understanding of the title do we gain from this chapter? 20.Amir is cruel to Hassan in this chapter but does anything in his story make us less critical of him? 21. Finish the quotation from p.51: He was so goddam pure,

WAIT TO READ CHAPTER 7. We will read it together next class. If you are behind, catch up through chapter 6.
