1 June/July 2013 Fort Dodge, IA Backstage Opal Returns This Summer! Have you ever tried to do a good deed and then all of a sudden it backfires and you do not know what to do? Well Opal is at it again! Hawkeye Community Theatre will be presenting Opal s Husband by John Patrick, directed by Terry Coleman July 9-13 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, July 14 at 2:00 PM. Bent as usual on a good deed, Opal tries to round up a husband for her friend Rosie and answers a lonely hearts ad placed by Mister Handsome who, when he shows up, proves to be a ninety-five-year-old escapee from a nursing home. As expected, complications ensue, and when Rosie rejects her wouldbe suitor, Opal reluctantly agrees to marry him in order to keep the old man from the clutches of his scheming daughter. It seems that he really is quite rich, and his desire is to spend his last days (and his fortune) with a nubile maiden on a South Pacific island while his daughter wants him to expire quickly, and quietly, in the old folk s home. Thereafter the plots and counter-plots multiply hilariously as the daughter and her husband try to discredit the marriage (and convince Opal that she is cuckoo), while the old man devises his own plan to catch them in their dirty work. Happily he succeeds, and off he goes to his fond reward, leaving Opal with both an annulment and another delightful lesson in life to pass on to her myriad admirers. Terry Coleman is thrilled to once again direct a show with Hawkeye Community Theatre. Opal s Husband is a sequel, actually one of five or six Opal plays. Coleman said, I directed Opal s Million Dollar Duck a few years ago and decided audiences might enjoy another installment. Terry was so excited about directing this year s July show and it being Opal s Husband that he could not wait for the auditions. I was thrilled when Martha (McColley) agreed to reprise the role of Opal, and she is very talented and fun to work with! This year s return of Opal will be a delight for all audience members. Terry Coleman explained, Audiences will have a night of pure comedy, The Cast crazy happenings and find themselves laughing from beginning to end. So, grab a friend, your spouse or a neighbor and make plans to come see this laugh out loud show! If you missed the last Opal you will not want to miss this one! 2 Have you ever made a New Year s resolution that you couldn t keep? Have you had a butler that had to many secrets? If you answered yes, or no, you will want to see the Hawkeye Community Theatre show, A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody. The show written by Ron Bernas and directed by first time Hawkeye director Jim VonDolteren will take it s time under the hot lights this August! To bring alive a show with so much wit and comedy the director brought together a cast of veterans and new-faced actors. Jim VonDolteren is excited to be working with such a great cast. I can already see the chemistry between the main and supporting characters, said VonDolteren, Pacing, delivering of lines and facial expressions are critical to the plays success. Jim is happy to have picked this great show for his directorial debut at Hawkeye, he read through numerous previews of different plays on the internet and came across A Little Murder at the tail end. He said he was hooked from the first moment he read the preview. The play s main focus is on a rich couple, Matthew (played by Jeff Bluml) and Julia (played by Alyssa Sparks) Perry. The two are exchanging their annual New Year s resolutions. Matthew is eagerly wanting to enjoy life like one of his country club buds and vows to bump off his wife. The plans are set and Matthew is ready, but of course something has to foul it up! Matthew and Julia s daughter stops in and announces her engagement, and Julia then decides to change her resolution, swearing to be alive in order to see the marriage of their daughter. The year goes forward and some unexpected murders take place at their estate; it seems Matthew can kill everyone except for his wife. As the chaotic events unfold we are introduced to the family butler, Buttram, who, like everyone else, has some secrets of his own. And then of course we are introduced to Detective Plotnik, a Sam Spade wannabe, who arrives to solve the mystery of the deaths, however no one can understand a thing he is saying. The race is on between Matthew and Julia to see who will and who won t survive their resolutions. With clever writing and humor this play is a do not miss! The director and cast are trying to create an atmosphere of a movie from the 40 s and 50 s. So, among other things, the audience can expect the décor and theater ambiance to whisk them away to that time period. Said director Page 2 Does Murder Really Hurt Anybody? August 2013 Jim VonDolteren. They are working hard to get costuming that is appropriate to that time period as well as getting pieces for the set to match. Oh, and maybe they might just have a few twists in store to make your experience at Hawkeye unique and memorable! A Little Murder Never Hurt Anybody will take the stage August 13-17th at 7:00 PM and Sunday, August 18th at 2:00 PM. Tickets are on sale at the door for $10 or on our website at The Cast Matthew Perry - Jeff Bluml Julia Perry - Alyssa Sparks Bunny Perry - Kait Daisy Donald Baxter - Joe Sutter Buttram - Darren Jackson Detective Plotnik - Dave Pettinger What s HCT... 4 A Family Tradition with Hawkeye What started out as a pickup truck and a few Hawkeye Theatre walkers, became a decorated trailer float with some enthusiastic theatregoers. Tissue, staples, plastic table cover, some 1x4s, plywood, golf cart trailer, and some more staples were the perfect ingredients for this prize worthy float. The Hawkeye Community board and patrons came together to represent the theatre in the 39th Annual Frontier Days Parade, Frontier Days - A Family Tradition. It included a pickup truck and golf cart trailer provided by Richard Wilson that was fully decorated. A plywood structure filled the trailer and was covered with a plastic table cover with trees printed along. Several group photos of shows were put along the top leaves of the trees to represent our Hawkeye family trees and then were surrounded with our brigade of stapled green tissue leaves. The back of the float was a full tree design created with tissue that included the updated Hawkeye logo. This was all put together by our committee over two evenings. Those in attendance of the parade may have seen the gathering of Hawkeye walkers sporting the theatre t-shirts, listening to some family songs played over the speakers, and carrying the new banner with the updated logo to help spread the word about the Summer season, as well as where to find information about Hawkeye Community Theatre as an organization. Everything came together to earn the group 2nd place in the best theme float category. A thank you to all those who helped piece the float together, walked in the parade, or smiled and waved at us as we went down the route. Next time you re in the theatre, you will have to check out our trophy! 5 Hawkeye Academic Scholarship Awarded Hawkeye Community Theatre knows that the cost of Higher Education is rising. From tuition and fees to books and supplies the next school year many students will step onto their perspective campuses and step into what could be years of debt. The Board of Hawkeye is determined to help college bound students relieve some of the stress of that burden as we now believe that a Higher Education is worth so much in their lives at this time. This year we are excited to be able to award two academic scholarships. We are proud to announce that Nicholas Dosland, graduate from Prairie Valley High School; and Janessa Laupp, graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High School were this year s recipients. Nicholas Dosland Nick is a graduate from Prairie Valley High School in Gowrie, and the son of Kim Dosland. He has been active, not just in his high schools theatre department, but also at Hawkeye Theatre as well. His most recent role at Hawkeye was in the annual Dinner Theatre, FOOLS, where he played the Magistrate. Nick has also been involved with his high school s speech program receiving many division I ratings in Radio Broadcasting and Storytelling. He plans to attend Iowa Central Community College in the fall and major in Web Technology, with future plans to transfer to Iowa State University and major in Software Engineering. While at Iowa Central Nick also plans to participate in music and theatre, while also staying active at Hawkeye. Janessa Laupp Janessa is a graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High School and the daughter of Jim and Mary Jo Laupp. She has been extremely active in music and theatre throughout her life, especially at Senior High. During the summer Janessa also helps and participates in the Take 2 Summer Theatre held at First Baptist Church. She has also made stage appearances in Into the Woods with Comedia Musica Players. Janessa plans to attend Luther College in the Fall and major in History with a minor in Secondary Education. She also plans to participate in music or theatre throughout her college career. Each recipient received a scholarship for $ for this academic year. They also are able to apply for a renewal scholarship next year. Congratulations to both Nicholas and Janessa! What s New Continued From Page 2 This is a way that the theatre is able to take cards using PayPal, MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover; a great asset to have for those of us that don t always carry cash. The tickets you buy are good for any night of the show and will be held at the theatre. At the ticket counter give hawkeyetheatre.com your name and tell us that you bought your tickets online and we will be able to get you checked off. One may also become members of the theatre or renew your existing membership by choosing one of six levels of memberships and filling out the form. Your contributions as members help to maintain the physical property of the theatre and support the ongoing performances. It also is a great way to encourage your commitment of time to attend shows, bring your friends along, keep theatre in your life, and simplify the ticket process. New on the site this year was the addition of the online scholarship application for our recent area graduates. Each year Hawkeye Community Theatre awards at least one scholarship to a deserving graduate or local area high schools. They were able to electronically print it off or fill it in to submit it to the board. In recent years, the theatre has grown in our geographic outreach. The website has been an excellent way to get information out to those in the surrounding area along with the locals right here. Next time you are online or planning your visit for the upcoming shows, visit www. hawkeyetheatre.com, our website is a valuable source for information. June/July 2013 Page 5
