1 1 Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Port Hope Branch Newsletter September 2015 President's Report It has been a wonderful summer with a number of great events! Our summer started on June 11th with an Evening with the ACO & Friends event, an extremely interesting presentation by John Shaw-Rimmington of Stone Alone. One month later on July 11th the bi-annual Garden Tour took place and it was just delightful with the chance to visit some amazing Port Hope gardens on a beautiful summer day! Thanks to the Committee members, volunteers and gardeners for pulling it together and to the gardeners again for sharing with the community. Then a month later, on August 13th, it was so nice to see and chat with well over 100 of our members at the ACO Picnic at the hilltop home and property of Helene and Don Mcquigge. Thank you, Helene and Don, for sharing your gardens and majestic views with us, and to the Executive and volunteers who worked so hard to make it happen. I must also thank whoever controls the weather for holding off the torrential rainstorms until the next day! The scaffolding and hoarding around the front of each of 41 John Street and is down and you can now see the restorative work that has taken place at each. If you have not seen it, head downtown to do so soon. The ACO and thus YOU was key to making this happen and you should be very, very proud! All good news stories and to top it all off I advise that we received a further distribution of $102,000 (for a total receipt of $132,000) from the Estate of our friend and past member the late Barbara Jones. Thank you, Barb. The House Tour our 50th is being held the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. The Committee has put together a HUGE event so many great houses they have to hold it over two days. Tickets are limited and are on sale now. I understand they are selling well ahead of last year so get yours soon! The House Tour Committee has also organized a reception upstairs at the Capitol for 4:15 on the Saturday. There will be nibbles and a cash bar and the chance to chat with others. Following the reception there will be a presentation by Shannon Kyles, a professor at Mohawk College, who many of you will know from her presentations on CBC Radio. Shannon will talk about The Changing Face of Restoration. Our branch is hugely successful and that is because of each and all of you. Thank you for that, and I look forward to seeing you at the House Tour. Charting a path from its origins as versatile workboat to the long-distance freighter or the sleek racing craft called the Canadian canoe of an international sport, Ward draws from the museum s world-class collection of over six hundred canoes and kayaks and its recently-opened exhibit on the flatwater racing sport called Canoe Sprint to explore the significance and transformations of this remarkable boat. Jeremy Ward comes highly recommended as a speaker on this subject. $20 members; $25 non-members; includes wine and refreshments. Make out cheque to ACO Port Hope Canoe, include and tel. no., and mail/ deliver to 8 King Street, Port Hope. The ACO was incorporated in 1933 for the preservation of the best examples of architecture in the province and for the preservation of its places of natural beauty. 3 3 The ACO s Done It Again! Downtown Port Hope is looking a little more rejuvenated these days, thanks to two more restoration projects recently completed with financial assistance from the ACO. And a third is under way, promising excellent results when finished over the next few weeks. First, we re happy to report that new windows have been installed on the old North American Hotel, the landmark building on Walton Street at the head of Queen. Built to modern efficiency standards, they are virtually indistinguishable from the original windows, which were too far gone to repair. Meanwhile, over on John Street, the old Granary converted from a feed mill to shops and offices in the 1980s was also awarded ACO funding this summer. There, the results are less visible, but equally important to the long-term viability of the building: repointing faulty masonry; replacement of damaged bricks; a new roof; replacement of rotted wooden components, including window sills. Up on Pine Street N., facing St. John s church, work has begun on a thorough restoration of Pinehurst, one of Before After As one of Port Hope s oldest and most interesting landmarks, this architectural gem has long been of concern to the ACO, but under new owners, the building seems to have turned a corner. Port Hope s most photographed houses. Virtually everything about this 1846 treasure is being restored, repaired or upgraded, but the ACO s donation is like the North American Hotel devoted to windows. In this instance, the original windows were sound enough to warrant restoration. Donations to projects like these would not be possible without the continued success of ACO fund-raising efforts such as the house tour, the auction and of course, your donations. Stay tuned: more projects will be announced in the months ahead. Send any inquiries or comments to Tom Cruickshank at tecruickshank@gmail.com.

6 6 ACO Matters September 2015 Needed: New Next Gen Members! Do you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or know children of friends who are interested in history, heritage or architecture? If so, perhaps they would be interested in joining ACO Port Hope. Port Hope boasts a very successful branch of the ACO. Nevertheless, we would like to have a greater breadth of age groups to provide for the longevity of the branch, thereby ensuring the continuity of our mission to preserve buildings and structures of architectural merit and places of natural beauty or interest. Thus we would love to attract more new Next Gen members to carry our torch into the future. As you know, our branch does offer the AK Sculthorpe Scholarship to encourage interested young people to acquire the skills needed to help preserve our heritage. It is a proactive way of investing in our future to preserve the past. You will have seen an article written by our most recent scholarship recipient, Akira Inman, in the last issue of the newsletter. Please give this matter some thought, and encourage some Next Gen people to join ACO Port Hope. Remember the gift of membership would make an excellent addition to any birthday or Christmas present! Trish Doney Exciting Opportunities ACO Port Hope branch is looking for volunteers to join its Executive. In the coming year we will require a new Treasurer and would welcome applications by to ACOPORTHOPE@gmail.com or by leaving a message at , and we will get back to you. Qualifications required include proficiency in QuickBooks software. Interested parties should submit their application by October 15th. Do you have some other skill sets you think the ACO Executive would benefit from? Start thinking about nominations, your own or for someone else, for next year s candidates for our Board. Please advise us by October 30th and a member of our Nomination Committee will get back to you. Heritage Port Hope Membership We have been advised that Heritage Port Hope Advisory Committee is looking for new members. Recognising the interests of our organization, they have enquired as to whether any of our members from either Ward would be interested in joining. For further information about this important committee please visit the Municipality s web site at: and to submit your application contact: Heritage Port Hope Advisory Committee 56 Queen Street, Port Hope, ON L1A 3V Initials, Initials Have you sometimes thought that our area seems to have an extraordinary number of organizations with initials that seem confusingly alike and you ve no idea what they stand for? Well, here s a few with their long names: HTF Heritage Trust Fund HIAC Heritage Incentives Advisory Committee PHRA Port Hope Ratepayers Assoc. HBIA Heritage Business Improvement Area PHAI Port Hope Area Initiative HPHAC Heritage Port Hope Advisory Committee Still mystified? Google will no doubt tell you what they do.

7 7 Talk by Catherine Nasmith Friday 18 September at 6:30pm Cobourg Public Library ACO Cobourg is pleased to welcome Catherine Nasmith, ACO Provincial President, to the Rotary Room of the Cobourg Public Library. Her topic is entitled, Main Street as Old Growth Forest. Her presentation uses analogies from the environmental, conservation and ecology movements to describe the value of our rapidly disappearing Main Streets with regard to their types, states, complexity, diversity, and other attributes. Catherine is a practicing architect, Jane Jacobs Prize winner (2010) and publisher of Built Heritage News. She has been observing Main Streets since the 1980s. This presentation is free to ACO members and costs $5 for guests and non-members. These can be purchased at the door. There will be refreshments at 6:30. Members at the ACO Summer Barbecue New Idea! Interested in Travelling Overseas with the ACO? It has been suggested that members of our branch of the ACO might be interested in organizing overseas tours to places of historic and architectural interest, and we re mulling over the idea. One destination suggestion that was mooted was Castles in Ireland, but there are countless directions in which we might go, in fact you might be able to suggest one yourself. If interested in the idea or in getting involved, contact us at ACOPORTHOPE@gmail.com.
