4 Director s Review The first official day of summer has come and gone, but the days of summer and hours of sunshine have just begun. In celebration of the dog days of summer, diēs caniculārēs as the Romans called it, we ve prepared an exciting schedule of activities in the great outdoors and the cool comfort of home. The great outdoors... Our picnics include High Park, Thompson Memorial Park, Rosetta McClain Gardens and Humber Bay. In the courtyard we ll host our Annual Garden Party. Jenny, our summer student will lead our neighbourhood walks now twice a week Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Meet us in the North Lounge on the ground floor. In cool comfort Movies off the Wall includes some gems from the 80 s Terms of Endearment, Places in the Heart and A Room with a View. Our new documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey explores how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space & time. Play our interactive video game, Away Wii Go on Thursdays on the Lower Level. Our Ice Cream Social and Afternoon Tea & Storytelling will continue throughout the summer. All That Jazz returns with an afternoon of jazz music and light refreshments. You can also exercise your brain with an introductory session on Mindfulness Meditation. Have a safe and happy summer! You can play: Tennis Bowling Golf Baseball It encourages physical activity in a fun, interactive way. At the end of August we ll be hosting our own bowling and golf tournament! This series is a follow up to the 1980 series hosted by Carl Sagan where viewers were led on an engaging guided tour of the various elements and cosmological theories of the Universe. Mindfulness Meditation New Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 Time: 3:00 p.m. Place: Main Floor Dining Room Mindfulness is like exercise for your brain. Mindfulness meditation focuses on a moment by moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment. We pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging there s no right or wrong way to think or feel in a given moment. Our thoughts tune into what we re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. Join Jenny, our Summer Student for this very simple meditation session.
