2 REBEL WOMEN Please turn off cell phones. No photography or recording devices are allowed. Back Row (L to R): Al Buntin, Kathleen Driscoll, Peggy Busch, Trish Ewen, Deborah Vieyra, Scott Alpen Front Row (L to R): Marilyn McVey, Chris McBeath, Mandana Namazi, Karin Atkinson, Ariyanne Pascuzzi, Ayla Seymour, Aria De Maris. Rebel Women Synopsis: This is the 100th anniversary of the Vote for Women. How did the #MeToo movement really start? In early 20th century Britain the front line of the militant suffragettes contained a motley bunch of women. They were called to battle by a diminutive, delicate lady, as battlescarred and hardened as any soldier. Join her and her fellow rebels as they are swept up in the maelstrom that will alter their lives forever, cause governments to fall and shape democracy for us all. Rebel Women is a theatre verbatim play: the women s actual words and songs, insightful, sometimes hilarious and always searingly truthful, are used to create the play.

4 Director s Notes I have often said that I am very happy to have been born in the time that I was, and can take my freedom and liberty for granted. Had I been born in the late 1800s, I hope I would have enthusiastically joined the women's suffrage movement and been as brave as the women who did. They endured suffering the likes of which we, who live in the modern, Western world, can hardly even imagine. They changed the world, and were part of the creation of modern life as we know it, despite deprivation, hardship and, often, torture. It has been a pleasure to direct this play, and I hope we have succeeded in allowing the voices of these remarkable women and men to come through, loudly and clearly, across the passage of 100 years. My endless thanks and appreciation to the actors and the technical crew for this production. My thanks also to you, the audience, who I hope will come away with an appreciation for what this movement and these women have done for us today. Acknowledgements Sarah Arnold Remember the dignity of your womanhood. Do not appeal, do not beg, do not grovel. Take courage, join hands, stand beside us, fight with us. Christabel Pankhurst I would rather be a rebel than a slave. Emmeline Pankhurst Joan Bryans Urban Repurpose Nancy Richer North Shore News Deep Cove Crier Our partners, First Impressions Theatre North Vancouver Community Players North Shore News Mount Lions Housing Society Mount Seymour Ladies Lions Maureen and the Deep Cove Cultural Centre concession volunteers Bios Supergirl and a VFS Student Film Easy Money. This is Ayla s first theatre appearance and she is thrilled to be a part of the Deep Cove Society Theatre. When Ayla is not on the stage or on the screen, you can find her developing her comedic, creative & acting skills, being a mom and advocating for social issues such as the environment, healthy food, and affordable housing. Frances Kerstiens ~ Gertrude Harding ~ I am proud to be stage managing this wonderful and important production. I am also very pleased to be playing Canadian suffragette, Gertrude Harding. The suffrage movements in Britain, Canada, and the U.S. are considered some of the greatest examples of civil protest and disobedience in history... I dedicate my participation in this wonderful show to women all over the world who bravely continue to fight hard to achieve and maintain their rights and in a sea of brave women, to my mother, the smartest, most courageous woman I have ever known. Al Buntin ~ Grey (MP), Campbell-Bannerman (PM) ~ Al just moved back to BC from Harris, Saskatchewan where he performed with Sky High Productions in The Pull of the Land. Al s experiences have taken him from CBC with the Beachcombers and The Irish Rover s Emigrate Emigrate to Vagabond Playhouse s productions of No Sex Please We re British, Move Over Mrs. Markham and Who Killed Santa Claus? Al recently joined Deep Cove Shaw Theatre assisting with set building for Cyrano and is happy to be part of this production. Wilson Fowlie ~ Asquith (PM), Doctor, Lloyd-George (PM) ~ Even though Wilson hasn t been in a play for at least forty years, he is no stranger to the stage or to performing, as he has just retired, after seventeen years, as director of The Maple Leaf Singers community chorus, and also regularly narrates stories for fiction podcasts. He thanks Heather, Quinn and Clover for their love and support. Scott Alpen ~ Soldier, Gladstone (MP) ~ I am very pleased to be able to take part in this powerful play. I am certain you, the audience, will enjoy the production and take away a broader knowledge of the fight for women s rights that is so relevant in today s environment. Thanks to my fellow cast members and the whole production crew for their support and energy. Page 4 Page 9
5 Bios Music Man. It has been a pleasure working with Sarah and this wonderfully talented cast. Ariyana Pascuzzi ~ Helena Gutteridge ~ Ariyanna is thrilled to be part of the Rebel Women cast and honoured to play Vancouver s first Alderwoman. When Ariyanna is not involved with DCS, she can be found volunteering in the community, teaching Dance and Movement Therapy or singing with the Fabulous First Friday band. Thank-you Suffragettes for your perseverance and courage. Kathleen Driscoll ~ Elizabeth Dean ~ By day, Kathleen works as a special needs Preschool teacher in an inclusive centre located at UBC. By night, Kathleen transforms into an enthusiastic theatre nut. Always busy acting in plays and musicals around the lower mainland, Kathleen also works back stage with costumes, make-up, and as a technical operator. An award winning, true community theatre member, Kathleen hopes you enjoy the show. Marilyn McVey ~ Mary Leigh ~ Marilyn made her start in community theatre with Between Shifts Theatre s production of Calendar Girls in Highlights since then include A Murder is Announced with Theatre West Van. Most recently, Marilyn had a blast being neurotic as Florence Unger, in The Odd Couple, Female Version. Marilyn is pleased and honoured to be joining Deep Cove Stage Society for this thought-provoking production. Trish Ewen ~ Jessie Paynes ~ Trish started volunteering with Deep Cove Stage Society in the Fall of 2016 as backstage crew. Since then she has worked on four other productions helping back stage and assisting with props and set decoration. Trish made her acting debut in April 2018 playing Edith the maid in Blithe Spirit, filling in a week before opening night, when an injury prevented the previous actor from performing the role. Trish is thrilled to be on stage with so many powerful women and men to help bring the words and deeds of the past into the future, to remind us all how important our vote is, and how hard it was fought for! Ayla Seymour ~ Maggie Scott ~ Ayla first fell in love with the craft of acting and theatre at the age of ten when competing for the lead role of her class play and developed a London accent to win the role. Yet Ayla has just begun pursuing acting as her passion as career with upcoming appearance in Scenes ACT 1 ( ) Scene 1: Carnegie Hall, New York (October 25, 1909) Scene 2: Free Trade Hall, Manchester, Liberal Party rally Scene 3: Women s Social and Political Union office (WSPU) Scene 4: Street corner, Islington, London Scene 5: WSPU Scene 6: Street, London Scene 7: Caxton Hall, London Scene 8, 9: Houses of Parliament Scene 10: WSPU Parliament, Hyde Park (1910) Scene 11: WSPU Scene 12: Holloway prison (1910) There will be a 15-minute Intermission ACT 2 ( ) Scene 13: WSPU, Parliament Scene 14: Various locations Scene 15: WSPU Scene 16: Epson race course (1913) Scene 17: Funeral Scene 18: WSPU Scene 19: The National Gallery (1914) Scene 20: WSPU Scene 21: Royal Albert Hall (1918) Coming soon to the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre Ring of Fire, the music of Johnny Cash. is a powerful tribute to the Man in Black, an endlessly entertaining journey that will leave you cheering for more! 6 Bios Sarah Arnold ~ Director ~ Sarah is often found to be lurking around theatres in the lower mainland, as an actor, director or audience member. On stage most recently as Mrs. Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer (Metro). Other acting highlights are Mrs. Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (Metro), Alice in A Man for All Seasons (United Players) and Annie in The Norman Conquests (Theatre West Van). As a director, Sarah has successfully helmed several productions including Comic Potential (Metro), 39 Steps and Arsenic and Old Lace (both Theatre West Van). Barb Brolly ~ Music Director ~ Actor, singer, music director and voice coach, Barb has been active on the Vancouver musical and community theatre scene (TUTS, Gateway, Metro, Applause Musicals, North Van Players, Theatre West Van, Deep Cove Stage) for nearly 30 years. No stranger to Deep Cove Stage, Barb music directed the Ovation award-nominated, rockin 60s musical soap opera, SUDS in 2014, the Christmas panto, The Dragon of Wantley in 2015, and in 2017, the Kander & Ebb musical revue, The World Goes Round. Thanks, DCSS, for putting your faith in me, once again...it s been a joy! Mandana Namazi ~ Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst ~ Portraying this incredible woman has been an honour and a life-changing opportunity for Mandana. Mandana has performed in the Lower Mainland and over the border over the last 20 years. She relishes the opportunity to portray strong female characters and believes we need to strive for more such opportunities, both on stage and in real life. Some favourites: Catherine in These Shining Lives; Ruth in Facing East The Musical; and Eliza in My Fair Lady. Thank-you to this incredible cast of men and women and to Sarah and the production team for all your hard work and dedication to delivering this important show to the audience. Kisses to her husband and two beautiful little boys. Aria De Maris ~ Christabel Pankhurst ~ After graduating from the Stella Adler Studio of acting in New York, and training in London, Vancouver and LA, Aria went on to work on DC Legends of Tomorrow, an upcoming British WWI drama The Bagley Boys, CBC s new comedy This Blows and a supporting-lead role on Hallmark s Christmas at Holly Lodge to name a few. She also works as a dialect coach, most recently on the Netflix series Altered Carbon. She has acted on various stages in London, Vancouver and New York and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. When the cameras are off and the stages are dimmed, she works as a voice actor, lending her voice and Bios Spanish skills to the Cambridge University, as well as various audio dramas, and a Disney TV movie. She is also a dedicated and loving parront to her parrot, Merlin, and enjoys discussing the finer points of life with him while he dodges responsibility and eats her food. She is very exited to be a part of Rebel Women, working with such an amazing and fun cast! Deborah Vieyra ~ Annie Kenny ~ Deborah is a performer, writer and teacher from South Africa. After completing her BA in Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town, she performed in various theatres in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Some highlights include playing Una in David Harrower s Blackbird, travelling to Dublin to perform in the Absolut Gay and Lesbian Theatre Festival and recently playing Kate in Joan Bryan s production of She Stoops to Conquer. She is a Fulbright scholar, and holds a MA in Applied Theatre Arts from the University of Southern California. Chris McBeath ~ Lady Constance Lytton ~ When her parents barred Lady Lytton from marrying the man she loved because of his lower social standing, she chose to remain single for the rest of her life. That action reveals her independent nature and in following her story through the suffragette movement, I am filled with admiration. It is a privilege to portray a real person, and Lady Constance Lytton has me questioning if I would have the courage, fortitude and resilience of convictions that she and the sisterhood displayed. Would you? Karin Atkinson ~ Mary Richardson ~ Karin Atkinson is thrilled to let her inner rebellious woman out as if she didn t do that enough already! When she isn t getting pelted with fruit or slashing paintings in order to topple the crushing foot of the patriarchy, she can usually be found petting cats or curling under a blanket with a comic book and a nice cup of coffee. You may have seen her in Deep Cove s recent production of Dracula as Renfield, or at the Vancouver Fringe in her musical debut, 50 Fun Things. Enjoy the show. Peggy Bush ~ Wallace Dunlop ~ Although this is Peggy s first show with Deep Cove Stage, she has been involved in musical theatre for more years than she would like to admit and has worked with numerous theatre companies in the lower mainland. Memorable roles include Golde Fiddler on the Roof, Vera Charles Mame, Domina A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Old Lady Sunday in the Park with George, Anna McLeod Under the Same Sky, Clairee Steel Magnolias and Eulalie McKechnie Shin Page 6 Page 7
