3 hello When a film is described as a period drama, the first things that spring to mind are often corsets or swords, but cinematic storytelling based in history can actually reveal as much about our own times as it does about the past. There are some great examples of this kind of filmmaking in this guide, with contemporary culture seeping into every frame despite the costumes. From personal history in 20th Century Women, to contemporary political resonance in Hidden Figures and The Founder, what filmmakers choose to remember about our shared history is definitely shaped by our present. You will of course find your own connections in these films and we are always keen to hear your views, so don t be shy, let us know what you think. With Martin Scorsese s Silence not long off our screens, we now have the wonderful opportunity to revisit some of his earlier work. Both Goodfellas and Taxi Driver have been restored and rereleased on new 4k digital prints. The timing couldn t be better for us as Cinema 1 is having a full projector upgrade, and with our recently replaced sound system, you ll be able to see (and hear) them in all their Scorsese glory. It s that time of the year where we roll out our annual Oscar competition and with it the chance to win free cinema tickets for an entire year. We hope you ve been doing your research and catching as many of the nominated films as possible. One of the biggest contenders is Barry Jenkins Moonlight, which has had a charmed journey over the past few months, from indie-sensation to multiple award winner. Each and every prize it has picked up is well deserved it is a haunting and beautiful piece of work from beginning to end. Don t miss it. 4 New Films Lion Fri 27 Jan Thu 9 February On paper, it seems too far-fetched to be true young boy, lost on the streets of Kolkata, adopted by an Australian family with only vague memories of where he came from, eventually finds his way home using internet maps but Lion is based on the astonishing real story of Saroo Brierley. In the hands of Australian filmmaker Garth Davis (Top of the Lake), this heart-warming tale about identity and family is a shoo-in come awards season and with good reason. T2 Trainspotting Fri 27 Jan Thu 9 February Twenty years ago Danny Boyle helmed one of the most iconic Scottish films of all time. Based on Irvine Welsh s groundbreaking debut novel, it followed a group of heroin addicts and their associates as they self-destructed in and around Edinburgh. Starring a young Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner, the film was an international sensation that was met with critical acclaim and equal doses of vitriol. A comment on the society in which we lived and a true sensation of 90s cinema the film was, of course, Trainspotting. Two decades later we are treated to its sequel and arguably the most anticipated Scottish production ever, T2 Trainspotting. Based on Welsh's follow up novel Porno, we find Mark Renton (McGregor) returning to Edinburgh and reuniting with loyal loser Spud (Bremner), entrepreneurial sycophant Sick Boy (Miller) and the charismatically psychotic Begbie (Carlyle), together a group of lost souls all fallen foul of the world. Opportunity comes knocking once more, offering the usual debauched rewards, but this time in the form of a different vice. In the northern province of Khandwa in 1986, young brothers Gaddu and Saroo (Sunny Pawar) are inseparable, and when Gaddu goes to find work, 5-year-old Saroo tags along. Too tired to keep up, Saroo falls asleep on a station platform and, confused on waking, gets trapped in a train which takes him 1,600 miles from home. Unable to speak the language at his final destination or to remember the name of his village, the little boy is taken to an orphanage and eventually adopted by Tasmanian couple John and Sue Brierley (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman). Saroo (now played by Dev Patel) settles into his new Australian life, but his past continues to haunt him. Needing to find out where he s from, Saroo searches using the only fragments of his old life he has: memories of the landscape he lived in as a child. Comparisons will be made between Lion and Slumdog Millionaire (not least because they both star the engaging Patel) but this film has a much darker beginning even if the end is a classic feel-good coda. Lion doesn t shy away from some of the more challenging aspects of international adoption, but it builds to a resolution which will have even the most stoic of you reaching for your tissues. Dir: Garth Davis Australia 2016 / 2h / PG A darkly comic adventure that delves deep in to the foibles of contemporary society, T2 Trainspotting makes just as bold a statement on the way we live our lives as the original did. Edinburgh has never looked more intoxicatingly inviting or as beautifully bleak. Dir: Danny Boyle UK 2016 / 1h57m / 18 Subtitled screening Wed 8 February, 20:30 4

5 Jackie Fri 3 Thu 9 February Chilean director Pablo Larraín is an unlikely name to be attached to a biopic about legendary First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, but he has shown a real gift for recreating historical periods with both No and his new film Neruda (coming to DCA in our next guide). His Jackie is in no way a straightforward history lesson, it is instead a complex and layered mood piece anchored by an astonishing career best performance from Natalie Portman. The film is built around an interview with the elusive Jackie (Portman) after the death of her husband. Questioned by a dogged reporter (Billy Crudup), who is hoping to probe behind the stoic mask that so fascinates the American public, Jackie answers with dignity and a poise always on the edge of cracking; at once fragile and yet fully in control. The film moves back and forth in time, providing glimpses of the past that reveal both the joy and sadness of her life with JFK. The immediate aftermath of the assassination in Dallas, the tense negotiations over the funeral arrangements and also her relationship with Bobby Kennedy (Peter Sarsgaard) are brutal and poignant. Accompanied by a haunting score by Mica Levi (Under The Skin), Jackie is so visually interesting that there is not a single frame that doesn t command your attention. The attention to detail from costumes to set design brings the period to life, but it is the emotional power of the performances which make it sing. 6 Loving Fri 10 Thu 23 February Based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who fought all the way to the Supreme Court to have their rights recognised in a landmark case, Loving is a film about love, dignity and respect that s all the more powerful for being resolutely low-key. Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Midnight Special) has said that he wanted the style of the film s storytelling to reflect the quiet determination of this extraordinary couple, who changed the course of American history just by wanting to live together as a family. Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred (Iona s Ruth Negga) have to marry in Washington, as their union is illegal in their segregated home state of Virginia. Although they try to make a new life for themselves there, Mildred longs to bring her children up closer to her family, so they return to live secretly in Virginia. Arrested and charged because Richard is white and Mildred is black, the couple face an impossible choice: either permanently leave their home or face a prison sentence. But with their cause taken up by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Lovings decide to have their case play out in the highest of courts, allowing a decision about their future to possibly change the law for all Americans. Despite the important legal battle at the heart of the story, Loving does not mine its drama from lawyers arguments or grand monologues. Instead, it captures the terrible injustice the couple faced through tiny personal moments, their unspoken devotion to each other, and their unwavering decency. As a result, the verdict when it comes is even more powerful and moving. 7 Denial Fri 17 Thu 23 February Adapted by David Hare from Deborah Lipstadt s book History on Trial, Denial brings to the screen one of the most intriguing legal cases of recent British history, where American academic Lipstadt was sued for libel by controversial historian David Irving. Denial is a fascinating portrait not only of the individuals involved, but also of the UK legal system, which at the time placed the burden of proof in such cases on the defendant. Hacksaw Ridge Fri 10 Thu 16 February Mel Gibson returns to the director s chair with Hacksaw Ridge, a war story that is as much about the power of personal belief as it is about battle. But don t let that mislead you; Gibson pulls no punches about the brutality of armed conflict or the sacrifices that come with a struggle of conscience. Andrew Garfield (Silence) plays Desmond Doss, a Seventh Day Adventist who signed up for combat as a conscientious objector insisting on his right to serve despite his personal beliefs. Born in small town Virginia, Doss grew up in a household ruled by his angry father (Hugo Weaving), and his life was not an easy one. But with the love of his sweetheart (Teresa Palmer) and patriotism in his heart, young Doss determines to serve his country. Initially accepted by his fellow recruits, his refusal to carry a weapon leads to abuse and a court-martial. Yet Doss asserts his right to serve, and is eventually allowed to return to the Pacific as a medic, where he and his fellow soldiers fight in the Battle of Okinawa and attempt to take the infamous cliff named Hacksaw Ridge. While giving a talk in Atlanta where she teaches history, Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) is interrupted by Irving (Timothy Spall), who is determined to have his controversial revisionist views heard. When she later refers to him as a Holocaust denier in her book, Irving goes on the attack and sues for defamation. Lipstadt and her team have to gather and present conclusive proof of the extermination of European Jews from over 50 years earlier. Advised by her solicitor Anthony Julius (Sherlock s Andrew Scott) and barrister Richard Rampton (Tom Wilkinson) not to take the stand, Lipstadt has to give up the opportunity to personally defend herself to ensure Irving is discredited once and for all. In a film about historical truths, writer David Hare is careful to stick to the facts of the case as much as possible, using verbatim transcripts from the trial for all courtroom dialogue. Lipstadt s determination that the truth be recognised is an important lesson in today s internet age, where it is all too easy for opinion to be accepted as fact. Dir: Mick Jackson UK 2016 / 1h50m / 12A Cine Sundays Sun 19 February, 11:00 Doss became a hero for his incredible acts of bravery throughout his service, saving the lives of countless fellow servicemen, and he was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Gibson is certainly a master at stirring up emotion in battle scenes, but Hacksaw Ridge is true to its subject and a very fine tribute to an unlikely war hero. 8 Toni Erdmann Fri 10 Thu 16 February A huge hit at Cannes, Toni Erdmann has gone on to win awards all across Europe and has made it onto the shortlist for Best Foreign Film at this year s Academy Awards. All these prizes are well deserved; German director Maren Ade s film is one of a kind and utterly unforgettable just like its central character. With a running time of almost three hours, this is a film you have settle in for and let unfold in front of you, as you witness what can only be described as a highly unusual relationship between a successful professional woman and her very embarrassing father. But the pay-offs, when they come, are both hilarious and emotional. From the opening scene it s obvious that senior citizen Winfried (veteran Austrian theatre actor Peter Simonischek) is something of a prankster. When his daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller), a stressed, successful businesswoman, comes home to visit, it s clear that she s had a lifetime of his joking and her patience is wearing thin. So when her father then appears on her doorstep back in Bucharest where she works, he isn t exactly welcome. As Winfried tries to distract Ines from what he considers to be her workaholic lifestyle, the results of his antics are mixed to say the least. Part of the beauty of Toni Erdmann is that you literally have absolutely no idea what is going to happen next. Constantly surprising, it is also very touching, as the growing divide between father and daughter is often at odds with their affection for one another. Cleverly exploring issues such as the place of women in the workforce, as well as ageing parents, this film deserves all the accolades it has received and will hopefully go on to even more: it definitely has our vote. Dir: Maren Ade Germany / Austria 2016 / 2h42m / 15 German with English subtitles Maren Ade s film is one of a kind and utterly unforgettable. 8

9 20th Century Women Fri 24 February Thu 2 March Director Mike Mills returns to our screens for the first time since 2010 s Beginners with another warm and well observed tale about family relationships, this time through the eyes of a 15-year-old and the three women who shape his life. Prevenge Fri 17 Thu 23 February We are big fans of comedian Alice Lowe, having fallen in love with her in Ben Wheatley s Sightseers which she co-wrote with Steve Oram. She brings her dark deadpan humour to her directorial debut Prevenge, a gory tale of a woman seeking revenge for the death of her husband, the father of her unborn child. The twist here is that it isn t grief spurring her on instead it s the voice of the baby she is carrying that issues murderous orders. Seven months pregnant while shooting the film, Lowe plays Ruth, who at first glance seems pretty meek if a little passive aggressive. But as her first encounter with a pet shop owner soon reveals, this is a woman on a mission, dead set on killing everyone she believes responsible for her bereavement. Little by little, as Ruth tracks them down, the voice (not in her head but in her belly) gets more and more determined and the body count adds up. The setting is Santa Barbara circa 1979, in an America where change is a comin, feminism and punk rock are on the rise and President Jimmy Carter is struggling in the White House. Against this backdrop teenage Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) is living with his eccentric single mother Dorothea (Annette Bening). Their house is never empty, as they share the space with a tenant, the aspiring artist Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and ever-present handyman William (Billy Crudup). When Dorothea starts to feel her relationship with Jamie is breaking down, she asks Abbie and family friend Julie (Elle Fanning) for help guiding her son to adulthood. As the characters narrate their own past and future stories, 20th Century Women feels intimate and yet always has its eye on the wider social context of the time. Mills has said that this script, like his previous film, was based on episodes in his own life and it shows. There is an authenticity in both the script and performances which means this film never falls into the trap of wistful nostalgia. It will both charm and surprise you. Dir: Mike Mills USA 2016 / 1h58m / 15 Cine Sundays Sun 26 February, 11:00 Bring a Baby Thu 2 March, 10:30 Definitely not for the faint of heart, Prevenge also has plenty of laugh out loud moments, fantastic comedy set pieces and memorably eccentric characters (once you ve met DJ Dan you ll never forget him). Ruth also encounters moments of kindness and warmth along her warpath, which is just one of the reasons why British comedy horror can work even for the squeamish among you. With a great electro score by Brighton s Toydrum and interwoven with clips from 1934 film Crime Without Passion, this is a rare beast a very funny feminist horror film. 10 Moonlight Fri 24 February Thu 9 March It is a rare thing indeed to experience a film which shines a light on people and places often ignored by mainstream cinema and yet know that it will touch anyone who comes to see it, simply because it is beautifully told and its themes are universal in their humanity. Moonlight, the story about one black man s struggle for identity on the tough inner-city streets of Miami, is that film, and it is a masterpiece. Based on a story by playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney and directed by Barry Jenkins, Moonlight is told in three parts, with different actors taking on the role of lead character Chiron as he goes through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. From the beginning, it is clear that life is hard for this young boy growing up in Miami. Nicknamed Little, he is bullied at school by classmates who assume he is gay and his home life with single-mom Paula (Naomie Harris), a nurse teetering on the verge of drug addiction, is fraught. Against this backdrop though, Chiron does encounter kindness and rare moments of joy in his relationships with local big man Juan (Mahershala Ali) and classmate Kevin. With each significant time shift, we discover just how these experiences have shaped his life. The most devastating reveal comes in the final chapter, as we rejoin Chiron (now called Black) prowling the streets of the neighbourhood in a flash car. Determined that no one will ever hurt him again either physically or emotionally, the sweet Chiron seems to have disappeared, until an encounter with someone from his past puts all of that in question. Jenkins, who grew up on the very streets where the film was shot, has created a film which is audacious in both storytelling and visual style, yet feels utterly authentic. The ensemble cast, including Ashton Sanders, Alex Hibbert and Trevante Rhodes, who play Chiron at different ages, are uniformly excellent and Harris (unrecognisable from her role in the James Bond films) gives a performance so fierce, you won t be able to take your eyes off her. 11 Fences Fri 3 Thu 9 March Actor Denzel Washington is no stranger to the director s chair (Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters) and is a natural choice to bring August Wilson s Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the big screen, casting himself in the role of an ageing patriarch (for which he won a Tony award in 2010). Fences is the result, a deeply moving portrait of a family coming apart as generational dreams collide and long standing resentments are revealed. The Founder Fri 3 Thu 9 March Director John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks) takes what could have been a mundane historical biopic and turns it into a relevant exploration of modern capitalism with The Founder, which tells the story of the travelling salesman who transformed the humble McDonald s restaurant into a business empire. Michael Keaton is Ray Kroc, a middle aged salesman who still dreams of success. When he receives a big order for mixing machines from a small restaurant in California, he travels across the country to learn more about the business. In San Bernadino he meets the eccentric McDonald brothers Mac (John Carroll Lynch) and Nick (Nick Offerman). Impressed by their organisation, which is built around a speedee service system, Kroc negotiates a deal to franchise the operation and begins rolling it out across the country. But the path to hamburger glory is not all smooth, with the McDonald brothers keen to protect their original vision, and Kroc to maximise the profits. Convinced that he can make the brand an integral part of American life, Kroc is ruthless in his pursuit of success. Family man Troy (Washington) works as a garbage collector and lives with his wife Rose (Viola Davis, who also won a Tony in a 1983 revival of the play) and aspiring football star son Cory (Jovan Adepo). After a lifetime together, the couple s marriage is starting to show cracks, particularly when it comes to their son s future. Troy is adamant that the boy will not follow in his footsteps by trying for an athletic career. His steadfast refusal is connected to a dark secret from his past that he s kept from everyone, including Rose. With a screenplay written by Wilson before his death in 2005, Fences is beautifully crafted and, despite the themes of poverty, racial struggle, and betrayal, sparkles with funny dialogue and zingers. Washington, always a charismatic presence, brings a menace to the part of Troy which is electrifying. Davis is also poignant as Rose, who has stood by her man all her life, only to have her faith in him and their life together shattered. And with big business now firmly ensconced in the Oval Office, it also seems like a timely reminder of the compromise and drive it apparently takes to get ahead in a commercial free market. Dir: John Lee Hancock USA 2016 / 1h55m / 12A Tickets

12 Hidden Figures Fri 10 Thu 16 March A feel-good film if there ever was one, Hidden Figures is also a loving tribute to the group of African-American women who were integral to the early days of the space program. Their gender and colour made it difficult for these smart and determined women to be taken seriously, and their success story is an inspiration. The Great Wall Fri 10 Thu 16 March Writer, director and former cinematographer Zhang Yimou has garnered thunderous acclaim in the West, in part due to his martial arts epics Hero and House of Flying Daggers, both of which are visually striking and feature distinctively choreographed fight scenes. He also directed the unbelievably impressive opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making it easy to understand the huge hype surrounding his latest tale, The Great Wall. The largest film ever shot in China, Yimou s first English language production is a fantasy-adventure to rival all others. Set during the Song Dynasty, European mercenaries William Garin (Matt Damon) and Pero Tovar (Pedro Pascal) make their way to China in a bid to obtain black powder to sell to the rich and powerful. Needless to say, things don t go according to plan. Soon they find themselves embroiled in an ancient and mystical war between monsters and men as they aid new allies in the defence of the Great Wall and mankind. The film begins in the early 1960s when Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson, best known for her recent role as Cookie on TV s Empire), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) are employed by NASA as part of the government agency s efforts to win the space race. It is an understatement to say that women, especially black women, aren t treated equally in this environment, but when Katherine s talents as a mathematician are revealed to Space Task Group Leader Al Harrison (Kevin Costner) she is transferred to a special group charged with putting a man in space. Like Dorothy and Mary, Katherine has been overlooked for years in favour of her less capable white male colleagues, but when the three women are finally given the chance they deserve, they shine. There s a lightness of tone to Hidden Figures that downplays some of the serious issues at the core of this story, but it certainly makes for a very enjoyable watch. All three leads are terrific, together showcasing the magnitude of what these women achieved, which was nothing short of remarkable. 13 It s Only the End of the World Fri 10 Thu 16 March At the ripe old age of 27, wunderkind Xavier Dolan is back on our screens with his sixth feature, It s Only the End of the World, which debuted in Cannes last year. Dolan s first project outside his native Canada is adapted from a play by French playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce, himself a prodigy who completed 25 plays before he died in 1995 of AIDS, aged 30. A family drama which plays out as an intimate chamber piece, this is Dolan s most intense work to date. With an ensemble cast that s a who s who of French acting elite, the film opens with successful playwright Louis (Gaspard Ulliel) travelling home to reunite with his family after a 12 year estrangement. His sister Suzanne (Léa Seydoux), a little girl when he left, is over the moon and his eccentric mother (Nathalie Baye) has been busy planning a party for his arrival. But older brother Antoine (the explosive Vincent Cassel) is clearly angry about many things, not least the fuss made over Louis. Cowering in the corner is Antoine s meek and nervous wife Catherine (Marion Cotillard) desperately trying to please everyone. A stranger in his own home, Louis tries to connect with each member of the family, and it isn t long before secrets, resentments, and painful memories bubble to the surface, leaving everyone reeling. Along with a great original score by Gabriel Yared, It s Only the End of the World also features Dolan s trademark skill of building a soundtrack with classic hits you d love to have on your jukebox. And although there is a lot of shouting and personal angst, Dolan peppers the film with some beautifully serene moments, such as Louis rediscovering a storage room of his youthful possessions, which trigger flashbacks that flesh out why he left the family home in the first place. 14 Music Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Tue 7 March, 20:30 Lost in France Tue 21 February, 20:15 Filmmaker Niall McCann follows up his documentary about Luke Haines, Art Will Save the World, with this loving portrait of rock outsiders, following the rise of Glasgow label Chemikal Underground and culminating in a where-are-they-now reunion of the labelmates in Back in the late 1990s, a collection of musicians from Chemikal Underground Records hired a bus and headed off on a road trip to a town in rural France to play a one-off gig. Now they are heading back to relive the experience. Included in the group are The Delgados, who launched the label in 1994, Franz Ferdinand s frontman Alex Kapranos, guitarist/singer RM Hubbert, and Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai. Lost in France, in exploring a small moment in Chemikal Underground s history, defines what has made the label and its acts so adored by fans around the world. Directed by pioneering rock filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker, this documentary and concert film captures David Bowie and his band, The Spiders from Mars, performing at London s Hammersmith Odeon on July 3, It was at this now infamous concert that Bowie made a sudden announcement, shocking fans and media alike by stating it s the last show we ll ever do. Rather than marking his withdrawal from music, his declaration signalled the retirement of the Ziggy Stardust persona, and the end of a hugely influential chapter in Bowie s own story. In addition to the concert movie, the evening will include a new film produced by MOJO magazine, featuring Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander in conversation with The Spiders from Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey. Tickets 14 I 12 students and under 21s Every attendee will receive a special copy of MOJO magazine, that won't be available in shops, that documents the Ziggy era, with an exclusive David Bowie/Spiders from Mars collectors cover. 15 Vintage See two films for 10 with our vintage film special! Goodfellas Fri 17 Sun 19 February In the 1930s great American gangster films like Little Caesar, The Public Enemy and Scarface were decried for glorifying lives of crime. Almost sixty years later, Martin Scorsese s Goodfellas picked up where those films left off, daring to capture the visceral thrill of living outside of the law. Gone are the family values and elegant visuals of The Godfather. Scorsese's central trio of mobsters, Henry (Ray Liotta), Tommy (Oscarwinner Joe Pesci) and Jimmy (Robert De Niro), are deeply amoral and socially irresponsible. Scorsese understands that you would not want to meet these men; but he also knows that their refusal to conform makes them fascinating. The film s masterstroke, however, is to find a visual language that is as every bit as stylish, energetic and violently unrestrained as its protagonists. From its brutal opening scene to the extraordinary final shot, the film is alive with nervous energy, allowing us to live vicariously through its characters in the safety of the movie theatre. So why fight the urge? Come see this classic on the big screen in a stunning new 4K restoration. Dir: Martin Scorsese USA 1990 / 2h19m / 18 Blue Velvet Fri 24 February, 15:30 and 20:30 When a severed ear is found on the grounds of a vacant lot, a strange, dark mystery unfolds intertwining the lives of four very different individuals: Jeffrey (Kyle MacLachlin), the naive college student with a penchant for mysteries; Dorothy (Isabella Rossellini), the haunting cabaret singer with a dark and deadly secret; Sandy (Laura Dern), the detective s daughter who embodies the innocence in all of us; and Frank (Dennis Hopper), the psychotic killer fuelled by his own violent fantasies. While Eraserhead was an underground midnight movie success and The Elephant Man and Dune were for-hire Hollywood productions, Blue Velvet was the first film that really introduced the unique vision of David Lynch to the world. It also rejuvenated the acting career of Dennis Hopper; his portrayal of Frank Booth stills stands as one of the most memorably terrifying screen villains. Dir: David Lynch 1986 USA / 2h / 18 Taxi Driver Fri 3 Sun 5 March This story of a lonely, traumatised Vietnam veteran who turns vigilante still has the power to unsettle its audience by posing, but never answering, very difficult moral questions. Indeed, 40 years after its release, viewers still argue about whether Travis Bickle is a hero or monster, a moralist or a madman. We would not, however, still be discussing the film were it not so incredibly well made. Winner of the 1976 Palme d or, Taxi Driver is a tour de force in every department, from Paul Schrader s extraordinary script to Robert De Niro s immaculate and often terrifying performance; to Michael Chapman s photography which transforms New York into a nocturnal Hell of bright neon; to Bernard Herrmann s legendary score, which simultaneously conveys Travis s isolation and sense of menace. And finally, Scorsese s note-perfect direction, which has a taut rigour that can be felt in every element of the film. 21 Film events Exhibition on Screen: I, Claude Monet Tue 21 February, 18:00 From award-winning director Phil Grabsky comes this fresh new look at arguably the world s favourite artist through his own words. Using letters and other private writings I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the pictures that gave birth to impressionism but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite this, and perhaps because of it, Monet s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. Then, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his garden at Giverney, his humour, insight and love of life is revealed. Shot on location in Paris, London, Normandy and Venice I, Claude Monet is a cinematic immersion into some of the most loved and iconic scenes in Western Art. 22 The Most Wonderful Evening of My Life La più bella serata della mia vita Sun 12 March, 15:45 The Most Wonderful Evening of My Life is one of the most wonderful of Ettore Scola s films, featuring a dream cast in a pitch perfect adaptation of the Friedrich Durrenmatt novel A Dangerous Game. Alberto Sordi s genial, easygoing Alfredo breaks down in the Swiss mountains and seeks help at a nearby castle. There he meets four retired judges who beg him to indulge them and play the accused in a mock trial that is being staged. The fun and games quickly turn deadly serious in this gem of a film with echoes of the Agatha Christie classic And Then There Were None. Like Crazy La pazza gioia Sun 12 March, 18:00 Paolo Virzi s bittersweet comedy Like Crazy (La pazza gioia) has been one of the great success stories of Italian cinema over the past year and provides a terrific showcase for the talents of Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Micaela Ramazzotti. Oscar-nominated, the film was an awesome success, with the irreverent presence of LEGO Batman one of the biggest talking points. So Bruce Wayne has re-emerged in a black and yellow movie of his own. There are big changes brewing in Gotham, and whilst Batman struggles to save the city from The Joker s evil plans, he may also have to face up to personal responsibilities and change his lone vigilante status. With a variety of starry voice talent working alongside Will Arnett as Batman, the film also features Zach Galifianakis (Muppets Most Wanted, the Hangover trilogy) as The Joker, with Michael Cera (Juno, TV s Arrested Development) as orphan Dick Grayson and a certain Ralph Fiennes taking on butlering duties as Alfred. It s a Batman movie, certainly just not perhaps from the same mould as the recent big-budget versions... 25 Yu Gi Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions Fri 3 February, 18:00 The stakes have never been higher; the rivalries never as fierce; the risks never so great. One wrong move one card short and it s game over for good. Watership Down Sat 25 Sun 26 February To celebrate the memory of Richard Adams, we are delighted to present the original animated adaptation of his legendary rabbit saga. With a new Netflix/BBC version due later this year, we have a rare chance to revisit the original, featuring the voices of John Hurt, Richard Briers and Zero Mostel. Telling the story of a colony of rabbits fleeing encroaching urbanisation, the classic tale follows their perilous journey to establish a new home where they can live in peace. A decade in the making, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions features new designs and an all-new story from the original creator of the global phenomenon, Kazuki Takahashi. His masterful tale features anime s most beloved characters in their long-awaited return: Yugi Muto, Seto Kaiba, and their faithful friends Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, Téa Gardner, and Bakura. Dir: Satoshi Kuwabara Japan 2016 / 2h10m / recommended 12A Please note that though the film is officially classified as U, the film may not be best suited to very young viewers, as some representations of violence between the rabbit and their enemies are quite forceful. DCA Film Quiz Thu 23 February, 19:00 OK, we re not giving anything too obvious away by pointing out that the 2017 Oscars will be handed out a mere three evenings after this event. Could that indicate there may be a few questions about some of the 2,497 13½ tall golden statuettes each weighing 8½ lbs handed out to date? Hmmm... Or maybe it will be business as usual with a tantalising smörgåsbord of questions about (amongst others) Star Wars, Tom Cruise, Ennio Morricone and Rosemary s Baby? There s only one way to find out. Gather together a team of up to five people (or if you have loads of friends then why not bring them all and have your own little inter-team rivalry?) and book yourselves in for a real test of your cinematic mettle. Will you be golden, like Oscar? Or leaden, like...er...(insert base metal-related film title here)? 2 per person for teams up to five people. Advance booking highly recommended. Rated 15. Tickets

28 Scottish Encounters New film talent Scottish Encounters is a new strand in our programme that gives local audiences the opportunity to see new work from emerging Scottish screen talent, from shorts to features and from documentary to fiction. Each screening will also provide a chance to meet the people behind the work. Swan Sat 18 February, 13:00 We are delighted to present compelling Scottish short Swan followed by an in-depth panel discussion focused on both the filmmaking process and issues raised in the film. When approaching the age of 16, most children look forward to becoming more independent; the freedom to make your own decisions a scary but exciting prospect. April is like most children her age, enjoying music and playing by the sea, but independence is far more difficult to achieve. April has autism, and lives with the challenge of profound sensory and learning difficulties. Director Lindsay Brown sensitively captures the loving relationship between April and her mother Sami and the issues they face on a daily basis. Made locally, Swan is a well-crafted and intriguing addition to Scottish documentary and short film, and an important reminder that in Scotland we are privileged to have a system that supports children with additional needs; from carers to schools like New Struan School, which caters for pupils across the autism spectrum with different levels of communication, social understanding and sensory needs. This event is free but ticketed. Donations to New Struan School will be welcomed on the door. Joining us for the panel discussion are April s mother Sami, director Lindsay Brown, producer Anne Milne, and Jasmine Miller, principal of New Struan School. At the peak of his success, aged 25, he walked away, driven to the brink of self-destruction by stardom his talent more a burden than a gift. The film includes a special contribution from renowned photographer and director David LaChapelle, who in 2015 shot Polunin s dance to Hozier s Take Me to Church and generated over 10 million YouTube views within two months of its release online. Dancer is an unprecedented look into the life of a complex young man who has made ballet go viral. Tickets I 9 students and under 21s Bolshoi: Swan Lake (Encore screening) Sun 5 February, 15:00 This screening is followed by a Q&A and live performance by Dancer star Sergei Polunin, brought to the big screen live via satellite. Dir: Steve Cantor UK / Russia / Ukraine / USA 2017 / 1h25m / 12A By moonlight on the shore of a mysterious lake, Prince Siegfried meets the bewitched swan-woman Odette. Completely spellbound by her beauty, he swears his love to her. However, the Prince realises too late that Fate has another plan for him... A ballet of ultimate beauty, and a score of unparalleled perfection, born at the Bolshoi in In the dual role of the white swan Odette and her rival black swan Odile, prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova exudes both vulnerability and cunning through superb technical mastery, alongside Denis Rodkin as a powerful and emotional Siegfried. Including breathtaking scenes with the Bolshoi s corps de ballet, this is classical ballet at its finest. Tickets 15 I 12 students and under 21s Tickets
