This showstopper enthralls audience members as he expresses soul through his playing. The young Spanish musician has been referred to as the global ambassador of Spanish guitar by Billboard Magazine, and his chart-topping performances have garnered him over 30 international awards. Whether he is performing on the Amazon River or reaching out to the youth through music programs, Villegas connects passionately and directly with his audience. This is the behind-the-scenes true story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds, and sold 175 million records worldwide, all before they were 30. The musical features such Four Seasons hits as Big Girls Don t Cry, Sherry, Walk Like a Man, Oh, What a Night, and Can t Take My Eyes Off You. Contains strong language. 3

Founder and artistic director Kun- Yang Lin has assembled a troupe that shines with the opportunity to tell a story, adding an inspiring intensity to every movement. Lin brings his Asian heritage to contemporary dance, always looking for new ways to embody innovative interpretations based on the ancient traditions of eastern wisdom. Joining KYL/D for one of the works will be specially selected members of the IUP Dance Theater. This event will be presented in celebration of International Education Week. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Manfred Honeck, conducting Monday, October 30; 8:00 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center They re back! Join us as we welcome the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as they return to IUP for another spectacular concert. Once again led by Maestro Manfred Honeck, the symphony will be gracing our stage with Beethoven s Eroica symphony, among other works. Starting in 1895, the PSO is an international sensation. Now well into its second century, PSO continues to adapt and remain relevant for everyone interested in classical music. 4 Black Violin Wednesday, November 8; 8:00 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center Black Violin s Wilner Wil B Baptiste and Kevin Kev Marcus Sylvester encourage and empower people of all ages and all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to find what connects us rather than shine a light on what divides us. Blending classical with contemporary pop, R&B, and hip hop, the pair challenges the world s view of what it means to rise above labels, be daring enough to follow their passion; and most of all, be true to themselves. 5 Credit: Joseph Cultice Credit: Zoran Jelenic Credit: Tim Black The Hot Sardines with the IUP Jazz Ensemble Sunday, December 3; 7:00 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center Offering up a concert that will include some holiday tunes and a few numbers with the IUP Jazz Ensemble, this performance is a wonderful treat for all ages and all music lovers from all walks of life. With a mid-20th century style and influence from a wide variety of artists and genres, The Hot Sardines performance is filled with music that feeds your heart and soul. Based out of New York, the group will treat you to music of horn arrangements, piano melodies, vocals, and even some tap dancing on the side. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo Monday, February 5; 8:00 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center An international hit in every way, this all-male professional dance group presents traditional ballet in a wildly entertaining way unlike no other. This troupe is a not-to-be-missed, one-of-a-kind, fun-for-all-ages experience that summons the likes of Milton Berle, Dame Edna, and Rue Paul combined with some of the most athletic dance and drag-defying comedy of our time all en pointe. Founded by a group of ballet enthusiasts, the group has earned their way from performing late shows in Broadway lofts to having traveled across more than 33 countries and more than 500 cities. The River: ETHEL with Robert Mirabal Thursday, February 22; 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall Continuing a deeply successful six-year collaboration inspired by ceremonies dedicated to the Sun, ETHEL and Native American musician, instrument builder, and three-time Grammy winner Robert Mirabal present an evolution of the cross-cultural concert experience. The inspiration this time is Water as the embodiment of Spirit. The audience is immersed in a flow of music, narrative, and ritual that evokes timeless Native American traditions through contemporary musical artistry. Established in New York City, ETHEL is one of America s most adventurous string quartets blending uptown musicianship with a downtown genre-crossing style. 5

6 Credit: Nikolaj Lund Credit: Lynn Goldsmith U.S. Debut Jacob Shaw, cello Tuesday, March 6; 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall Award-winning cellist Jacob Shaw has given concerts around the world in Europe, Asia, and North America. After releasing his debut album in 2015, he received rave reviews listing him as one of the most charismatic and distinctive performers. Shaw has established Radical Classic as an alternative movement to form a diverse generation of music lovers with his extensive repertoire and fresh approach to the classics. A native of Great Britain now calling Copenhagen home, he performs traditional works that range from sonatas to folk music, offering a fresh approach to everything he so expertly performs. Lise de la Salle, piano Tuesday, March 20; 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, 2nd Floor Sutton Hall Lise de la Salle, a pianist on the prestigious Steinway Artist roster, is noted by critics for her maturity and superb artistic skills. Making her concerto debut at age 13, de la Salle quickly became an internationally recognized performer. With her award-winning recordings on the Naïve label and Gramophone Magazine selecting her Bach/Liszt performance as Recording of the Month, she provides a breathtaking performance everywhere she goes. A native of Chebourg, France, she has performed with major orchestras, in major concert halls, and at many prominent festivals across the globe. HAYA: Migration Concert Thursday, April 5; 8:00 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center HAYA band is an award-winning music collective from Beijing, making their debut U.S. performance in Fisher Auditorium. Representing a new era in Asian folk music, they have received the Taiwan Golden Melody Award for Best Crossover Music on two occasions along with the Chinese Media Award. HAYA expresses their understanding of modern Mongolian music and their passion for nature and the voice of their hearts while infusing a definitely modern sound. Their Migration tour is about searching for one s own spiritual home and returning to a simplistic, survivalist lifestyle while employing innovative musical language alongside traditional songs. 6

With songs by Grammy and Tony winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Winner of the Tony for Best Musical in 2013, Kinky Boots is inspired by true events as it takes you from a gentlemen s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. A Tony and Drama Desk award winner for his renowned performance in Bob Fosse s Pippin, Ben s other Broadway credits include Wicked, I m Not Rappaport, Chicago, Hair, Fosse, and others. His movie titles include Funny Lady, Sweet Charity, All That Jazz, and The Zoo Gang. A short list of his extensive TV credits include How I Met Your Mother, Grey s Anatomy, Hot in Cleveland, NCIS, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, OZ, and Star Trek The Next Generation. The IUP Dance Theater presents this much-loved story bringing the oddball characters, comical situations, and timeless love story to life. This is another performance amusingly appropriate for all ages. Twelfth Night By William Shakespeare Directed by Michael Hood April and 18-21, 8:00 p.m.; and April 15, 2:00 p.m.; Waller Hall Mainstage Theater, IUP Performing Arts Center Shakespeare s brilliant exploration of human love in its many forms...a masterpiece replete with unforgettable characters, music, dance, spectacle, and comedy for every taste. Figaro! Figaro! Figaro! By Rossini and Mozart Based on plays by Pierre Beaumarchais Directed by Oliver Lo May 2, 4, and 5, 7:30 p.m.; Waller Hall Mainstage Theater, IUP Performing Arts Center Produced by IUP Music Theater, this unique blend includes two 45-minute abridged comic operas in one night The Barber of Seville by Rossini and The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. See how Figaro helps Count Almaviva win the heart of Rosina in the first episode followed by how Figaro defends his own bride from the Count in the second half. MozartFest Saturday, October 21, 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall Arias from well-known operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart come alive on the Gorell stage as members of the IUP faculty perform these classic hits. Leaves of Grass Friday, November 10, 8:00 p.m. Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall Leaves of Grass, the iconic collection of poems by the renowned American poet Walt Whitman, is given a new voice in this beautiful jazz setting composed by Fred Hersch. Join jazz vocalist Laura Ferguson and the IUP Chamber Jazz Ensemble as they continue this celebration of American music and poetry. Sing in the Holiday! The Road to Yale: IUP Wind Ensemble Saturday, March 3, 7:30 p.m. Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center This concert celebrates wind band music of the past and present. A list of composers will include Robert Litton, Vincent Persichetti, Charles Ives, Carter Pann, and Martin Ellerby. The concert will be repeated at Yale University following a prestigious invitation for IUP to perform at the 2018 College Band Directors National Association conference. 10

13 Memory and Magic: Folk Artists in Western Pennsylvania February 3-March 10 Reception February 3, 6:00-8:30 p.m. University Museum, First Floor Sutton Hall Folk art featuring scenes of daily life such as those painted by Linton Park, Eunice McCloskey, Richard Cooper, and others are featured in this exhibit. Also included are imaginative works of Mary Hamilton of Clarion County and others. The pieces are from the University Museum permanent collection and on loan from private collections. 14 All About Subscriptions and Tickets The Lively Arts continues to keep ticket prices incredibly low a fraction of what you would pay, for example, in Pittsburgh for the exact same production. There are three basic subscription package choices that are designed to fit your needs. The deadline to order your subscription is Monday, September 25, and while seats remain available. All Ovations! Subscription Subscribe to all 13 Ovations! events and you will save up to 15 percent off the single-ticket price. It s easy, and it gives you all the variety offered in the Ovations! series, securing your reserved seats before the season begins. You will save up to $61 per Ovations! subscription. Totally Everything Package One of the most popular packages for more than 25 years, this gives you a ticket for every event and still saves you up to 15 percent off single-ticket prices. You will get to see all 13 Ovations! events, along with the other events presented by Theater-bythe-Grove, Dance Theater, Music Theater, and Sound Choices. You will save up to $79 per Totally Everything subscription package. Flex Pak: Pick 8 The Flex Pak is something that may just fit your needs perfectly. Order at least one ticket to at least eight different events, and you re done. The ticket price is the same as the already low single-ticket price, and you get all of your tickets up front before they go on sale to the general public. Let us know if you have questions or need assistance. How Is Your Order Filled? All orders will be acknowledged by or telephone within 10 days. All subscriptions are filled and seats assigned in the order in which requests are received. Premiere Club members contributing $250 or more receive exclusive priority through July 31 and top daily priority after that. All other orders are filled starting August 1. When Are Your Tickets Sent? We will begin sending printed tickets no later than August 28, well in advance of the first subscription event. I-Card Information You may purchase up to four subscriptions per I-Card and must provide your currently-valid Banner ID number when ordering. To receive the I-Card price, your activity fee must be paid for the upcoming academic year before August 29. Performance Seating Seating for Ovations! events in Fisher Auditorium are reserved, and seating for Gorell Recital Hall events are by general admission. 15 Purchasing Single Tickets If you are not subscribing to any of the money and time saving subscription plans, single tickets will be available at the full price starting August 29. Online and Mobile Friendly The easiest way to get your single tickets will be online at iup.edu/livelyarts with tickets available up to the start of the performance or as seats remain. The site is perfectly mobile friendly. Ticket Fees There is a $3.00 per ticket fee for any single tickets purchased in advance online or at the Performing Arts Center, the lowest fee around. If you wish for us to mail you the tickets, there is an additional $6.00 fee per order. Subscribers pay a $6.00 per order handling fee but avoid paying a per ticket fee. 17 ArtsPath provides arts-in-education services to a five-county region in schools, senior centers, and other groups where the arts are used in an educational setting. Through artist residencies, master classes, lectures, demonstrations, and various workshops, thousands of area school students, IUP students, and community members interact directly with a variety of professional performing and visual artists. ArtsPath, under the Lively Arts umbrella, is a consortium of area educators, administrators, students, residents, and civic leaders. The mission of ArtsPath centers on promoting high-quality arts experiences, establishing the use of art in education across all curricula as a priority, offering regional services, generating communitywide and regional support, and promoting the arts classroom teacher as integral to a student s complete education. Every Ovations! event the Lively Arts presents has associated outreach activities with hundreds of area and university students from workshops in schools to campus visits by school students to master classes to lecture-demonstrations. Entering its fifth year, the IUP Community Music School provides the region with private lessons, group music instruction, and ensemble opportunities on the IUP campus at a variety of price points. The school supports and enhances public and private school music education and performance both locally and regionally and includes three performance ensembles. The IUP Community Music School is also affiliated with the IUP String Project, an established comprehensive string education program. Tuition and registration costs are kept extremely low through the generosity and support of S&T Bank, IUP Dining, IUP College of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts through the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance. 19 Some Other News and Info! It s Even More Important This Year to Get Your Tickets in Advance...Why? The Lively Arts is assuming the management of our ticketing system, previously handled by the Student Cooperative Association. One big change in our operation will be to make single tickets for all series events this season available on August 29. That s great because it will make it much easier for everyone to get tickets whenever they want, 24/7. But that also means that unless you get your subscription now, the best seats will continue to disappear, especially for the most popular shows. And they will be more expensive. So, don t wait until the only seats left are in the back rows or even worse, none at all. So, subscribe now! Extra Special Discounts Groups: Do you have a group of 15 or more wanting to attend one of our events? Just contact us, and we will give you a discount of $2 on each ticket a savings of at least $30 off your order. Youth Experience Special: Are you a teacher, scout leader, or youth group coordinator and want to organize a trip to one of our shows? We would love to have you and have designed a special savings plan for youth groups. For every 10 student tickets purchased, your group will receive one free regular ticket for a chaperone. And if your group brings 15 or more students, you will also receive the $2 per ticket group ticket discount. That could be a savings of up to $78 or more.
