We ve tried to squeeze in as many screenings as possible so that you don t miss the brilliant performances and films on offer at this time of year. By the time the programme starts, we will know who won the BAFTAs and Oscars, but we recommend watching as many of the nominees as possible the voters don t always get it right! And we have more screenings of La La Land after its huge success in February. We are thrilled to welcome actor Jo Hartley back to Saffron Screen. She features as a concerned midwife in Alice Lowe s dark and funny Prevenge and will be joining us for a Q&A after the film. Beauty and the Beast promises to be a delight for all ages, a live-action version of the Disney musical classic packed with brilliant actors. We have managed to get the film just a few weeks after it opens and will be showing it twice a day in the Easter holidays. We are very excited about all our Event Cinema screenings both in this programme and running into the summer. Drawing on Irvine Welsh s sequel novel Porno, the fi lm forges new paths while remembering the glory days of yore; but primarily this is a fi lm about friendship and middle age. A worthy sequel to the vital and iconic original. Old wounds and deepseated frustrations erupt as the director explores the dramatic power and claustrophobic nature of dysfunctional family relationships. There are, however, big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up a little. They were imprisoned and then exiled from their state, families and home. It took another decade for US law to change. Nichols dramatises their story without sentimentality or embellishment and the two leads play out their love story with great sensitivity. The fi lm follows the interconnecting lives of a lawyer who fi nds herself contending with both offi ce sexism and a hostage situation; a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. Directed and performed when Lowe herself was seven months pregnant, this is a darkly comic take on society s perception of pregnant women. Murderous but fun! A warm and funny ensemble comedy which looks at the various stages of womanhood during a time of huge social and cultural change. The cast are all terrific, but Bening dominates the film with a standout performance. Powerhouse performances from Washington as Troy and Davis as his long-suffering wife, Rose, reprising their roles from the 2010 Broadway production, make this a compelling drama dealing with themes of family dynamics, ambition, race and the American Dream. Emad, a teacher, and Rana, his stay-at-home wife, are rehearsing an amateur production of Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman in which they play careworn Willy Loman and his wife, Linda. Preparations for the play are going well until Rana and Emad suffer a disturbing domestic incident which triggers emotional fault lines across their marriage. Exploring challenging questions of morality and retribution, this is a beautifully observed, painstakingly crafted drama.
