4 RAGE > Features Wednesday June 30, 2010 Youths meet jazz MPYO members show talent By NASA MARIA ENTABAN TENOR saxophonist Adil Johan never dreamt he would ever get a chance to play alongside legendary jazz musicians, but thanks to the initiative of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), he has not only gained a wealth of knowledge, but also fond memories from the experience. Adil is a participant in the Encounter Jazz Programme (EJP), which is led by Marques Young. Together with the MPYO performers, the EJP members recently shared the stage with six renowned jazz musicians. The visiting musicians were saxophonist Fritz Renold, jazz trumpeter and Grammy Award winner Randy Brecker, bassist Reggie Hamilton, drummer Danny Gottlieb, pianist Christian Jacob and trumpeter Steve Reid. The show included works by Duke Ellington Harlem and Night Creature as well as Suite Nusantara, a five-movement celebration representing the myriad of Malaysian music culture in the past and present. Adil said he felt humbled by the experience of playing alongside the visiting musicians, as well as the MPYO. Under normal circumstances, I would never have an opportunity to work with a 100-piece orchestra. At the same time I faced many meaningful challenges both musically and psychologically. The music we played was the most challenging piece I ve ever had to perform, said Adil. The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) had a chance to play alongside six renowned jazz musicians, Fritz Renold; brainchild of Jazzaar and saxophonist, Randy Brecker; legendary jazz trumpeter, along with the Bostonian Friends featuring Reggie Hamilton (bass), Danny Gottlieb (drums), Christian Jacob (piano) and Steve Reid (trumpet).
5 Prior to the performances at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the youths went through a 10-day camp at SEGi University, under the apprenticeship of Jazzaar Association musicians. The association combines music education with cultural exchange; young musicians are encouraged to work closely with professionals for a grand music production and orchestration before premiering with a final performance to the public. Fritz Renold, founder and director of the Jazzaar Association, explained what went on during the camp. The initial seven days of the camp were dedicated to intensive orchestral and sectional rehearsals to study in depth all three works, said Renold. At the end of each day there was a workshop conducted by the Jazzaar musicians on relevant themes for the youth as a collective. These were conducted in various forms such as lectures, a question and answer session as well as interactive playing and demonstration, he added. The youths went through several workshops involving jazz grooves and rhythms, jazz phrasing and playing in the funk style, among others, during the camp. In the 10 days the musicians spent with the youths, Renold noticed that the members of MPYO possesed a high level of musicianship and an eagerness to learn, adapting well to every situation. There is a stark difference that we notice between the MPYO members and the youths in Europe or in the West in general the lack of apathy! The focus and discipline are impressive especially that they do not talk during rehearsals, enthused Renold. Respect for each other with a great team spirit and the respect towards the compositions was evident by how they employed their time to help each other really sink into the music, he continued, commending the synergy between the conductor, youth and professional musicans. For Adil, a professional club musician, the camp was a little different than his usual 10pm gigs and jam sessions. I was in the saxophone section under Fritz Renold. He guided us as a unit and we learned some very important lessons in working as a team. More importantly, he regaled us with stories and anecdotes from his immense experiences playing with jazz legends. I realised that in an orchestra or large ensemble, individual effort is only as important as its contribution to a larger whole, a greater purpose, and in this case this greater purpose or goal was the totality of the music we were performing as an ensemble, said Adil. From a composer s point of view, Renold found it a pleasure to witness how the young musicians learned to interpret the music and how much they enjoyed playing it. The music was not easy to play and thus we felt very gratified by the high concentration and attention from the youth during the rehearsals. They were very open to our comments and suggestions, he said. Adil found himself continuosly humbled by the sheer skill and experience of the jazz musicians. It was always inspiring to hear Steve Reid devastate the hall with his trumpet s stratospheric high notes. It was exciting to hear Reggie Hamilton s soulful virtuosity as he supported the orchestra and band with his groovy bass lines, and it was humbling and awe-inspiring to hear the years of experience and profound musical substance of Randy Brecker when he played solo Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd (Co No D)
