2 P 2 F F Childhood Memories Stephanie Rhoades, Conductor & Artistic Director...you will be reminded of a time when you were young, innocent, and carefree. Music has a very powerful connection to our memories. Often, when we hear a favorite song we also conjure up images of people and places that we have associated with it. When I hear Beethoven s Für Elise, I often recall my mother s piano students taking lessons in our home. When I hear Heart and Soul, I think of the numerous children (myself included) who crowded around the piano on the stage of the fellowship hall in the church where I grew up. One of us would start the accompaniment and then another (sometimes more than one!) would improvise on the melody. It didn t seem to matter if you took piano lessons or not you knew how the melody went! The telltale sign of a piano student was that she didn t use just one finger to pluck out the melody Throughout my elementary school years I learned assorted songs some were holiday songs ( Frosty the Snowman and Peter Cottontail ) while others were patriotic songs ( My Country Tis of Thee ) or folk songs ( Jimmy Crack Corn ). While I couldn t recall on the spot all of the songs I learned growing up, when I hear one that I recognize, I usually have a memory or a visual association that accompanies it. Thinking about the soundtrack of my childhood inspired the music for our spring performances. Childhood Memories is about remembering the moments in our lives that were joyous and innocent. We may have been born in different eras, but there are songs that we can all identify with, and there are songs that remind us of a time when the burdens of being a responsible adult were nowhere in sight. Join us for an evening of great music, and the premiere of Karen Thompson s arrangement of movements from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns a work that he wrote for pure fun instead of working on his Third Symphony. Whether or not you heard these songs growing up, you will be reminded of a time when you were young, innocent, and care-free.

3 V 14, I 2 P 3 Carnival of the Animals Our concerts this spring will include some selections from the Saint- Saëns classic Carnival of the Animals. It was my pleasure arranging these pieces for Concert Bells of Fort Worth. Saint-Saëns composed Carnival of the Animals for fun and never intended it to be published, as he was afraid that it would detract from his reputation as a serious composer. The work consists of fourteen movements that depict different animals, but Saint-Saëns amused himself by parodying music and musicians of his day. For instance, in Tortoises, Saint- Saëns used a movement from Offenbach s operetta Orpheus in the Underworld. This movement is commonly called Can-can, and is usually played at a fast tempo. But Saint-Saëns arranged it at a very slow tempo to depict the tortoises. Can you imagine it on handbells? In Fossils, Saint-Saëns used a xylophone to evoke images of skeletons. He also quotes one of his own pieces, Danse macabre, and several other pieces, including Rossini s The Barber of Seville and a French nursery rhyme that Englishspeaking folks know as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Perhaps Saint- Saëns thought that his fellow composers and their tunes were relics? We hope you will join us at one of our concerts to hear Tortoises and Fossils. We are also doing the movement called Introduction and March of the Royal Lions, in which you will hear the roar of the lions emanating from handbells! We will hop smartly during Kangaroos. Of course, we will perform the most famous movement, The Swan, and another movement that is quite famous, The Aquarium. If only Saint-Saëns were around today, I am sure he would appreciate the fun we have had with his Carnival of the Animals. Karen Thompson, President Music Makers We have several Music Makers in our group. What is a Music Maker, you ask? Anyone who gives a specific item or designates a gift to buy that item, which can be done in your own name or in honor/memory of someone else. We can arrange for a special plate or label on some items. Handbells from C#8 to G8 begin at $246. Are you a Music Maker? Would you like to dedicate a handbell in memory or honor of someone? Contact any member of CBFW and they will be happy to steer you in the right direction so that you can become a Music Maker today! Current Music Makers are: Anonymous Their gift: B2 handbell Michael & Ginger Bodino; their gift: sheet music In honor of Lori Haaland & Paula Miller Dale & Valerie Martin Their gift: Lower 6 th octave chimes Herb & Roberta Seem; their gift: sheet music In honor of Quinda Hatfield Mary Lou Smith; her gift: sheet music In memory of Elnora Fetterolf Rick Thompson Family (Rick, Karen, Alice & Helen) Their gift: D8 handbell Dedicated in memory of Cora Latta

6 P 6 F F Many Wishes Fulfilled! Over recent years we have obtained a good deal of new equipment, some with designated gifts from our Music Makers, and some from general funds received from Friends or from concert offerings/fees/ticket sales. What have we acquired? Lower 6th octave chimes (the big ones), with their rack, paid for by a designated gift. Battery-operated lights, bought with undesignated funds. Upper 6th octave bells (the teeny ones). The money for one bell was a designated gift; the rest we purchased with undesignated funds. Port-a-Bell cases for the basic five-octave set of bells, bought with undesignated funds. And most recently, the purchase price of a B2 aluminum bell was given to us by an anonymous donor. Undesignated funds covered the appropriate mallet and shipping. This bell will make its debut at our Spring 2014 concerts. Thank you to all these donors, as well as to the Music Makers who have given us funds for purchases of sheet music. Jean Harden, Treasurer Our Wish List We continue to wish for a bell tree stand (cost: a bit over $300) and the lower 7th octave of chimes, plus the appropriate mallets for those (cost of individual items ranges from $79 for a mallet to $760 for a chime; package price is $6,750 plus shipping). The aluminum B2 now belongs to us, thanks to our generous anonymous donor, and currently we can borrow the G2. Our next wish would be to fill in the notes between those two. That would require three bells: A#, A, and G#; those would cost $2,925 (each, for A# and A) or $2,980 (G#), plus about $51 shipping per bell. Can you help us obtain any of this equipment? Donations to the Wish List Fund are greatly appreciated, as are undesignated gifts by our Friends! C? D W L F, F!
