1 Celebrating 47 Years of Excellence It is a privilege and pleasure for the Rotary Clubs of Belleville, Trenton and Quinte Sunrise to welcome you to the 47th Annual Rotary Music Festival. It is our sincere belief that all who participate in the Music Festival will gain a sense of satisfaction, pride and accomplishment as they prepare for and demonstrate their musical talents. We believe that everyone benefits from the professional adjudication and review that is given. We extend our best wishes to each performer in the Festival with hope that the experience you gain will be a true benefit in your future. We want to make this experience as much fun as possible. We are providing more workshops during the festival plus we will be giving the Gold, Silver and Maroon Seals to everyone according to their marks. Therefore, we could have more than one Gold recipient. We want to acknowledge the hard work of our Students. Without the financial support so generously given by individuals, businesses and organizations through donations, awards and advertising, the Rotary Music Festival would not be possible. On behalf of all of the participants, the Community-at-large and the sponsoring Rotary Clubs, we express our sincere gratitude. We would also like to express our appreciation to the music teachers of the area whose support, advice and time and encouragement raise this Festival to the standard of excellence that it has enjoyed for many years. We extend special thanks to those who have freely given of their time to assist in the preparation of the syllabus and program. We wish to acknowledge publicly the planning, preparation and coordination by the Music Festival Committee. Thank you to all the Rotarians and friends who volunteer during the festival. 26 ROTARY LOVES KIDS The Rotary Club of Belleville loves kids and youth check out some of our other programs for children and young people, below. Job Talk Job talk is a program for high school and college students which place students in a workplace, to find out about that career area, for a day or half day. Rotarians and friends of Rotary accept students into their workplace to help them understand more about specific careers and jobs in those environments. Contact Birgit Wartenberg (ask@wartenbergbusinessconsulting.ca), or the Rotary Club web site ( or see your Guidance Counsellor, for application forms. Camp Enterprise Camp Enterprise is a program for high school students where participants, selected by their schools, learn about entrepreneurship and business. The program is operated as a two-day Camp. The program is a multi-club event with students from Trenton, Belleville, Peterborough, Brighton, Campbellford and surrounding areas. It takes place at Trent University in Peterborough. Rotarians act as business mentors and chaperones for the event. The students learn about business and also learn more about themselves and their peers from other schools. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards ( RYLA ) is a program for young people, which is organized on a District level. RYLA is a life-changing experience for young people aged Each year the Rotary Club of Belleville sponsors at least one qualified individual to attend a one-week leadership training program, all expenses paid. The District 7070 RYLA program, Leadership Begins With Me, provides an opportunity for the participants to get to know themselves better and to cultivate the respect and trust of others. They are able to identify their own leadership skills and determine ways to make more effective use of their resources. Their enthusiasm and technique is brought back to the community from which the participants were sponsored, and thus impacts on the young people being influenced by these youthful leaders. For more information, go to Rotary Inter-Club Spelling Bee The Rotary Inter-Club Spelling Bee is a spelling bee competition for elementary school students in Hastings and Prince Edward and Northumberland Counties. The students are placed in either the Junior division (grades 4, 5, 6) or Senior division (grades 7, 8). Each school that chooses to participate will hold an in - school Spelling Bee to determine the School winners who will receive prizes. The winners will then attend the Regional Spelling Bee in May at Loyalist College, where a winner will be chosen for each division. Prizes will again be awarded to the students as well as to the schools for resources to enhance their literacy programs. Rotary Youth Exchange The Rotary Club of Belleville is looking for interested students who would be suitable for an exchange overseas in a non- English speaking country. Students aged 15 to 17 would be considered to spend one year abroad through the Rotary Youth Exchange. 26

27 Students should be willing to forego a year of credits, have 'reasonable' grades, and be open to change...the benefits of participating in a youth exchange are: travel, learn a new language,; experience a different culture; become an ambassador for the Quinte area and Canada; make lifelong friends, worldwide. We also ask that the families of Outbound Students be willing to host Inbound Students involved with the exchange for a 3 month period. Other host families will be identified for the remainder of the year. To find out more about the Rotary Youth Exchange program, please visit Google "Rotary Youth Exchange" or contact me - Sam Brady (sam.brady@cibc.ca) - the Club's coordinator of Youth Exchange. Our Rotary district currently conducts exchanges with Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Taiwan and Chile. Interested students should complete the preliminary application, and scan it/send it back before October 1 st, 2015). An Outbound Student selection for the year will be made by the Club s Youth Exchange Committee by December 1st, Rotary Youth Exchange - live the experience of a lifetime! Mayors of the Week The Rotary Club partners with the City of Belleville and 7 local high schools to take teens on a one week tour of how our city works. Neil Ellis (former Mayor) said It provides our future leaders with a unique opportunity to observe the internal operation of the municipality as well as the impact of Council s decisions on our residents and taxpayers. Amanda (youth participant) said "This program is incredibly insightful and inspires youth leadership. Opening the doors to the inner workings of the city took away the intimidation and made it real. Literacy Each One Teach One This is a program that helps a child who is struggling with reading by providing a trained volunteer tutor to work with the same student, one on one each week, following a set curriculum. It is meant to help those families where commercial tutoring is not an option. It is provided by the Rotary Club of Belleville; we have two community partners, the YMCA and the Core Centre, where the tutoring takes place. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor, or if you would like a free reading assessment for your child, contact Rotarian Sharon McConnell, sharonmcconnell50@gmail.com Special Needs Christmas party a party is held every winter, prior to Christmas, for families of special needs children, including a turkey dinner and a visit from Santa Claus. Rotary Bursaries/Scholarships Every year, the Rotary Club of Belleville gives scholarships to high school students who have demonstrated the spirit of volunteerism, at school and in the community. The recipients are selected by school staff. Loyalist College students are recipients of specific scholarships in memory of Rotarians who have passed away. These awards are given to students selected by staff at the college. 27

45 The late Bernice and Jack Parrott, Honorary Patrons of the Quinte Rotary Music Festival That action is best which procures the greatest happiness for the greatest numbers. Francis Hutcheson (1720) In the continued spirit of philanthropy the Parrotts have become known and respected for, a bequest from the Parrotts will continue to benefit thousands of young musicians in the area through the Quinte Rotary Music Festival. Sadly, Jack Parrott died in the summer of 2005, and Bernice died in The Music Festival is now celebrating its 47th year, and 11 years ago became the recipient of a significant gift from Jack and Bernice Parrott through the Parrott Foundation. This very special gift is in the form of a Trust. The interest earned annually will be applied towards the cash awards given to deserving students each year. These monetary awards acknowledge superior musicianship and help encourage the youth of our area to enjoy and pursue their passion for music. Bernice (Robinson) Parrott studied music from a very early age and was the youngest pupil graduating in 1932 with her ACCM from the College of Music. She then went on to teach music in over eight schools at the same time for the pricely sum of $50.00 per year and taught piano lessons for.35 to.50 cents an hour. Over the years, both Jack and Bernice in their own quiet way, assisted several individual musicians and groups such as Symphonia as these fledging musicians pursued their careers. Jack and Bernice s most recent gift will continue this wonderful legacy of helping young musicians further develop their musical abilities. The Quinte Rotary Music Festival and the Belleville Rotary Club salute and thank Jack and Bernice Parrott for this very generous and wonderful gift. Please join us in remembering and recognizing them as Honorary Patrons of the Quinte Rotary Music Festival. 45
