3 LEEDS GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY LEEDS GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCI- ETY was first known as Hunslet St Silas Choral and Operatic Society and it began its life over 100 years ago - in 1909 to be precise. A group of young people decided to support the local church as a means of healthy recreation and to foster and develop a love of music in Hunslet. This area of Leeds was at the time a thriving centre for the engineering industry and the Society had many members who were, by day, involved in some way or another with that industry. The Society not only survived through two world wars, economic depression and major slum clearance in Hunslet but still went from strength to strength, producing Gilbert and Sullivan shows, other musicals and choral work. In 1953 the Society took their production of HMS Pinafore to the Leeds Civic Theatre and in 1954 was granted permission by Leeds City Council to use the Leeds Coat of Arms on its stationery. That same year the name of the Society was changed to The Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society. The Society continued to enjoy enormous success at the Civic Theatre and then more recently at the Carriageworks Theatre in the centre of Leeds, winning many awards. Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society (like the character in The Mikado) has always been the Go-To Society for quality productions. The Society continues to offer healthy recreation, on and off stage, to our 90+ members whilst sharing a passion for Gilbert and Sullivan and many other forms of musical theatre. In 2016, we produced Offenbach s Orpheus in the Underworld and other smaller recent productions have included I Love You, You re Perfect, Now Change, Into the Woods and She Loves Me. In the coming season Trial by Jury is to be produced in May and in October the Society is going on tour, presenting the premiere of a unique and very special Gilbert and Sullivan topsy-turvy production! In March 2018, the Society s annual main production will be The Mikado. The Society is delighted and thrilled to be presenting Kiss Me, Kate. We welcome our new Musical Director, Jonathan Drummond, who has so ably and amicably guided us through the wonderful music of Cole Porter. We are also indebted to our Artistic Director, Anita Adams. As usual she has inspired and energised us, even putting a few of us through a few dance routines! Both Jonathan and Anita have worked extremely hard to bring you another amazing production. Thank you for your continued support and in particular our Friends of the Society, without whom we could not survive. So it s another op nin, another show and we do hope you enjoy this show tonight! 4 Ford s Theatre Thoughtless persons annoy patrons and distract actors and endanger the safety of others by lighting matches during the performance and intermissions. This violates a city ordinance and renders the offender liable to a summons from the fireman on duty. It is urged that all patrons refrain from lighting matches in the auditorium of this theatre. THE PLAYBILL A WEEKLY PUBLICATION OF PLAYBILL INCORPORATED Week begining 20th March 1948 Kiss Me, Kate FOR LEEDS GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SOCIETY, Kiss Me, Kate is obviously quite a departure. The theatrical climate of the world has changed significantly since the Hunslet St Silas Choral and Operatic Society became the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society in the 1950s and we could no longer survive performing G&S alone. The company has a diverse and vibrant membership who were ready for a new challenge and should be commended for taking a risk. We owe it to both our membership and audiences to provide a myriad of performance experiences and we hope you enjoy this as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. Having said this, it was important to us to remain classic in our approach to theatrical endeavours. So Kiss Me, Kate seemed a lovely choice, a classic 40s musical with Cole Porter s timeless score. This show has allowed us to explore the works of Shakespeare, experiment with the wonderful jazzy rhythms of 1940s music and most of all dance like we have had never had opportunity before. Kiss Me, Kate is actually a fairly tricky story to tell. It belongs well and truly in the 1940s due to the very outdated references to the treatment of women. The story of Taming of the Shrew itself is a very difficult story to present and provides a directorial challenge. How can we do justice to this comic piece whilst still managing to maintain the integrity of the romance to a modern audience? For this reason the piece has remained solidly set in the 1940s but you will notice some intentional changes to the representation of some of the women and scenes, not least the casting of a female gangster. The cast have been taken well and truly out of their comfort zone and have worked tirelessly to bring this show to the Carriageworks stage. Thank you for staying with us through our journey into new experiences and fear not, Gilbert and Sullivan fans, we shall return next year with the Mikado! Have a lovely show! 6 Who s who in the cast In order of appearance HEATHER GREENWOOD (Hattie) Heather has been performing on stage since she was seven years old and has been lucky enough to play several lead roles with Leeds Youth Opera and Leeds G&S with whom this is her fourth show. Outside of theatre Heather is a music graduate (Leeds 2012) and teaches singing and music in Leeds. KATIE LISTER (Ralph) Katie is celebrating her 20th year with Leeds G&S, which you ll agree is impossible to believe, given her youthful good looks (she writes). When not stage-managing Fred Graham s somewhat ropey production of Shrew! she can be found working in communications for the NHS, whilst singing show tunes to herself. PHILIP CASE (Paul) Having joined Leeds G&S 8 years ago, Phillip has enjoyed a number of varied principal roles including the child narrator in Into the Woods and Strephon in Iolanthe. He has also used his day time job in decorating and property maintenance to help build sets and props for many past productions. NICKY BURROWS (Lois Lane / Bianca) Nicky has been performing since she was 3 months old, when she was carried as a prostitute s baby! At 16 she took a BTEC in Performing Arts, but after a slight change of plan at 18, went to Harper Adams Agricultural College. She now lives on and runs the family farm in Leeds, producing horses, looking after sheep and running her own pony party business Smarty Party Ponies. This is Nicky s 2nd production with Leeds G&S, she played Phyllis in Iolanthe in Other previous roles include Sarah Brown, Guys and Dolls (LAOS), Mabel, Pirates of Penzance (Ilkley Amateurs), Adina, L Elisir d Amore (York Opera). Nicky is really looking forward to playing Lois/Bianca SCOTT PENN (Bill Calhoun / Lucentio) Scott joined the society in 2013 to play Samuel in Pirates. Since then he s specialised in good-time gods, perfect poets and awkward adolescents, playing Mars in Orpheus, Grosvenor in Patience, Chip in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Arpad in She Loves Me. When not on stage, Scott is a digital and social media Jedi Master #fact PAGE SPONSORED BY JUDITH SMITH

7 REBECCA JELBERT (Lilli Vanessi / Katherine) Originally from Cornwall, Rebecca has been performing with Leeds theatre groups since 2015 where (in contrast to her own calm and demure personality she is sure) she has been repeatedly cast in the high-spirited, and slightly unhinged, character role. Lilli Vanessi is no exception and Rebecca looks forward to her first show with Leeds G&S Society and to singing the highest notes she s ever had to sing in public. JASON WEIGHTMAN (Fred Graham / Petruchio) Originally from deepest, darkest Liverpool, Jason has been performing on stage since he was 9 years old (which is quite a long time ago now). Since finding himself in sunny Yorkshire in 2013 which is a long story and involves blancmange, Jason has performed in several productions with Leeds G&S Society including The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, Orpheus in the Underworld, Into the Woods, The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee and most recently in She Loves Me. Ever the shy retiring type, Jason is looking forward to flexing some Shakespearian muscle in the demanding role of Fred/Petruchio MATTHEW OGLESBY (Hortensio) Matthew started singing in 1995 at Blackburn Cathedral, moving to and staying in Leeds from 2005 to further his studies. This is his twelfth production with the society; unable to decide if he is an old man (The Duke in Patience, Maraczeck in She Loves Me) or a teenager (Jack in Into The Woods). For work, Matthew writes music and flies across the western world selling graphic novels about the post-apocalypse. ANDREW ASPLAND (Gremio) Andrew began his stage career with a rendition of the Knife Grinder in Oliver! He was later cast as the Major General in Pirates of Penzance. With Pish-Tush, The Colonel, The Carpenter and Old Adam he made his mark on Leeds G&S before taking a back seat in the chorus of Harrogate G&S. He is delighted to be back in Leeds and looking forward to the dance tunes of Cole Porter. RICHARD PASCOE (Harry Trevor/ Baptista Minola) Day-to-day Richard runs a small company that leads advanced presentation skills training. He has giggled his way through the last twelve Leeds G&S shows. His personal favourite was Into The Woods (Sondheim), acting as Musical Director and playing The Baker.

8 SARAH CASE (First Gangster) Sarah has performed on stage since the age of 14 where she played the neighbour in Andy Capp The Musical in Dronfield. She has been a member of Leeds G&S for 11 years and as such has been privileged to play many leading roles including Princess Ida in Princess Ida, Yum Yum in the Mikado, and Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance. She has also been lucky enough to be artistic director of their autumn productions for the past 4 years and is writing and directing their next show in October. MATT STIRK (Second Gangster) This year marks Matt s 25th year a member of G&S and his 19th production with this company. Matt has also performed with LIDOS playing Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors and Ste in Supertown which was performed as part of the Edinburgh Festival as well as having it s debut here at the Carriageworks. Matt is also Deputy Stage Manager for Leeds Youth Opera, builds sets and somehow finds time to be Chairman of Leeds Civic Arts Guild. GRAEME LISTER (General Harrison Howell) Although Graeme has spent years trying to make an impact on (the) society, it came as a surprise for him to be Generally elevated.when not aspiring to the dizzy heights of a principal on stage, he is to be found climbing his surveyor s ladder during the week, or to the top of some mountain or other at weekends. 9 PLOT SYNOPSIS A COMPANY of actors come together to put the finishing touches to a new musical production of Shakespeare s The Taming of the Shrew. Fred Graham is the show s producer, director and leading man, playing opposite his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi, the movie star, who is now engaged to General Harrison Howell. Fred and Lilli still have a tempestuous relationship and Lilli is jealous of Fred who is pursuing his new young ingénue, Lois Lane. Lois s boyfriend Bill is a gambler and frequently misses rehearsals. He has racked up multiple debts and has just signed an IOU in Fred s name for $10,000. Backstage, Lilli shows off her engagement ring and reminds Fred it is the anniversary of their divorce. They end up reminiscing about the shows they did together when they first met, and it is obvious that both still have feelings for each other. Two sinister gangsters show up to demand the $10,000 from Fred who doesn t understand what they are talking about. They agree to come back after the show but warn him they ll be watching. Flowers are mistakenly delivered to Lilli s dressing room from Fred who tries to stop her reading the card which reveals they were actually intended for Lois. Lilli says she will read the card later onstage. As the performance begins we see the beginning of the musical as Petruchio (Fred) wants to marry Kate (Lilli) but she has no intention of getting married. Despite his efforts to woo her, she refuses. During the performance, Lilli reads the card and realises that the flowers were not intended for her, so plays her role of Kate with added realism and violence. Off-stage she threatens to leave the show, but Fred and the gangsters force her to stay so he can pay off the $10,000 gambling debt. As the show continues on-stage we see Petruchio and Kate s wedding, with the gangsters now in place to make sure that Lilli doesn t leave the stage much to the bemusement of the rest of the cast. The second act opens during the interval of Shrew!, as the cast escape to the roof in the stifling heat. As the play then continues, Petruchio attempts to tame Kate on-stage whilst backstage Lilli s fiancé General Howell, has arrived to take her away. Lois recognises him as a past lover, and Bill reacts badly, but Lois tells him that she will always be true to him in her fashion. Lilli leaves the theatre, leaving Fred bereft. Meanwhile, the gangsters find out that their boss has been killed so the IOU is no longer valid. They are caught on-stage in costume and deliver a rousing tribute to Shakespeare in their own special way. The conclusion of the play then takes place at the wedding of Bianca and Lucentio, but how can it end without Kate? PAGE SPONSORED BY JOHN HAYWOOD

This one is strictly for woman-haters and beef-lovers. The Waldorf Astoria s Men s Bar, at the sign of the Bull and the Bear, is now going in for masculine dinner from 6 to 9 each night, and women and thin slices of beef are rejected from the room with equal disdain. The menu is what the Waldorf calls limited but substantial, a phrase which seems to cover the following line-up: appetizers, oysters, clams, crabmeat Louis; soup, oniof! or green turtle with sherry; entrees, mixed grill, Blue Ribbon broiled steaks, or prime ribs of beef from the Roast Beef Cart (a la Simpson s in the Strand, of London). Even the desserts are he-man style, headed by juicy apple, pumpkin and mince pie. After this, nothing remains but to have the captain call your car, while two waiters hoist you up and carry you, full and contented, to the door.
