3 Author's Notes 'Play Somethin' We All Knows' is not based on any true experiences or any real people. The names used are indeed family names from the area but only used to heighten the play's local authenticity. The play is made up of original and traditional music. I wrote the songs Sweet Bonaventure, Rider Hill, and 1/11 's The Sunshine while my brother Don Walsh and I cowrote Sunny Afternoons. I first heard As Soon As The War Is 0 'er from the singing of Harry Hibbs, the less than credited Newfoundland accordion player and singer; l first heard Sweet Forget Me Not sung by the wonderful singer Gerald Campbell of Branch, St. Mary's Bay, and it was this version that Eddie Coffey heard and subsequently recorded; The Banks ofnewfoundland was first brought to my attention while listening to a rough mix of the terrific new Tickle Harbour album 'Battery Included' and it is to that same group I thank for the version heard here; the instrumental pieces are Newfoundland dance tunes from the playing of the brilliant Newfoundland accordionists Baxter Wareham of Harbour Buffet, Placentia Bay and Frank M!lher of St. John's. The preshow/intermission music is from the playing of the groups Arcady, Snotty Var, Seamus Begley and Stephen Cooney, and Matt Cranitch. I'd like to thank Don Walsh for ing me the chords and lyrics for The Banks of Newfoundland; Eleanor Dawson for ing me the lyrics for Sweet Forget Me Not; Rocky and Dora Johnson for their bar and Frieda Coleman and Betty Johnson for letting us in early; Kevin Toope for various props from his fishing stage; Rising Tide box-office staff; Donna Butt for going along with the idea in the first place; Lois Brown for jumping on board; Zipporah Peddle for the harmonies; and as always the Rising Tide cast and technical crew for their sense of place and purpose, their never-ending dedication and lastly, their warmth and friendship, making any unnerving task that much easier. Des Walsh Hog's Nose, Trinity. ;
