1 Wednesday, April 12 through Friday, May 26, 2017 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS MUSICAL THEATER PERFORMANCE AND AUDITIONING: AGES 8-13 Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages 8-13 Thursdays, pm Join us for a unique class that will improve your skills as a musical theater singer and actor! This class will cultivate your performance abilities by breaking down how to act a song, how to better communicate a character through the given lyrics and music, how to use your full body when performing a song, and much more. You will receive individual feedback as well as group coaching in order to become more well-rounded musical theater performers. (Please note: this is not a repeat of the class offered in 2016; it will be the same format, but we encourage anyone who has already taken it to participate again!) MUSICAL THEATER PERFORMANCE AND AUDITIONING: AGES (Parts 1 and 2) Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages Saturdays, 9:00am-12:00pm This class will give you great experience in performing songs from all types of musicals. You will learn and perform one song a week and gain valuable individual feedback about ways to improve your vocal and acting performance. You will also learn from watching your peers perform and receive coaching. This class is being offered in two parts: Part 1 will be Saturday, April 15, 22, and 29; and Part 2 will be Saturday, May 6, 13, and 20. You may sign up for any combination of parts: 1 only, 2 only, or both (see prices for more details). Part 2 will be a continuation of Part 1, so the material will not be repeated. We recommend taking both parts, so you receive all 6 weeks of training! (Please note: this is not a repeat of the class offered in 2016; it will be the same format, but we encourage anyone who has already taken it to participate again!) THE PRODUCTION TABLE: The Mechanics of Making Magic Taught by Cailey McCandless, Parthy McCandless, Stephen McCandless, Sue Quackenbush Ages Mondays, pm This class is designed to give you exposure to the roles of several important Creative Team members: the Director, Choreographer, Producer/Artistic Director, Costume Designer, Set Designer, and Stage Manager. Each class will focus on one of the above positions and will involve both explanation/discussion of the function of the role, as well as hands-on activities, exercises, and projects to give you tangible experience on the subjects. We ask that you be open to trying and learning new things and have some level of interest in each subject being covered. 1

2 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS MUSICAL THEATER DANCE FOR AGES 8-13 Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages 8-13 Wednesdays and Fridays, pm This class is a great opportunity for our younger performers to receive focused attention on improving their dance abilities. A variety of dance styles will be covered in this class, so you ll gain exposure to new types of dance, as well as improve on your current abilities. MUSICAL THEATER DANCE FOR AGES Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages Wednesdays and Fridays, pm This class will focus on the fundamentals of dance and their application to musical theater. By using music from an assortment of famous Broadway musicals, you will gain greater understanding of musicality, coordination, technique, terminology, and strength as they relate to dance. BEGINNING TAP Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages Wednesdays, pm This class is tailored to brand-new and beginning tappers no previous tap training required! We will be covering the fundamentals of tap, as well as combining these into basic combinations and choreography. This class will focus on Broadway-style tap dancing. *Tap shoes are not required for participation* INTERMEDIATE TAP Taught by Andrea Hochkeppel; ages Fridays, pm This class will be suited for intermediate tappers 1-2 years of previous tap experience is preferred. The course will expand upon the basics into more complex rhythm patterns and choreography, and it will focus on both Broadway-style and rhythm tap. *Tap shoes required* ADVANCED TAP Taught by Cailey McCandless; by permission only Mondays, pm This class is for tappers with significant previous tap training. Emphasis will be on both rhythm tap and Broadway tap, and classes will include exercises and choreography that challenge tappers to improve precision, skills, rhythmic understanding, and choreography retention and execution. 3+ years of tap experience is preferable, and tappers must have permission from Cailey to take this class. *Tap shoes required. cailey@craterian.org for permission* 2

3 INSTRUCTOR BIOS ANDREA HOCHKEPPEL Musical Theater Performance for 8-13 and 14-19, Dance for 813 and 14-19, Beginning and Intermediate Tap Andrea is a proud Actors Equity member and has performed around the country and around the world as a musical theater performer. Most recently, she starred as Nemo in Walt Disney World s Finding Nemo: The Musical. Other credits include: Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (Featured Singer; Brilliance of the Seas), Theatreworks USA s tour of Junie B. Jones the Musical (Junie B. Jones), Next Stage Repertory (The Odd Couple, All in the Timing). Andrea directed TMTO s 2017 production of The Will Rogers Follies, and she directed and choreographed TMTO s Miracle on 34th Street in Andrea holds a BA in Theater with a Musical Theater Certificate and Dance Minor from Northwestern University. Andrea teaches private voice, musical theater, and acting lessons for all ages; CAILEY MCCANDLESS Advanced Tap, The Production Table: Choreography, Stage Management Cailey is the Program Manager for TMTO, and she will be directing and choreographing TMTO s upcoming production of the musical Hairspray. She has been choreographing musical theater for 12 years and has choreographed 22 shows for TMTO, in addition to working with most other local theater companies in the Valley. Cailey received a BA in Theater with emphases in Stage Management and Musical Theater Choreography as well as a Dance minor from Northwestern University. Cailey has worked for Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney World, Northwestern University, and other organizations around the country. 3

4 INSTRUCTOR BIOS PARTHY MCCANDLESS The Production Table: Directing Parthy earned her BA in Communications at Stanford University. She and her husband David ran a theater troupe for teens in St. Paul, MN for a number of years, where Parthy codirected several productions. She directed TMTO s winter 2015 production of White Christmas, and she taught acting classes for TMTO in November Parthy will be directing Next Stage Repertory s upcoming production of Next to Normal this September. STEPHEN MCCANDLESS The Production Table: Producing/Artistic Directing, Set Construction Stephen has nearly 40 years of management experience in the for-profit and not-for-profit performing arts industries and is the founding executive director of Craterian Performances. He has worked as a director, production manager, technical director, master carpenter, lighting designer, sound engineer, props master, and stage manager; he is the artistic director and producer of Teen Musical Theater of Oregon. SUE QUACKENBUSH The Production Table: Costume Construction Sue has been designing costumes professionally since She has worked with every high school in the Rogue Valley, from Ashland High to Eagle Point, and loves working with teens. Sue has been TMTO s resident costume designer since

8 CLASS EXPECTATIONS AND POLICIES While this is our first official season of class offerings from TMTO, we intend to run our classes similarly to our rehearsal processes: efficiently, professionally, and with a spirit of fun! We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to our behavior policies and class expectations. The use of alcohol, drugs, or smoking is prohibited. Violations will result in dismissal from the program. Be respectful of your instructors and fellow classmates. In order to learn, we must try new things and risk being vulnerable. Our classes are safe places to grow as artists! Disruptive and/or disrespectful behavior is grounds for dismissal from the class. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Be mindful of other s personal space, as well as our class space. Please clean up after yourself. Be aware of your language and conversation topics, especially around our younger students. Remain at the class location for the duration of your session, unless otherwise specified by the Instructor. Bring snacks/water with you, as you will not be able to leave to get food. While in class, please stay focused and keep talking to a minimum we want you to have fun with your friends, but we also want to make good progress! Cell phones must be turned off during class. Classes will not be open for parents to watch, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Thank you in advance for understanding. Refunds will only be offered if the class must be canceled due to lack of registrants. Makeup classes will not be offered due to illness or emergencies. 8
