1 Homeland by Bo Bartlett 90th anniversary season
2 90th anniversary season at the end of 1926, colorado springs was a bustling city with aspirations to world-class culture. affectionately known as little london, it was renowned for its palatial resort hotels, polo clubs, and beautiful tree-lined streets. the cheyenne mountain zoo was a brandnew sensation, and city luminaries were busy planning more amenities to attract visitors from around the globe starting with an airport, an art school, and a professional orchestra. the colorado springs symphony held its first concert in january it drew wild enthusiasm from every corner of the community, regarded as a sign that this frontier town would soon be a byword for the best of american fine culture. throughout a century of war, social upheaval, and economic uncertainty, the symphony continued to expand its global outlook, bringing ever more skilled musicians to build lives at the foot of america s mountain. conscious of the city s trust, they maintained the faith shared by every performer and listener: that music can be the genesis of unity, beauty, and hope for the future of an entire community. nine decades later, we are the proud stewards of that trust. 3 america the beautiful premieres Majestic Pikes Peak, known to the world as America s Mountain, has inspired composers for over a century, beginning in 1893 with a Colorado College English professor named Katharine Lee Bates. Her iconic poem, and later patriotic song, America the Beautiful, has become a touchstone for Colorado Springs, defining our city s history and aspirations in terms of inspiring music and community spirit. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic is delighted to continue this tradition by commissioning new works from contemporary American composers inspired by Pikes Peak. Throughout the Philharmonic s 90th Anniversary Concert Season, watch for the world premieres of six interpretations on the theme of America the Beautiful, presented at select Masterworks concerts. 8 al and leigh buettner vanguard performances multimedia concerts with in-depth historical narration Tchaikovsky: Francesca da Rimini October 15, 2016 written by Thomas Wilson Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta Appraised by Dante and Virgil by Ary Scheffer Based on a real story of romance and revenge from the Renaissance, the tragic love of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini was immortalized in Dante s Inferno. His portrayal proved so powerful that 500 years later, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky chose it as his text for a breathless symphonic poem. Composed in just three weeks, his fantasia combines all the manic energy of Liszt with the fury of Wagner, brilliantly evoking the torment of lovers haunted by the memory of illicit pleasure. Isenheim Altarpiece (detail) by Matthias Grünewald Hindemith: Mathis der Maler March 11, 2017 written and conducted by Thomas Wilson Paul Hindemith s operatic tribute to the medieval painter Matthias Grünewald contains a story within a story. First performed in Berlin in 1934, the piece was labeled degenerate by the Nazi government perhaps because the plot centers on the painter s resolve to serve art above politics. Its turbulent themes and orchestration make this one of the most complex pieces in the classical repertoire. Dvořák: New World Symphony A Beyond the Score TM presentation April 15, 2017 Among the most popular symphonic works of all time, Dvořák s 9th symphony is richly layered with the musical traditions of America. Dvořák was especially adept at turning folk melodies into grand classical themes, and his stirring treatments of African- American spirituals and Native American motifs were instantly recognized as a national treasure. subscribe and save today!
