1 October Proudly supporting the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Letter from the President: Greetings! The Philharmonic s 90th Anniversary season is well underway and is proving to be every bit as exciting as promised. Opening weekend was nothing short of thrilling- opening with the first of six world premieres commissioned by the Philharmonic and inspired by America the Beautiful. Composer, Anthony DiLorenzo did not disappoint. His composition was brilliant and uplifting. Pianist Charlie Allbright brought Gershwin s Piano Concerto in F Major to life, while our Maestro and the Orchestra reminded us why we all love and crave Tchaikovsky. The following weekend, Pops fans were treated to the music of one of the greatest contemporary composers of all time-sir Paul McCartney. And so fitting that McCartney s music was the first shared through the brand new sound system in the Pikes Peak Center. Philharmonic concert goers have much to be thankful for. Not the least of which is the upcoming performance of Yo-Yo Ma in February. Yo-Yo Ma tickets are currently only available to season ticket holders, so if you do not yet have your season tickets, now would be the perfect time to get them so you don t miss Yo Yo!) As you will see on the following pages, planning for the Bavarian Christmas Dinner and Auction is underway. After a year s absence last year when we held the Oktoberfest instead, we are returning to the magnificent Briarhurst Manor Inn for this year s event. As you know, it is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we rely on all of you to participate by providing us with a minimum of one item for our silent or live auction. We need gifts and gift certificates of all kinds-restaurant, spa, golf, boutique, tickets, almost anything will sell. Donation forms and letters are available by contacting our auction chair, Patti Layman at ppatane59@msn.com, or guild.philharmonic@gmail.com or by phone at (719) We are also in need of volunteers to provide backstage hospitality during Masterworks concerts. Please contact Annabel Widney at awidney@mac.com or (719) for more information or to sign up to volunteer. We hope to see you all throughout this fabulous season at our membership meetings, fundraising events and at the Pikes Peak Center. Most sincerely, Roslyn Block, President In this issue: Upcoming Guild Events Upcoming Philharmonic Events Bavarian Christmas Dinner Peachy Party Update Philharmonic s Newest Member Honoring Gundi Message From the Philharmonic Welcome New Members Treasurer s Report Next Membership Meeting Philharmonic Guild Leadership October

3 PEACH POWER! The Philharmonic Guild fundraiser of selling Colorado Western Slope peaches continues to be a winner, thanks to you all. Talk about a popular fruit! People are starting to ask as early as May if it is time to order peaches yet. The Peachy Party was started 2006 and has grown in popularity, success and net revenue. This year was our best year ever, with 408 boxes sold and net sales over $4,500! All sales were done by word of mouth or online, eliminating the expense of direct mail. Many thanks go to: Jim Jackson and crew at the Millibo Art Theatre for their generous offering of their venue for our event (year #4); all of the volunteers that handled unloading the truck in the morning, as well as check-in, box distribution and serving daiquiris; and our wonderful musicians that kept us entertained on-stage, namely Kerry Lane with sons Jory and Cooper and Jorrin Powell. And we thank all of you for your ongoing patronage and look forward to 2017! SUPERB SEPTEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING! Our thanks to Hope and Joe Mena for hosting our September membership meeting. What a way to launch the -17 season! Their unique southwest home and spectacular gardens was the perfect backdrop for our first get together of the year. We had a great turnout including seven guests who joined our membership that day. A short business meeting was followed by a wonderful program put together by Philharmonic musicians, Cynthia Robinson, Jeremy Van Hoy and Sergei Vassiliev who played excerpts from the entire th Anniversary Season. Following the program, members and guests were invited to tour the home and gardens and enjoyed a delicious lunch in the courtyard catered by the Picnic Basket, compliments of the Menas. Hope and Joe-we can t thank you enough for your generositythis will certainly be a highlight of our year! Guild Members and Volunteers at Peachy Party Photos Clockwise: Hope Shows Off Her Art, Meeting Time at the Menas, Lunch On The Patio WELCOMING ÈRIC! The Guild welcomes the newest member of the Philharmonic family: Èric Caballé Sabate, born August 18,. We can t wait to meet you! Congratulations to Josep, Monica and Marc! HONORING GUNDI Gundi Brunson has been a member of the Guild every year since joining the Colorado Springs Symphony Guild in She served as president of the Guild in Gundi continues to be an ardent supporter of the organization and of the Philharmonic. Sadly, a number of years ago, Gundi was inflicted with an illness that has kept her constantly in her home. Yet she continues her support by renewing her membership year after year. Last year, she donated table covers, steins and decorations for the Bavarian Oktoberfest. She even taught Lars the Bavarian drinking song (which thankfully he did not have to perform because the band knew it). The Guild thanks Gundi for her ongoing support and wishes her continued recovery in the hope that she will one day be able to rejoin us in person. GUILD APPRECIATION TEA On August 9, the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association board of directors and the Tiemens Foundation hosted an appreciation tea to thank Guild members for all the years we have supported the Youth Symphony Solo Competition through our scholarship program. The tea was held on a lovely summer afternoon on the beautiful wraparound porch at the Old North End home of Dave and Paula Munger. We thank the Mungers and the Youth Symphony board for recognizing and honoring our members. Jeremy, Cynthia and Sergei perform at the September membership meeting 4 April October
