Editor: Lisa lwaki gmail.com MTAC OCC NEWSLETTER April 2014 from Pamela Worcester PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Congratulations on surviving the CM theory and piano evaluations!!! Anne Prestridge deserves a million thanks for all of her amazing work! I also want to thank her fabulous CM team for their terrific job: Marina Sakach, Keiko Ikeda, Susan Parr, Anne Dugaw, and Josie Sun. Of course, I cannot forget to thank these two incredible teachers: Gloria Traulle and Kathleen Martin. They make the CM String and Voice evaluations look so easy each year! Lastly, thanks go to all the branch members that worked to make this another successful year! Please plan to attend our Wednesday, April 9 th Branch Meeting. Chizuko Asada will be the featured presenter. She will speak about playing the piano with natural technique. Chi is a faculty member at CSULB and a frequent adjudicator at our branch festivals and concerto competition. In addition to hearing Chi s words of wisdom, come vote for your new board. Please see the slate of officers in this newsletter that our wonderful Nominating Committee (Nancy Lau, Nilou Sarraf, Ana de Vries) selected. The Jenkins Report: Judy Jenkins is doing much better and is thankful for all of the good vibes we ve been sending her way. Her husband, Tom, recently had heart surgery. Please keep him in your prayers too. I m sure any cards or letters you would like to send them will also be greatly appreciated. We love you Tom & Judy!!! On Sunday, April 13 th at 3 PM Umi Garrett will be giving a piano recital at the Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more info. As you might recall, the MTAC OCC Branch sponsored her several years ago because we wanted to help start her career as a solo artist. In appreciation of our efforts, the net proceeds of this concert will be donated to our branch with the hope that we can continue to sponsor other phenomenal young talent. Just a reminder there are many important MTAC events fast approaching. Please register your students (if eligible) for the Contemporary Music Festival, Composers Today Recital, Senior Recital, Chamber Ensemble Recital, Showcase Recital, Community Service Recitals, and maybe even the CM Honors Recital or Convention Recitals. Happy Spring everyone! See you soon. ~Pam

3 BRANCH MEETING PREVIEW 3 Wednesday, April 9 th at 10AM Heritage Room, Laguna Hills Community Center Presentation on Natural Technique by Chizuko Asada Have your students ever complained their arms get tired after playing the fast piece many times? Have your student ever asked why they didn t get medals even if judges only write positive comments? Have your students ever wondered why they are criticized they are banging while the world famous pianists play very loud? Have your student ever wondered why people complain that their tone is too thin and shallow when they are told to play very softly? Piano technique is one of the hardest topics, because a lot of the technical motions in piano playing are done invisibly inside of the body. I believe in the natural technique, which is based on the gravity. I would like to share my ideas on how to teach young students by making the invisible motions more visible using the kids languages and imagination. Chizuko Asada, Biography Chizuko Asada, after studying piano in Japan, earned Master in Music at California State University, Long Beach. While studying at CSULB, she won the Fine Arts Affiliates Scholarships as well as the University Concerto Competition and became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda. She has been teaching as a piano faculty member at Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSULB since 1995 as well as maintaining an extensive private piano studio in Irvine. She has served as adjudicator for various competitive events in Southern California, and coaches for Junior Chamber Music. Her students have received numerous awards in various competitions. She is a founder and artistic director of Hoson Music Series at her newly opened recital house in Tustin.
