2 Directors Concert CYNTHIA MILLER FREIVOGEL violin FRANK NOWELL harpsichord WITH SANDRA MILLER viola da gamba SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 2012 AT 5:00 PM Wellshire Presbyterian Church 2999 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver Our season is all about passion...in more than one sense of the word! The composer Rameau asserted that the purpose of music was to arouse in us diverse passions. Our season encompasses a wide range of human experience - from lust, honor and justice in La Susanna; to illusion, humor and romance in Don Quixote. We are honored this season to share with Colorado audiences our own interpretation of J.S. Bach s deeply moving St. Matthew Passion. I am also thrilled to enter into a unique collaboration with Ballet Nouveau Colorado as we explore together the provocative emotional intersection between Baroque music and contemporary dance. Please join us in a season of Baroque passions, with exceptional music by Vivaldi, Tartini, Stradella, Bach, Handel and Telemann! Frank Nowell, Artistic Director Music s aim is to please, and to arouse in us diverse passions. Jean-Philippe Rameau To launch our eighth season, BCOC s artistic leaders present an evening of intimate Baroque music and informal conversation. In an annual summer event that has become an audience favorite, Cynthia Miller Freivogel and Frank Nowell perform some of their favorite chamber music this year to include J.S. Bach s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, solo fantasias by Telemann, and sonatas by Bach and by Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre one of the few famous women composers in the Baroque era. Freivogel draws a rich range of tonal colors from her violin and brings freshness, verve and a wonderfully natural sense of phrasing to her playing. It also helps that she seems so at home in this music. Denver Post 17th Century Treasures: La Susanna TEKLA CUNNINGHAM violinist-leader LAURA HEIMES soprano (Susanna) ABIGAIL CHAPMAN soprano (Daniel) DANIEL HUTCHINGS, PETER BECKER tenor and bass (Judges) MARJORIE BUNDAY alto (Narrator) SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2012 AT 7:30 PM First Congregational Church 1128 Pine St., Boulder SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2012 AT 3:00 PM St. Paul Lutheran Church 1600 Grant St., Denver The earthy tale of the beautiful and betrayed Susanna, heroine of masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, and Picasso, is brought to musical life in this astonishing oratorio by Alessandro Stradella. Soprano Laura Heimes shines in the title role, as we continue our ongoing exploration of rarely performed gems of the 1600 s. photo: Denver Post The soprano of Laura Heimes as Susanna was balm to the ears. Her tones were perfectly floated over the ensemble a Susanna of beauty indeed. Miami Herald

Hampden Ave., Cherry Hills Village A profound musical monument that continues to move listeners in the 21st century, Johann Sebastian Bach s St. Matthew Passion is unparalleled in its dramatic sweep and poignancy, probing the depths of human emotion and spiritual contemplation. Superb adult and children s choruses and soloists join an expanded BCOC ensemble for a widely anticipated period-instrument performance of a beloved masterwork. Tenor Aaron Sheehan was ideal, clear and polished, elegantly declaiming the wide-ranging but dramatically restrained recitatives with quiet intensity. Boston Globe Stephen Stubbs s direction was as lively and spontane- ous as it was meticulous in detail. BCOC performs a varied repertoire, ranging from familiar Baroque favorites to rarely performed gems from the period, including an ongoing series entitled 17th-Century Treasures. Named Ensemble of the Year 2010 by the Denver Post, the orchestra is led from within the ensemble by violinist Cynthia Miller Freivogel and harpsichordist Frank Nowell. The ensemble s first CD recording, Cornucopia, was released in 2010, featuring music of Handel, Telemann, Muffat, Avison and Leclair. photo: Brooks Bond Educational Outreach In addition to our concert series, BCOC is able to introduce adults and young people to baroque music through our educational outreach programs. Our youth outreach program focuses on introducing Baroque repertoire and performance style to students from age 8 to 18. It includes innovative partnerships with Boulder Suzuki Strings and the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO). No group has done more in the past five years to freshen and energize Denver s classical-music scene than the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado. Denver Post Our programs for building the audience of the future include rehearsal demonstrations, in which fourth and fifth-grade students from urban schools observe a BCOC rehearsal often for students who otherwise have no exposure to classical music. photo: Brooks Bond
