1 Hartt School Community Division Bass Audition Teacher Resource Packet The following listings are meant as guides to help teachers who have students auditioning for a Hartt Community Division ensemble. Teachers may use these to better understand the general musical and technical skill levels expected for each ensemble. Auditions each year determine student placement, which is dependent on the given pool of applicants, their related skills, and the specific number of instrumentalists needed for each ensemble.
2 Scales: 1 octave D major scale in half notes. Stringendo Directed by David Kramer Saturday from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. Prepared solo: Students should play a solo piece of their choosing. Students should demonstrate correct posture, the ability to play in tune, dynamics, and a beautiful tone. Students should be comfortable reading in the keys of C, G and D Major and accidentals. Students should be comfortable reading in the time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4. Students should be comfortable reading whole, half, quartet, and eighth note rhythms.
3 Sinfonia Directed by Mickey Reisman Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. Scales: F & G major 2 octaves. Student should use appropriate bow distribution and have a good bow hold. Student should be able to apply slurs where appropriate. Student should perform prepared pieces with a high level of musicianship. Student should be comfortable playing through fourth position. (i.e. dynamic contrast, excellent tone, clear understanding of the piece) Examples of repertoire: (these pieces are not required and are only meant to provide students with a suggestion for music that requires the level expected for this ensemble) March in G (Bach) Student should be comfortable reading music using the following time signatures: 2/2, 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 Student should be comfortable reading music using the following key signatures: A Major, D Major, G Major, C Major, F Major, Bb Major, Eb Major F# Minor, B Minor, E Minor, A Minor, D Minor, G Minor, C Minor Student should be comfortable reading music using quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note triplets. Student should be able to apply slurs where appropriate. Students should be prepared to sight read music containing the following rhythms at the audition:
4 Vivace Orchestra (Suzuki Students Only) Directed by Emmett Drake Saturday from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. Scales: F & G Major, 2 octaves March in G, Bach (Suzuki Bk. 2) Student should be comfortable reading music using the following time signatures: 2/2, 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, 9/8, 3/8 Student should be comfortable reading music using the following key signatures: A Major, D Major, G Major, C Major, F Major, Bb Major, Eb Major F# Minor, B Minor, E Minor, A Minor, D Minor, G Minor, C Minor Student should be comfortable reading music using quarter note, eighth note, and sixteenth note triplets. Student should be able to apply slurs where appropriate. Students should be comfortable reading through fourth position. 5 Opus 89 Directed by Emmett Drake Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Scales: F & G & A major scales 2 octaves. All other major scales 1 octave. Arpeggios are suggested, but not required. Examples of repertoire: (these pieces are not required and are only meant to provide students with a suggestion for music that requires the level expected for this ensemble) Any Sonata by Vivaldi or Marcello, movements 1 & 2 Student should use appropriate bow distribution and have a good bow hold. Student should be able to apply slurs where appropriate. Student should perform prepared pieces with a high level of musicianship. (i.e. dynamic contrast, excellent tone, clear understanding of the piece) Sight Student should be comfortable reading music using the following time signatures: 2/2, 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 5/4, 6/4, 7/8, 3/8 Student should be comfortable reading music that changes time signatures often. Student should be comfortable reading music using all key signatures: Student should be comfortable reading complex rhythms.
6 Connecticut Youth Symphony Directed by Dan D Addio Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Scales: All Major and Minor Scales and Arpeggios 2 octaves. Student should perform a prepared work (such as a movement from a concerto or a Sonata) that demonstrates a high level of musicianship and technical ability. Examples of repertoire: (these pieces are not required and are only meant to provide students with a suggestion for music that requires the level expected for this ensemble) Cappuzzi, Concerto for Bass, 1 st movement. Student should be comfortable reading music using any time signatures. Student should be comfortable reading music that changes time signatures often. Student should be comfortable reading music using all key signatures. Student should be comfortable reading complex rhythms.
