2 WELCOME Welcome from Stephen Cleobury, Artistic Director, Easter at King s With its tenth anniversary season, Easter at King's comes of age as a festival of international repute, based upon King's College Choir, King's Chapel and the world-wide renown of the music-making in the College s Easter at King s takes up the mantle of previous festivals and goes on to new heights. A new feature is the presence of an Artist in Residence, and I am delighted that Andreas Scholl, who has recently been admitted to the College s 1441 Foundation, will be with us in this capacity. He not only sings the alto arias in the Matthew Passion, but gives what promises to be a memorable, not-to-be-missed recital on Maundy Thursday, in which he will be joined by his wife, the distinguished harpsichordist, Dr Tamar Halperin. Regular visitors return, notably The Academy of Ancient Music and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The College Choir continues to be a backbone of the Festival: in addition to singing the regular services, the Choir will perform the annual Bach Passion and Handel s ever-popular oratorio, Israel in Egypt. In another new departure, The King s Men (choral scholars) have a concert of their own on the Wednesday. We pay tribute to Sir John Tavener, who died last year, with a performance of The Protecting Veil on Good Friday, featuring as soloist the superb cellist and former King's chorister, Guy Johnston, alongside Passiontide repertoire by Witold Lutosławski and Karol Szymanowski. We have long been fortunate in the interest and support of former King's choral scholar, Robin Boyle, who, as Managing Director of Chester Music, acted as publisher for both Tavener and Lutosławski. With soloists from Poland, this concert will have a truly international feel, and, once again, BBC Radio 3 will broadcast the Good Friday concert. Easter at King s goes from strength to multi-faceted strength BBC Music Magazine 2013 Stephen Cleobury Artistic Director (Nick Rutter) Andreas Scholl Artist in Residence (James McMillan/Decca) 2 Box office: CALENDAR Tuesday 15 April 12.30pm Exploring the Passion (Talk*) 6.30pm Bach St Matthew Passion Wednesday 16 April 12.30pm In Conversation with Andreas Scholl (Talk*) 6.00pm A Tudor Passion Maundy Thursday 17 April 5.30pm Sung Eucharist and Stripping of the Altar 8.00pm Recital by Andreas Scholl and Friends 9.30pm Meditation for Maundy Thursday Good Friday 18 April 10.30am Ante-Communion and Veneration of the Cross 4.00pm Tribute to Sir John Tavener (Talk*) 5.30pm Choral Evensong 7.30pm Tavener The Protecting Veil Holy Saturday 19 April 5.00pm Pre-Concert Talk (Talk*) 7.00pm Handel Israel in Egypt Easter Day Sunday 20 April 10.30am Sung Eucharist with Procession 3.30pm Festal Evensong Easter Monday 21 April 4.00pm Organ Recital for Eastertide Priority postal booking until Thursday 30 January Booking in person opens Saturday 1 February Telephone booking opens Monday 3 February For details see page 15 * All talks will take place in King s College.
