2 andris nelsons and the bso For his fifth season with the orchestra, BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons leads fourteen of the year s twenty-six subscription programs, ranging from orchestral works by Haydn, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Copland to compelling concerto collaborations with acclaimed soloists, as well as world and American premieres of pieces newly commissioned by the BSO. Continuing his multi-season explorations of concert and operatic works in particular areas of interest, Maestro Nelsons programming includes Shostakovich s first and last symphonies, the First and Fifteenth, as part of the BSO s ongoing Shostakovich cycle for Deutsche Grammophon; Bruckner s Symphony No. 9; an all-strauss program featuring Renée Fleming in the heartfelt final scene of the opera Capriccio; and concert performances of Puccini s moving one-act opera Suor Angelica with Kristine Opolais and Violeta Urmana. Concerto collaborations include Rachmaninoff s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Daniil Trifonov, Schumann s Piano Concerto with Yuja Wang, Szymanowski s Violin Concerto No. 1 with Lisa Batiashvili, Viennese composer HK Gruber s Aerial for trumpet and orchestra with Håkan Hardenberger, and the world premiere featuring violinist Baiba Skride of American composer Sebastian Currier s Aether, which was co-commissioned by the BSO and the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig as part of the BSO/GHO Alliance initiated in February GUSTAVO DUDAMEL APRIL 5, 6, 9 & KRISTINE OPOLAIS FEB 21 & 23; FEB 28 & MARCH 1 2 JAMES CARTER MARCH 23 Additional commissions include the American premieres of Latvian composer Andris Dzenītis Māra and English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage s Remembering: In Memoriam Evan Scofield. This is one of several Harbison works this season celebrating the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston-based composer s 80th birthday year. The third movement is a setting of Urlicht, a poem from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Thursday, November 1 Friday, November 2 (Casual Friday) Saturday, November 3 Tuesday, November 6 HAYDN Symphony No. 93 Mark-Anthony TURNAGE Remembering: In Memoriam Evan Scofield (American premiere; BSO co-commission) (November 1, 3, 6) ELGAR Enigma Variations In this London-oriented program, Andris Nelsons leads the BSO in the American premiere of the first of several BSO co-commissions this season, English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage s Remembering: In Memoriam Evan Scofield. Evan, son of the great jazz guitarist and Turnage collaborator John Scofield, died of cancer at age twenty-five. The piece was co-commissioned by the BSO with the Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. Opening the program is Haydn s Symphony No. 93, one of the first he wrote for performance in London in the early 1790s. The English composer Edward Elgar s Enigma Variations is a series of widely varied portraits of his friends via transformations of a common musical theme. Thursday, November 8 Friday, November 9, 1:30pm Saturday, November 10 Tuesday, November 13 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 1 Andris DZENĪTIS Māra (American premiere; BSO co-commission) TCHAIKOVSKY The Nutcracker, Act II The BSO and Andris Nelsons give the American premiere of Latvian composer Andris Dzenītis s orchestral work Māra, a BSO co-commission with the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig. This is one of two works being performed by the BSO this season to mark the 100th anniversary of Latvian independence (declared November 18, 1918). Dzenītis calls his new work, which is dedicated to Andris Nelsons and takes its title from a goddess in Latvian mythology, the musical encoding of my personal understanding of what it means to be Latvian. Opening the program is Shostakovich s Symphony No. 1, to be recorded live as part of Andris Nelsons and the BSO s multi-season exploration of the composer s symphonies. Completing the program is Act II of Tchaikovsky s vibrant, beloved ballet score The Nutcracker. Thursday, November 15, 10:30am Thursday, November 15 Friday, November 16, 1:30pm Saturday, November 17 Håkan Hardenberger, trumpet HK GRUBER Aerial, Concerto for trumpet and orchestra MAHLER Symphony No. 5 Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger, a longtime collaborator of Andris Nelsons, returns to Symphony Hall as soloist in a concerto written for him, the Viennese composer HK Gruber s Aerial. Featuring piccolo trumpet and cow s horn as well as standard trumpet, the concerto makes full use of Hardenberger s considerable virtuosity and expressive range. Mahler composed his Fifth Symphony in His first completely instrumental symphony since No. 1, it marked a new, highly individual, and influential approach to writing for orchestra that would carry through the remainder of his symphonies. The Fifth includes the famous and moving Adagietto movement for strings and harp. Friday, November 23, 1:30pm Saturday, November 24 Tuesday, November 27 ALL-BEETHOVEN PROGRAM Symphony No. 4 Symphony No. 5 Beethoven often composed several major works at the same time, each a distinctly different expressive outlet. He began sketching his Fifth Symphony in 1804 but didn t complete it until four years later. The innovative construction of that piece and its unprecedented intensity are embodied in the opening four notes, the most famous theme in classical music. Between the Fifth s first sketches and its completion, Beethoven wrote some of his most lyrical music for the opera Leonore (which would become Fidelio) and the Fourth Symphony. The latter s consistent high spirits contrast starkly with the struggle against fate embodied in the Fifth. Thursday, November 29, 7:30pm Friday, November 30, 1:30pm Saturday, December 1, 7:30pm Carolyn Sampson, soprano Christine Rice, mezzo-soprano Sebastian Kohlhepp, tenor Andrè Schuen, baritone Tanglewood Festival Chorus, James Burton, conductor LEIPZIG WEEK IN BOSTON J.S. BACH Christmas Oratorio Assembled and composed for Leipzig s Christmas season, Bach s Christmas Oratorio is a celebration of the nativity of Jesus Christ originally performed over the course of six days beginning on Christmas Day As was often Bach s practice, he re-used music from several earlier works, including the independent secular cantatas nos In addition to chorus, the work features soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, as well as an orchestra configured differently for each of the six sections. The BSO hasn t performed this important work since Charles Munch conducted it in For these performances, Andris Nelsons and the orchestra are joined by an outstanding group of soloists and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

6 boston symphony orchestra season Concerts begin at 8pm unless otherwise noted. Open Rehearsals noted in light type. date conductor/soloist program notes Thursday, January 3 Friday, January 4, 1:30pm Saturday, January 5 Shi-Yeon Sung, conductor Ingrid Fliter, piano MENDELSSOHN-HENSEL Overture in C MENDELSSOHN Piano Concerto No. 1 DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 8 Returning to Symphony Hall for the first time since her tenure as BSO assistant conductor, Korean-born Shi- Yeon Sung leads a program juxtaposing music of Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and her brother Felix. Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel s Overture in C, her only extant work for orchestra alone, is an elegant ten-minute piece dating from Begun in the same year, her brother s Piano Concerto No. 1 has a turbulent, Romantic energy; Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter is soloist, making her subscription series debut. One of the great 19th-century symphonies, Dvořák s Eighth was composed in 1889 and is arguably his most individual symphony. Thursday, January 10, 10:30am Thursday, January 10 Friday, January 11 (Casual Friday) Saturday, January 12 Sir Andrew Davis, conductor Alessio Bax, piano John HARBISON Symphony No. 2 (January 10, 12) MOZART Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K.491 VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Symphony No. 5 English conductor Sir Andrew Davis and the BSO are joined by Italian pianist Alessio Bax in his BSO debut for one of Mozart s stormiest works, his C minor piano concerto, No. 24. Opening the concert is Pulitzer Prizewinning composer John Harbison s 1986 Symphony No. 2, the four movements of which are called Dawn, Daylight, Dusk, and Darkness keys to its evolving expressive and musical character. Steeped in the musical tradition of England, Vaughan Williams s Fifth Symphony was composed at the beginning of World War II but maintains an optimistic and affirmative outlook. Thursday, January 17 Friday, January 18, 1:30pm Saturday, January 19 Tuesday, January 22 Herbert Blomstedt, conductor Truls Mørk, cello HAYDN Cello Concerto No. 1 in C BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 Herbert Blomstedt, one of the great conductors of the era, returns to the BSO podium for a work central to the repertoire, Brahms s rich, complex Symphony No. 1. Bearing several allusions to Beethoven but fully Brahmsian in its spirit and effect, it stands as one of the great works in the symphonic literature. Opening the program is Haydn s charming, genial Cello Concerto No. 1, featuring the brilliant Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk in his first appearances with the BSO since Thursday, January 24 Friday, January 25, 1:30pm Saturday, January 26 Tuesday, January 29 John Storgårds, conductor Martin Helmchen, piano Kaija SAARIAHO Ciel d hiver MOZART Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat, K.482 SIBELIUS Symphony No. 6 SIBELIUS Symphony No. 7 Making his BSO subscription series debut, conductor John Storgårds leads pianist Martin Helmchen in Mozart s gregarious, large-scale Piano Concerto in E-flat, K.482. The Finnish Storgårds also brings three Finnish works to Symphony Hall, beginning with Kaija Saariaho s gorgeous study of orchestral color, Ciel d hiver ( Winter Sky ), an arrangement of a movement from her earlier, symphony-like Orion. Jean Sibelius s final two symphonies, nos. 6 and 7, are two of the greatest works in the symphonic literature. Though very different from one another, both demonstrate the composer s distinctively rich orchestration and organic, fluid transformations of material. Thursday, January 31 Friday, February 1, 1:30pm Saturday, February 2 Tuesday, February 5 Juanjo Mena, conductor Julian Rachlin, violin HAYDN Symphony No. 44, Trauer MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto JANÁČEK Suite from The Cunning Little Vixen JANÁČEK Sinfonietta The popular Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena collaborates with Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin in Mendelssohn s evergreen Violin Concerto, among the most charming works in the standard repertoire. Joseph Haydn s Symphony No. 44, Trauer ( Mourning ), is one of the composer s most serious and closely worked symphonies, written during a period of experimentation that saw the composer rapidly expanding the potential of the genre. Closing the program are two works from the 1920s by the great Czech composer Leoš Janáček: a suite of music from his folk-tale opera The Cunning Little Vixen and his brass-dominated Sinfonietta. Thursday, February 7, 10:30am Thursday, February 7 Friday, February 8, 1:30pm Saturday, February 9 Tuesday, February 12 Lisa Batiashvili, violin WILSON Lumina SZYMANOWSKI Violin Concerto No. 1 COPLAND Symphony No. 3 The Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili joins Andris Nelsons and the BSO as soloist in the important Polish composer Karol Szymanowski s Violin Concerto No. 1, a brilliant piece colored by both French Impressionism and German late Romanticism. American orchestral works open and close the concert. The St. Louis-born Olly Wilson, who died in March 2018, was a longtime faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. His well-traveled orchestral work Lumina is a scintillating, single-movement orchestral landscape. Aaron Copland s Symphony No. 3 is a substantial, expressively rich work incorporating the composer s familiar Fanfare for the Common Man as the theme of its final movement. Thursday, February 14* Friday, February 15, 1:30pm Saturday, February 16 *Sponsored by Commonwealth Worldwide Executive Transportation Yuja Wang, piano SCHUMANN Piano Concerto BRUCKNER Symphony No. 9 Andris Nelsons and the BSO are joined by the firebrand Chinese pianist Yuja Wang for Schumann s Piano Concerto, a work blending the composer s unique Romantic lyricism and brilliance. The concerto began as a single-movement Fantasia written for his wife Clara. Bruckner s magisterial Symphony No. 9 shows the continuing influence of Wagner in its harmonic language and scope, with the particular Austrian grace and gift for counterpoint for which Bruckner was known. Thursday, February 21 Saturday, February 23 Friday, February 22 (Casual Friday) Kristine Opolais, soprano (Sister Angelica) Violeta Urmana, mezzo-soprano (The Princess) Lorelei Ensemble, Beth Willer, Artistic Director Tanglewood Festival Chorus, James Burton, conductor Boston Symphony Children s Choir Lorelei Ensemble, Beth Willer, Artistic Director Boston Symphony Children s Choir BOULANGER D un Soir triste DEBUSSY Nocturnes PUCCINI Suor Angelica* *Sung in Italian with English supertitles BRITTEN Friday Afternoons, for children s chorus and orchestra BOULANGER D un Soir triste DEBUSSY Nocturnes Andris Nelsons and the BSO continue their recent tradition of performing opera in concert with Giacomo Puccini s Suor Angelica ( Sister Angelica ), one of his three short operas composed in the 1910s and known collectively as Il trittico ( Triptych ). The story centers on the title character, who is living in a convent to repent a past sin, having a son out of wedlock. Acclaimed soprano Kristine Opolais sings the role of Sister Angelica in this concert performance. Opening the program is a work almost contemporary with Puccini s, Lili Boulanger s short tone poem D un Soir triste ( A somber evening ), one of few purely orchestral works completed by this young genius before her untimely death in 1918 at age twenty-four. Also on the program is Debussy s immensely colorful Nocturnes, an 1899 masterpiece of musical Impressionism. Featuring the recently formed Boston Symphony Children s Choir in this performance, Benjamin Britten s choral cycle Friday Afternoons was written in for the boys of his brother s prep school. Very English, in some ways folksong-like, this children s piece has unexpected expressive and musical depths. The program continues with Lili Boulanger s short tone poem D un Soir triste ( A somber evening ), one of few purely orchestral works completed by this young genius before her untimely death in 1918 at age twenty-four, and concludes with Debussy s immensely colorful Nocturnes, an 1899 masterpiece of musical Impressionism.

Dvořák wrote the piece in in response to the deaths of three of his children, using the traditional Medieval Latin poem on the subject of Mary s sorrow over Christ s death. Dvořák s poignant and dramatic setting expresses a heartfelt, personal experience of grief via the four solo roles, and its universality through the power of the chorus and orchestra. The BSO has only performed this work in its entirety on two previous occasions. Thursday, March 7 Friday, March 8, 1:30pm Saturday, March 9 Thomas Adès, conductor Kirill Gerstein, piano LISZT Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Thomas ADÈS Piano Concerto (world premiere; BSO commission) TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 BSO Artistic Partner Thomas Adès returns for a concert featuring the world premiere of his own second piano concerto, commissioned by the BSO and composed for Kirill Gerstein, a frequent collaborator. Mr. Adès also leads the orchestra in two Romantic-era scores. Franz Liszt s Mephisto Waltz depicts a scene from Nicolaus Lenau s 1836 poem Faust. Tchaikovsky s emotionally intense and magnificently orchestrated Fourth Symphony, completed in 1878, represents the culmination of a traumatic period in the composer s life. Thursday, March 14 Friday, March 15* Saturday, March 16 *See special prices Renée Fleming, soprano ALL-STRAUSS PROGRAM Sextet, Moonlight Music, and Final Scene from Capriccio Also sprach Zarathustra The incomparable American soprano Renée Fleming returns to Symphony Hall to join Andris Nelsons and the BSO in the gorgeous and touching final scene from Richard Strauss s conversation piece for music, the opera Capriccio. The opera s opening Sextet for Strings and luminous Moonlight Music will precede the vocal scene. On the second half is the composer s Also sprach Zarathustra, his tone poem based on the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche s mystical meditation of the same name. The piece opens with a dramatic fanfare widely known from its use by Stanley Kubrick in the sound track of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Saturday, March 23 Thomas Wilkins, conductor James Carter, saxophones Adolphus HAILSTORK An American Port of Call Roberto SIERRA Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra PRICE Symphonic Reflections from Symphony No. 3 ELLINGTON A Tone Parallel to Harlem (Harlem Suite) Thomas Wilkins, the BSO s Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor, makes his subscription series debut with this concert, which features music of three African-American composers and Puerto Rico-born Robert Sierra. Sierra wrote his Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra for eminent jazz saxophonist James Carter, including opportunities for improvisation within his dynamic and soulful score. Also in the jazz spectrum is Duke Ellington s lush, impressionistic tone poem A Tone Parallel to Harlem. Florence Price graduated from Boston s New England Conservatory in 1906 as a pianist and organist; she also studied composition there. She wrote her Third Symphony in 1940 on a commission from the WPA; Thomas Wilkins has arranged sections of the four-movement work into a tone poem he calls Symphonic Reflections. The brash, optimistic concertopener An American Port of Call was written in 1985 for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra by Adolphus Hailstork, inspired by his bustling home city of Norfolk, VA, where he is a professor at Old Dominion University. Friday, April 5, 1:30pm Saturday, April 6 Tuesday, April 9 Gustavo Dudamel, conductor SCHUMANN Symphony No. 1, Spring STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring Gustavo Dudamel, the popular Venezuelan music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, makes his BSO subscription series debut with two weeks of concerts. This first program ushers in the change of season with two contrasting, spring-related works. Robert Schumann composed his Symphony No. 1, Spring, in 1841 with the encouragement of his new wife Clara. Igor Stravinsky s seminal ballet score The Rite of Spring, which premiered in Paris in 1913, was given its American premiere by the BSO in Depicting an imagined ancient ritual re-awakening of the earth, the score still has the power to thrill and even shock the listener with its raw, protean power. Thursday, April 11 Friday, April 12 (Casual Friday) Saturday, April 13 Gustavo Dudamel, conductor Sergio Tiempo, piano Aquiles Machado, tenor Gustavo Castillo, baritone Tanglewood Festival Chorus, James Burton, conductor Paul DESENNE El Caimán (April 11, 13) GINASTERA Piano Concerto No. 1 ESTÉVEZ Cantata Criolla For his second weeks of concerts, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel focuses on composers from his home continent. Now resident in the U.S., Caracas-born Paul Desenne is an alumnus of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolivar, the orchestra of Venezuela s remarkable music education program El Sistema, with which Dudamel is intimately connected. Desenne s brief El Caimán ( The Alligator ), originally commissioned by Dudamel, is infused with Latin dance and jazz elements. Gustavo Dudamel has been a stalwart champion of the Venezuelan Antonio Estévez s important Cantata Criolla for chorus and orchestra. Composed in 1954, the cantata sets a text by the Venezuelan poet Alberto Arvelo Torrealba. The great Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera s sparkling Piano Concerto No. 1, from 1961, was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Thursday, April 18 Friday, April 19, 1:30pm Saturday, April 20 Andrew Manze, conductor Francesco Piemontesi, piano BACEWICZ Concerto for String Orchestra MOZART Piano Concerto No. 19 in F, K.459 MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 5, Reformation Each making his BSO debut, English conductor Andrew Manze and Italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi join the orchestra for a somewhat rarely heard Mozart concerto, the vivacious No. 19 in F. Graźyna Bacewicz was one of Poland s most important composers of the mid-20th century, and one of very few women with an international reputation in that era. Her vigorous Concerto for String Orchestra won the Polish State Prize in Mendelssohn s Fifth Symphony, Reformation, is based in part on Martin Luther s hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. Thursday, April 25 Friday, April 26, 1:30pm Saturday, April 27 Tuesday, April 30* *Sponsored by Hemenway and Barnes LLP Daniil Trifonov, piano RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 3 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 15 Andris Nelsons and the BSO continue their Shostakovich symphony cycle, being recorded live for release on Deutsche Grammophon, with the composer s final work in the genre, No. 15. Composed in summer 1971 and premiered the following January, the Fifteenth is distinctive in its very surprising quotation from Rossini s William Tell Overture, as well as other musical allusions. The Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has won universal acclaim for both his technical brilliance and his expressive intensity. Both qualities are needed in Rachmaninoff s Piano Concerto No. 3, which is powerful, lyrical, and Russian to the core. Thursday, May 2, 10:30am Thursday, May 2 Friday, May 3, 1:30pm Saturday, May 4 Baiba Skride, violin STRAUSS Till Eulenspiegel s Merry Pranks Sebastian CURRIER Aether, for violin and orchestra (world premiere; BSO cocommission) STRAVINSKY Petrushka The Latvian violinist Baiba Skride joins her compatriot Andris Nelsons and the BSO for the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Sebastian Currier s Aether for violin and orchestra, a work cocommissioned by the BSO and the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig. Two unpredictable musical rogues bookend the new work: Till Eulenspiegel, who in Strauss s tone poem thumbs his nose at the establishment, rides his horse through a market, and comes to no good end; and Stravinsky s puppet-come-to-life Petrushka, whose attempts to win the admiration of a ballerina come to naught. In his second full ballet score for the Ballets Russes, two years before The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky s astonishing musical depictions of a Russian Shrovetide fair further cemented the reputation of the young composer of The Firebird.
