1 Newsletter November 2017 Proudly supporting the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Letter From Your New President: Exciting! Yes, that s the word I choose to describe my first few months as your President. I continue to learn my role and marvel at the impacts our organization has, not only within the Guild itself but to the Philharmonic and out to the community. From a national statistic, the Pikes Peak region continues to thrive and grow in major leaps and one large component of that is the tremendous orchestra we have. I said it before and it bears repeating bragging rights. The season kicked off the Masterworks series with Chopin, jumped into Tchaikovsky and continues with wonderful selections from Leonard Bernstein and a great mix of composers, commissioned pieces and key classical works. In lighter fare, Pops fans get treated to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, John Williams, Fleetwood Mac and other amazing soul-lifting music. Our annual Peachy Party was, of course, a great success as it continues to be a popular fundraising effort that brought in over $4000 this year. Beyond that are two (2) upcoming fundraisers kicking off the holidays. Again, we have the Nutcracker Boutique sales at the Pikes Peak Center (year #24) and a Friday matinee has been added to the schedule. After that, we have an awesome new approach to our holiday event, the Winter Dinner and Auction, to be held at the Garden of The Gods Club. Technology is constantly changing, and we drive right along with it as we incorporate the use of a new cell phone application called Gesture, which will drastically improve the entire auction process. No more running back to the auction table to see if someone has outbid you. Even if you are not able to join us for the evening, you will still be able to use the tool and bid. Isn t that cool? As you know, it is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we rely on all of you to participate by providing us with a minimum of one item for our silent or live auction. We need gifts and gift certificates of all kinds-restaurant, spa, golf, boutique, tickets, almost anything will sell. A donated bottle of wine from each member will be much appreciated as we add another fundraising dimension to our silent auction this year. Wine and auction items can be brought to the November meeting or you can contact auction chair, Janis Cross to arrange pickup. Donation forms and letters are also available by contacting Janis Cross, at janiscross2010@yahoo. com, or guild.philharmonic@gmail.com or call her at (719) We hope to see you all throughout this fabulous season at our membership meetings, fundraising events and at the Pikes Peak Center. Keep the music forever in your soul! 3 MAESTRO CIRCLE MAKES MORE MEMORIES ON 2017 EUROPEAN TRIP Guild and Maestro Circle members Sue Anselmi, Nora Courier, Dennis Keegan, Chris McGarry, John & Marion Meyer, Jim & Carol Montgomery, Kris Nelson, Marie (& Nathan) Newbrough, Fran Pilch, Pamela (& Bob) Street, Herman Tiemens and Annabel Widney arrived in Hamburg, Germany to begin a most memorable journey filled with sightseeing and unforgettable musical performances. The trip began with a stay at a hotel located in the heart of the bustling retail district of the city and overlooking one of the lakes, giving a peaceful tranquility as the swans floated by. Hamburg, located in northern Germany has been an important trading center going back many years in history. The group took advantage of city tours visiting many interesting points by coach, foot and cruise, including a visit to the nearby UNESCO world heritage site. The highlight of the visit to Hamburg was the tour and concert at the Elbphilharmonie, the newly opened concert hall located on the water. This hall, one of the largest and acoustically advanced concert halls in the world, opened on January 11, 2017, is a vision to behold. Following a delicious dinner, the group continued to the hall for a concert by the Dresden Festival Orchestra, conducted by our very own Maestro Josep Caballé- Domenech. The next day included another musically magnificent experience as the travelers went to the Hamburg State Opera House for a performance of I Pagliacci, again stunningly conducted by Maestro Josep. A short flight from Hamburg to Amsterdam brought the group to the Venice of the North, so named for the many canals and remarkable architecture. Again touring by bus, foot and boat, the group was able to explore the city and environs, learning how to make cheese and wooden shoes along with exploring the historic windmills. The musical offering in Amsterdam was a beautiful performance of Beethoven s Symphony No. 5 at the Concertgebouw. Sitting in the hall one could feel the history within its walls. Mahler, Strauss, Rachmaninoff all played their compositions here and many notable conductors have led the Concertbouw Orchestra. As all good things must come to an end- farewells were said to new and old friends. The memories of this trip will linger but the question on everyone s lips was - when is the next trip and where will it be? Foreign and domestic trips are available to Maestro Circle members on a first come first serve basis. Contact Catherine Creppon in the Philharmonic office for information on joining the Maestro Circle and all the benefits that Maestro Circle membership offers. Panoramic view of the magnificent Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Judith McKay, Guild member since 2016, and an Ohio gal, arrived in Colorado Springs by circumnavigating the world with a lot of curiosity, and a penchant for learning and exploring. Judith played the clarinet in the high school marching band, tromping over the many fields with the band displaying its marching techniques to music. She also learned to play the handbells. One of her most memorable moments was playing Pachebel s Canon on the largest handbell at a beautiful country English church on Christmas Eve. (Little did she know her future husband would be there.) Music continues to show up in many other ways, playing the piano and CD s, watching movies and going to a variety of musical concerts. And where there is music, the creative juices flow, dreams are dreamed, and her heart and soul dance to the beat. Judith s professional career spanned 25 years as an accountant and financial manager from the east coast to west coast and including Japan. Offered a job in England as a Financial Manager and Budget Analyst, the world was at her fingertips. She traveled every chance she had. While in Japan, she taught English for Japanese companies for five years, researched and wrote stories for a military historian, and was a proofreader for the Stars and Stripes newspaper in Tokyo. She had the time of her life traveling and eating her way throughout the Far East learning about the cultures and traditions of that part of the world, including new genres of music, one being Taiko drumming. As curiosity plays a big part in Judith s life, her next chapter began on a new pathway leading her to a career in radio broadcasting on a public radio station in Montana. For two and one-half years she produced and hosted a one-hour weekly radio talk show, interviewing the Governor, Senator and many in the cultural community to name a few. During that time, the Bicentennial of Lewis and Clark was celebrated in Monticello, Virginia for a week in January. Since Montana had a strong connection to Lewis and Clark, she travelled to Monticello, interviewing Ken Burns, Native Americans, scholars and the Secretary of the Interior, among others. While in Montana, she enjoyed serving on two City and County Commissions - International Relations Board and Historic Preservation. Curiosity continues to take her into new adventures, the latest being the move to Colorado Springs seven years ago. She became an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and also continues to produce and host a weekly one-hour radio talk show on KCMJ, 93.9Fm, community radio, which can also be streamed globally on the Internet. Judith is passionate about offering people and organizations an opportunity to share their enthusiasm and energy with their stories, food for thought, special events in supporting community, and the world. Amazing how far out podcasts can reach. A very informative and delightful interview took place with our CS Philharmonic conductor, and interviews with the cultural, educational and economic communities continue to enlighten and inform her audience. It has been and continues to be the most rewarding volunteer job she has ever experienced. Sharing stories continues to be a grand and glorious experience and education. Judith s journey continues to unfold and open to new challenges and opportunities, all with much gratitude. We are thrilled that Judith is sharing her skills and experiences as a member of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Guild. 4 Colorado Springs Philharmonic Guild April November Newsletter Newsletter guild.csphilharmonic.org 5
