2 To stream you need: A camera that is sending video and sound out via HDMI A video capture card (thunderbolt or PCI): the CDA has the Blackmagic Intensity Extreme external capture card (thunderbolt connection) with an HDMI input Encoding and Streaming Software (OBS) A Google account

3 Setting up the Capture Card Download the Blackmagic Desktop Video software (this is the driver for the video card) on to the computer you wish to use for streaming borrow a laptop from the CDA depot Connect your camera s HDMI output to HDMI IN on the Blackmagic Intensity Extreme device Connect the device to your computer via thunderbolt

4 If you are using your own laptop, the Desktop Video application is available on the Blackmagic Design support page under latest downloads. The software is identical for all of their video cards.

5 Verify that you are receiving a signal via the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup Application. Here I am sending a p (23.98) video signal from the camera.

6 You may have to select the output video format to match the HDMI output of your camera. Make sure you select the NTSC frame rate of 1080p23.98 not 1080p24 (or 1080p29.97 not 1080p30).

7 Download and Install OBS, open broadcaster software (obsproject.com). This encoding and streaming software is pre-installed on all cda laptops.

8 In OBS, create a scene. Press the plus button.

9 Then add a source: the Blackmagic Device.

10 In the source options, specify the device and the mode (image size and frame rate): you should see the image from your camera if your frame rate and image size match the camera output.

11 You should see the video in OBS.

12 Go into the OBS settings (bottom right above exit). Set the Base Canvas Resolution to 1920 x 1080 and the output to 1280 x 720 Under Common FPS Values choose 30 FPS if you are sending a 24p signal from the camera. There is no 24 FPS option but it does not seem to alter the video. But don t start streaming yet. You have to determine where you are streaming to.

13 Log into your Google Account. Go to the You Tube App in your Google Apps.* * I apologize for this sentence.

14 Once in You Tube, under your account, select the Creator Studio button. Creator Studio allows you to stream video using You Tube streaming servers.

15 In Creator Studio, you have the option to stream now, or create an event. First, we will look at the stream now option.

16 At the bottom of the stream now page, take note of the Encoder Setup information.

17 This information needs to be pasted into the OBS Stream settings using a Custom Streaming Server Stream Type. This determines the destination of the stream.

18 Now Start Streaming in OBS: you should see the stream information appear at the bottom of the page: the bit rate in kb/s, the elapsed time and whether frames were dropped. Note, in OBS you may wish to mute the Desktop Audio track. This is the built-in microphone on your laptop.

19 It will take a few minutes for the stream to go live. The stream is available on You Tube under your account, privately or publically. Unless you specify, it will be recorded and archived in You Tube as well.

20 Creating An Event in Creator Studio: an event is a stream that will start at a particular time.

21 In the Basic Info, you schedule the time and whether the event is public or private. Use the Custom type of encoding, not the Quick encoding using Google Hangouts.

22 In the Ingestion Settings, add a thumbnail image and choose Basic Ingestion.

23 Choose the 720p basic Ingestion preset. Your Encoder is an Other Encoder. The Primary Server URL can now be pasted in the stream settings in OBS. The Stream Name is called the Steam Key in OBS.

24 Paste the Stream URL and Stream Name into the Stream settings in OBS. Now start the stream in OBS.

25 In the Live Control Room, preview the stream to test it. Once the Start Streaming button appears and turns blue you can preview the stream by pressing play in the preview window.

26 Once the stream is previewing, you have the option to start streaming live but don t do it! This will cancel your event and you will have to start over with the event creation process.

27 This is what an event looks like on your You Tube Channel, waiting to be streamed.

28 Note, in Creator Studio, in the Advanced Settings of your event under Recording, You Tube will automatically record the event and make this recording available on your You Tube channel, unless you checkmark the make unlisted entry.
