1. Our guidelines The world is a far more energetic place than it was five years ago. There are more cyclists, more fitness clubs, more people of all ages taking up sport, there s more colour and movement in our ever changing world. The Softball Australia brand needs to evolve and be relevant to this changing world. It needs to project new energy and capture the surprise and spirit of playing a great game under the Aussie sky. The Softball Australia brand is a valuable asset that contributes to the profiles of our athletes and the programs and the support Softball Australia provides to Member States, Associations and Clubs. It is important to maintain a consistent look and feel across all visual material from stationery to promotional material. This Style Guide outlines the graphic principles, the colours, typography and application for the evolving brand look and feel. This way we can ensure that applications of the Softball Australia logo and Member State logos and other graphic elements all speak with one voice. The Style Guide does not seek to be rigid and describe all possible applications, but provides simple instructions that illustrate correct use and application that can be translated to a wide variety of scenarios. It is important that all the elements that make up the Softball Australia brand are used accurately and effectively by all partners and stakeholders. If any specific needs or variations arise that are not covered, please consult the Softball Australia Marketing Team. These guidelines supersede all previous guidelines. The usage standards set out in these guidelines are supplemental to, and are not intended to replace any relevant provisions regarding the use of Softball Australia s intellectual property set out in any agreement between Softball Australia and any authorised user. All graphics featured in this guide can be obtained by ing office@softball.org.au and can only be used with the written consent of Softball Australia. 6 4. Our logo 4.1 Logo Construction The logo is a specially drawn device and must not be type-set, traced, re-spaced, redrawn or modified by either manual or electronic methods. The relationship between the elements of the logo are fixed and the proportions, spacing and relative positioning of the elements must remain consistent. Please note, the standard configuration of the logo comes in two versions to cover a wide range of size scales. Common use of the logo should follow the specifications and themes described in these guidelines. The Softball Australia logo is the exclusive property of Softball Australia and is protected under trade mark and copyright laws throughout the world. When using the logo, the trade mark symbol must appear legibly within the frame of the logo, in the position indicated. Softballer graphic Logo type Trade mark symbol 5

4.2 Logo Colour When printing Colour accuracy and consistency are very important to help maintain our brand. The Softball Australia logo is made up of two main corporate colours green and yellow appearing on a white background. When producing material, it is important to be aware of the production process that will be used to ensure an accurate representation of the colour is achieved. Colour can differ when used on different materials or surfaces such as coated and uncoated paper, fabric and even when displayed on computer monitors. The most cost-effective printing process is the four colour process that creates colours by combining four core colours: CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW and BLACK. We call this the CMYK breakdown of a colour. Each PMS colour has a corresponding CMYK breakdown to enable printing using the four colour process. Always use the CMYK percentage breakdowns specified opposite to achieve the closest match to the Pantone colours when printing materials that use the Softball Australia corporate green and yellow (in the logo as well as in content). When displaying on the web To help maintain consistency of colour reproduction we need to ensure that the best colour source is used and matched back to the corporate colours. The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a globally recognised colour standard used to define colours. The baseline reference point for the Softball Australia corporate green and yellow are the PMS colours indicated opposite. HTML web-based applications use a HEX colour breakdown to replicate colours as they are displayed through a monitor. When using Microsoft Microsoft applications such as PowerPoint, Word and Excel use the RGB colour breakdown, ie a combination of RED, GREEN, BLUE to colour match back to the PMS colours. When embroidering Pantone 341C C 100, M 0, Y 67, K 29 R 0, G 130, B 101 HTML 007D57 Pantone 123C C 0, M 24, Y 94, K 0 R 255, G 196, B 37 37HTML FDC82F From the PMS colour we can then match the corporate colours in common production processes. TC (thread colour) refers to the colours of cotton used for embroidery. There are not as many thread colours to choose from when embroidering items so there may not be an exact match back to the Pantone system. Care should be taken by way of pre-production samples to ensure colours marry back as close as possible to the Pantone colour reference. Contact the Softball Australia Marketing Team for recommended thread colours for Softball Australia and national programs. Please note that printed colours in this Style Guide are indicative and may not truly represent specified colours. Pantone colour values and breakdowns may be subject to change by Pantone. 6

4.3 Logo Size alternatives The standard configuration of the logo comes in two versions. 1. The standard logo option is the preferred option and should be the first choice for all applications. It has a minimum height of the two words Softball Australia of 6.5mm but no maximum. 2. The small logo option is used for situations when the TM symbol may not be reproduced due to reproduction restrictions, eg embroidery. Standard logo 6.5mm In these instances, the TM symbol can be removed. The small logo version has a lower end minimum width of 3.5mm and an upper end maximum of up to 6.5mm. Please note, in situations where the words Softball Australia will appear at exactly 6.5mm, use the standard logo option. Small logo 3.5mm 7

4.4 Logo Clear space The logo contains no natural border or frame and therefore requires minimum clearance, or free space, around it on all sides. The amount of minimum clear space is measured by the distance of X where X is equal to the height of the two words Softball Australia in the logo and must be consistent around the perimeter of the logo. Clear space denotes the area around the logo in which no other type, graphic and/or photographic elements must encroach. The clear space area assists to maintain the impact of the logo and ensures consistent quality of reproduction. X X X X X X 8

4.5 Logo Backgrounds The full colour logo on a white background is always the preferred use of the logo. If reversing the full colour logo out of a background colour, the preferred background colour is black. Use the solid black version of the logo on light shaded or greyscale backgrounds. Other coloured backgrounds will be considered on a case by case basis. 4.6 Logo Single colour In instances where the full colour logo cannot be applied due to printing or media limitations, the single colour or black and white logo should be used to comply with reproduction specifications. Positive and reverse options are available for use. The Softball Australia green single colour version of the logo is the preferred single colour application. Examples of when you might need to use a single colour logo could be in black-only pages of a newspaper, shirts or uniforms or engraving on metal plaques. A The preferred background colour for full colour logo is white B Alternative full colour logo on a black background Softball Australia green (Preferred option) Softball Australia yellow Black (Monotone) 9

4.7 Logo Single colour reverse The logo may be reproduced on photographic, graphic or tonal backgrounds, provided these backgrounds do not obstruct and/or compromise the integrity of the logo. When the logo is applied to photos or layouts with complex backgrounds, be sure to keep minimum clear space around the logo to maintain the logo s integrity and clarity. Refer to page 8 for more detail about clear space. In situations where the Softball Australia logo can only appear on a coloured background, it is preferred that the background colour is either the corporate yellow or green from the logo and the single colour version of the logo is used. Softball Australia green (on yellow background) Avoid using the full colour logo on a green or yellow background as the definition of the logo elements get lost. Softball Australia white (on photographic background) Softball Australia yellow (on green background) 10

4.8 Logo Incorrect use Please take care not to use the Softball Australia logo incorrectly. Incorrect use can weaken and damage the integrity and impact of the brand. Do not change the relationship or proportions of the logo elements Do not change the colour order Do not use the logo without the correct trade mark and copyright notices Do not keyline any elements of the logo Do not change the orientation of the logo, ie turn on an angle SOFTBALL AUSTRALIA Do not alter the logotype or use a substitute typeface Do not crop the logo. Always use the logo in its entirety Do not blend any other corporate name, trade mark, text or logo with the logo Do not use any part of the logo in isolation Please remember all applications of the Softball Australia logo must be approved in writing prior to release and/or distribution. 11

4.9 State logos Member State logos have been created following the design premise of the Softball Australia logo. Each logo comprises two/three colours to simplify production and create consistency. Positive and negative applications are supplied for each logo. All other guidelines created for the primary Softball Australia logo should be applied to the logos. NORTHERN TERRITORY QUEENSLAND VICTORIA WESTERN AUSTRALIA 12

5. Brand elements In addition to the logo there are a number of elements that make up the Softball brand. These elements are described in detail in this section and road tested in various applications in Section 6 How it all works, on page The Softball shape as a frame A graphic shape, unique to Softball Australia, has been developed as a bordering device and image frame. Using the shape of the recognised homeplate we can enlarge it, mask it and rotate it in all directions to suit the application. It works in many mediums, drawing your eye to message detail and imagery. 15

Pantone 291C C 53, M 19, Y 0, K 0 R 114, G 175, B The colours of Softball The core colours of Softball are the colours of the outdoors. Pantone Reflex Blue C C 89, M 70, Y 0, K 0 R 46, G 92, B 170 the blue sky the green fields the golden glow of a bright yellow sun the red and rustic earth Rather than using flat colours, wherever we can, we will use a gradient of these colours. Gradients are supplied in the templates supplied with the Style Guide. Where it is not possible to use a gradient due to size or printing restrictions, use a flat colour. The guidelines provide flexibility when it comes to choice of core colour for headlines and border shapes. We recommend that the choice of colour is one that complements the colour in your imagery. When using colours for the headline, use the two complimentary colours that are recommended, based on the border colour. The balance of these two colours in headlines is flexible, as you can see from the examples. When an image is not included in a communication, the headline colour can be any of the core colours, or black, if the communication is in black and white. 18 5.3 The typography It is important to have a typographical discipline so that all material maintains a similar look and will be easily recognised as coming from Softball Australia or a Member State. Display headings For our display headings, we have chosen an active typeface one that has energy and movement, like the game itself. And one that will stand out from the usual crowd of headlines. Our display heading type is Dead Kansas. It works best in short headlines, so please try and avoid long statements. Headlines should be in a good size font, for example on an A4 page the headline will be around 50pt. It should be used at a minimum size of 30pt and maximum of 60pt on an A4 page. Sub-headings and body copy Our sub-headings and body copy font is called Agenda. Agenda is easy to read, clean and business like to help deliver support information and detail with sharpness and clarity. There are two specified weights for Agenda: - Agenda Light: To be used for all general typeset preprinted body text setting, for example brochure text, stationery address details and business forms. - Agenda Bold: To be used sparingly where extra emphasis is required for text and subheadings. Dead Kansas can be downloaded at Agenda can be downloaded at In instances where Agenda and Dead Kansas is not available, the system font Arial can be used. Please note that Arial should be used on all electronic applications such as letters, faxes, memos and other media produced internally by Softball Australia. 17

5.4 The images of Softball The choice of photos and how we frame them can make a big difference to how we are seen. We have decided, where possible, to give Softball Australia a distinct look by using a photographic technique that will target our visuals with sharp focus on the hero and a softer focus on the background. This technique can be produced at the artwork stage but as we build our photo library we should consider this effect when taking photos. When selecting photography, avoid, if you can, the typical clichéd imagery and search for natural and engaging images. Consider looking beyond the players and include more umpires, coaches and supporters, images of surprise, excitement and involvement. A library of images is available to all Member States, Associations and Clubs and contains a number of images that can be used in marketing collateral. Most photographs have copyright restrictions, therefore use of any photography sourced from the Softball Australia image library must be approved by Softball Australia s Marketing Team. Refer to page 38 for more information on the approval process. Where permission has been granted from a professional photographer, the photographer should be acknowledged on materials. When using images of children, please ensure you have written parental approval. Refer to the Photo Permission form on H: National Office Forms. The following page provides examples of our real life photographic style. Images can be grouped into four key categories: Action Participation Celebration Diversity 18

5.4 The images of Softball (cont d) Action Participation Celebration Diversity 19

5.4 The images of Softball (cont d) Imagery can be placed within the framing device to add dimension to our communications. The framing device is very flexible and can be used for both large and small image areas in a selection of colours. It should be used sparingly. Most importantly it is unique to Softball Australia and flexible enough to find expression in many things we do. Please note, it does not have to be used on every piece. It should be used sparingly. The examples opposite demonstrate overuse, correct use and the flexibility of the shape device in accommodating different sized imagery. The core colours and font (Dead Kansas) of the graphic are taken from the core brand elements of Softball Australia. The graphic should appear on all material relating to the Softball Community Coaching Program and must adhere to the same principles outlined in this document for the Softball Australia logo, ie do not change any elements, distort or recolour the logo and always maintain a clear space around the logo (5mm clear space for the Softball Community Coaching Program graphic). The preferred use is the combined graphic. The Softball Batter Up characters and graphic are the exclusive property of Softball Australia and are protected under trade mark and copyright laws. The characters have been approved for use based on similar characters used by the Australian Sports Commission and must not be altered in any way without approval from Softball Australia s Marketing Team and the ASC. 34 7.4 National teams The four Softball national teams are represented by their own team insignia. These four team logos have been developed to give each team a unique identity of their own and at the same time a Softball Australia family feel when viewed together. The team logos are primarily used on uniforms. Under special circumstances and with prior approval by Softball Australia s Marketing Team, they can be used on merchandise and promotional material. Logos are available as jpg and eps format from Softball Australia s Marketing Team, including special versions suitable for embroidery. The same guidelines created for the primary Softball Australia logo also apply to the use of the national team logos, such as don t distort the logo, don t recolour the logo, and don t change the proportion of elements within the logo graphics. Please refer to page 11 for full details. Pantone 7484 C 90, M 30, Y 95, K 30 R 0, G 104, B 56 Pantone 605C C 0, M 5, Y 100, K 5 R 247, G 218, B 0 33

8. Co-branding (business partners and sponsors) Material produced in conjunction with other organisations is often co-branded. In such instances, the best approach for association with non-softball Australia brands is to separate the Softball Australia logo from any other symbols or logo, allowing each entity to be viewed in clear space. We must remember that business partners and sponsors also need to maintain the integrity of their logo. The clear space rule will help ensure this across all mediums, including the web. Ensure you allow enough clear space around sponsor logos. Be aware of the DO NOT examples of execution listed on page 11 of this guide as they also apply to business partners and sponsors logos. Sometimes business partners and sponsors provide low resolution versions of their logo that will not reproduce clearly on printed material. If this is the case, please ask them to resupply a high resolution file. This not only ensures their logo is well represented, but also ensures that our materials reproduce professionally. Opposite are examples of low resolution logos. All of these would not reproduce well when applied to printed material. Some examples of low resolution logos. Refer to Section 9 for guidelines on the use of the ASC and AIS logos. If you have any questions regarding sponsorship or the use of non-softball Australia brands, please contact Softball Australia s Marketing Team. 34

9. Use of Australian Sports Commission logos 9.1 Australian Sports Commission logo The ASC logo can be used by clients and partners of the ASC, including national sporting organisations (on signage, publications, promotional material, apparel, etc) and must comply with the ASC Logo Usage Guidelines. The latest copy of the ASC Logo Usage Guidelines can be found at: ASC logos cannot be used for external purposes or on products without appropriate ASC authorisation. Approval for national sporting organisations use of the ASC logos must be obtained for each usage, from corporate communications, in consultation with the sports consultant responsible for the particular sport. Communications Officer PO Box 176 Belconnen ACT 2616 Tel: Fax: The following information is a summary of how to use the ASC logo as at May The guidelines for the use of ASC logo also applies to electronic applications of the logo including internet pages, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations and s. Refer to the latest copy of the guidelines from the ASC website The ASC logo is available in two layouts: stacked and inline. Discretion is to be used when deciding the appropriate version of the logo, however if a situation arises where either logo could be used, the stacked version is to be applied. When ASC logos are used with other corporate logos, eg in sponsorship arrangements or joint initiatives, the size and placement of the logos should be discussed with the ASC Communications Officer. Colours The logo can be reproduced in corporate blue PMS 288, CMYK (C100, M67, Y0, K23) or RGB (R14, G46, B115), black or white. If a situation arises when any of these colours can be used, the corporate blue version is to be applied. The logo is not to be reproduced in more than one colour. Minimum size The minimum size to reproduce the logo is 20mm wide. For applications where this minimum size presents a difficulty, contact the ASC Communications Officer. Stacked logo Inline logo 20mm 20mm Pantone 341C C 100, M 67, Y 0, K 23 R 14, G 46, B

Correct use Logos must be reproduced in their full and correct forms. The words of the logos are an integral part of the logo. Logos must not be scanned, retraced or redrawn (for electronic versions of the logos, please contact the ASC Communications Officer). Logo use Do not use the incorrect format of the logo, eg do not use a jpg on a coloured background as a white box will surround the logo. A reversed-out eps should be used in this instance. Do not delete the words of the logos Do not add text or graphics to the logos Do not distort logos when rescaling Do not set logos smaller than the minimum size specified Do not tilt the design Do not use the logos on a busy background or a photograph. There must be clear space of no less than 50% of the logo height and width surrounding the logo Do not change the colours of the logos Do not tint the colours of the logos 36 Do not rearrange the design Do not swap the colours of the logos Do not use any part of the design as a graphic element Do not use the design in a low-contrast manner Logo positioning The ASC logos must be given prominent positioning when used with other logos. When ASC logos are used with other corporate logos, the relative size and position should be discussed with the ASC Communications Officer. As the ASC logo incorporates the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, conditions regarding the positioning of the Arms must be observed: The Arms should be placed in a position of prominence at the top left of a page Logos, text or illustrations may not be placed above the Arms The Arms should appear only once in a document For transitory communications, such as television and print advertisements, the Arms may be placed elsewhere on the document as appropriate, provided the dignity of the Arms is maintained and is not reproduced in a size that renders the Arms unrecognisable

9.2 Australian Institute of Sport logo The guidelines outlined for the use of the ASC logo also apply to the use of the AIS logo such as don t distort the logo, don t recolour the logo, and don t change the proportion of elements within the logo graphics. Please refer to pages for full details. The minimum size to reproduce the logo is 18mm wide. For applications where this minimum size presents a difficulty, contact the ASC Communications Officer. Softball Australia matters pertaining to the AIS Women s team need to include the AIS logo. A special Softball Australia letterhead with the AIS logo is available for exclusive use of the AIS Women s Program. Pantone 288C C 100, M 67, Y 0, K 23 R 0, G 75, B 141 Pantone 485C C 0, M 95, Y 100, K 0 R 238, G 49, B 36 Level 1, Suite 2, 273 Wellington St, Collingwood VIC 3066 t f Reference of ASC in Softball Australia Principal Partner The ASC is a Principal Partner of Softball Australia and must be recognised on key marketing materials and stationery items. The logo can be used by itself or alongside the words Principal Partner as shown opposite. Speak to Softball Australia s Marketing Team for advice on when it is appropriate to include reference to Principal Partner. 37

10. Artwork and approval process These guidelines have been developed to help Softball Australia, Member States, associations and clubs build and maintain the integrity and expression of the Softball brand. A number of pre-supplied templates for promotional material are available for use by Softball Australia, Member States, associations and clubs. These templates are available from Softball Australia s Marketing Team (see contact details opposite). If you are using the pre-supplied templates without making any changes to the layouts, you do not need to obtain approval for use. If you are altering any of the pre-supplied templates or creating new material that carries the Softball Australia brand, including national programs or national team branding, you must obtain written approval from Softball Australia prior to use. Requests for approval must be ed or mailed to the contact details opposite. You will need to allow three working days for Softball Australia to review and approve your material. We also suggest making a phone call to ensure the Marketing Team is aware that you are sending material for approval. Send your material for approval to: Softball Australia Marketing Team Level 1, Suite 2, 273 Wellington Street, Collingwood VIC 3066 t: e: kylie.bloodworth@softball.org.au Please note You also need to obtain ASC/AIS approval if you are using their logo on any material. Refer to page 35 for contact details. 38

11.
