17 17 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number Cook, James: THE THREE FAMOUS VOYAGES OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK ROUND THE WORLD, narrating his discoveries and adventures in Tierra del Fuego, Tahiti, New Zealand, Van Diemen s Land, Australia, The Friendly Islands, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, The Sandwich Islands, Western North America, etc., Together with the Account of his Murder at Hawaii, and the subsequent Voyage of Captain King to Kamschatka, Japan and China. With Numerous Full-page Illustrations and Engravings in the Text. Ward, Lock, and Co, London: Warwick House, Salisbury Square, E.C. New York: Bond Street. Thick med. 8vo; pp. [iv], xx, 1176, [10](adv.); 1 folding & 1 full-page maps, 24 plates, numerous text illusts., appendix, vocabulary; original lime-green colour-illustrated cloth (a little worn; hinges cracked, but tapes firm; some foxing & mild soiling); a very good copy. London; Ward, Lock, and Co.; N.D. [c. 1890]. ***Not corresponding exactly to any of the entries in Beddie, but generally similar to 189 (cf. publisher s imprint). The text appears to conform to the official accounts, i.e. Hawkesworth s edition of the first voyage and the original editions of the second and third voyages, with the omission of the introduction to the third voyage and an abridgement of the appendix. These voyage accounts are preceded by a brief life of Cook, and there are numerous footnotes by the unnamed editor. The presence of stab-holes in the inner margins suggests this work was originally issued in serial parts. #64875 A$450.00

18 18 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number Cook, Captain James: A JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, in His Majesty s Ship Endeavour, in the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, and 1771; Undertaken in Pursuit of Natural Knowledge, at the Desire of the Royal Society: Containing all the various Occurrences of the Voyage, with Descriptions of several new discovered Countries in the Southern Hemisphere; and Accounts of their Soil and Productions; and of many Singularities in the Structure, Apparel, Customs, Manners, Policy, Manufactures, &c. of their Inhabitants. Demy 4to, Facsimile Edition; pp. [ii](modern title), [ii](original title-page), 130, [4](vocabulary of Otaheite, last blank), [2](blank); (slight mark to top edge, o/wise a fine copy); scarce. [Amsterdam; N. Israel; 1967]. ***Bibliotheca Australiana No. 14. This edition Beddie 701; see Holmes 3, Beddie 694, for original edition. The first issue contained a Dedication to Banks and Solander, which was suppressed after a small number of copies had been circulated, following the publication of an advertisement by Banks and Solander, disclaiming any responsibility for its publication. The dedication is not reproduced in this facsimile. This rare surreptitious account of Cook s First Voyage preceded Hawkesworth s official account by two years. It is the first published account of Cook s First Voyage and of his discovery of the Eastern Coast of Australia, which led to the Foundation of Australia eighteen years later. The authorship of the work is a matter of conjecture - it has been ascribed to JAMES MAGRA (or MATRA) and others, but the evidence is inconclusive. #26437 A$500.00

20 20 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number Duyker, Edward. AN OFFICER OF THE BLUE. Marc- Joseph Marion Dufresne, South Sea Explorer, Med. 8vo, First Edition; pp. xviii, 230(last blank); 13 maps, 28 plates (11 col.), glossary, 4 appendices, extensive notes, bibliog., index; original papered boards; a fine copy in d/w.; scarce. Melbourne; Melbourne University Press; ***Number 16 in the fine series of books published under the Miegunyah Press imprint and a superb and interesting production. The French explorer, Marion Dufresne has been largely neglected by French, English and Australian writers alike, but he reached Tasmania before the English and his expedition was the first to encounter the Tasmanian Aborigines and amongst the earliest of the European visitors to New Zealand. His life is remarkable for its high adventure and the parallels with the life of the great English navigator, James Cook. He played a part in the rescue from Scotland of Bonnie Prince Charlie, made numerous voyages to the East, including amongst his discoveries the most westerly islands of the Indian Ocean. Like Cook, he was a brilliant mariner who learned his craft in merchant shipping before joining the French Royal Navy, was involved in scientific efforts to observe the transit of Venus, and perished (in New Zealand) at the hands of Polynesian natives. This excellent and well-produced biography fills a glaring gap in the exploration literature and we recommend it highly. Only 1000 copies were printed and it was soon out-of-print. #42680 A$295.00

Both the text and atlas of the Navigation and Geography are very rare and complete sets of the entire work are seldom encountered. The charts in the Atlases (both to the Navigation and to the Partie Historique) are mainly by de Freycinet, and the fine illustrations are by Lesueur and Petit. The plates consist of 5 coloured coastal views, natural history subjects (9 coloured), topographical views, native weapons, canoes, habitations, etc. (some coloured), and 10 portraits (4 coloured) of NAMED Aborigines by NICHOLAS PETIT. One of the folding topographical views is a fine plate of Sydney by Lesueur. Francois Peron ( ), naturalist and historian, was first intended for the priesthood, but with the Revolution joined the army. He served on the Rhine, was wounded (losing an eye), captured, and on repatriation in 1794 was invalided out of the army. He studied natural

46 46 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books Short List Number history and gained an appointment in Baudin s expedition to the South Seas. He worked tirelessly in amassing specimens and information relative to the animal life of Australia and its environs, thus making a significant contribution to Australian zoology. On the return of the expedition Peron undertook the compilation of the history of the voyage; but ill-health forced him to abandon it half-way through, and it was completed by de Freycinet. Louis de Freycinet ( ) was an hydrographer and cartographer in the French Navy. As a result of his highly creditable work in the Baudin expedition he was appointed to the command of a circumnavigatory expedition (in L Uranie and La Physicienne) from 1816 to 1820, during which voyage he again visited the Australian coasts. The expedition was commanded by Nicolas Baudin, who died at Batavia on the way home. The purpose of the voyage was the thorough examination of the western and southern coasts of Australia, and especially to investigate a belief that a strait existed linking the southern sea with the Gulf of Carpentaria, thus dividing New Holland into two large islands. A six months stay at Sydney is fully described by Peron, embodying a valuable account of life in the early years of the settlement. Despite the failure of the expedition to complete its allotted tasks and the untimely death of its commander the scientific achievements were outstanding and many hundreds of plants were illustrated and described and in addition a collection of over eighteen thousand Zoological specimens was amassed, together with observations on numerous subjects - all this with a complement greatly reduced (both in scientific staff & crew) by desertion and illness! #13976 A$110,000.00
