2 AVAILABLE SHORTLY Jarman, Robert. JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE TO THE SOUTH SEAS, IN THE JAPAN, employed in the Sperm Whale Fishery, under the Command of Capt. John May. By Robert Jarman. First published at Beccles and London in Edited, with an Introduction, Notes, Chronology, and Index, by Robert M. Warneke, and faithfully reprinted from the original. Melbourne: Edition Renard vo, Limited New Edition; pp. XII, vi, 242, [243]-318; portrait, introduction, extensive notes, chronology and index. Melbourne; Edition Renard; ***Available shortly in a limited edition of 200 copies for sale, a new edition of the very rare account first published in two issues in 1838 and until now never reprinted - see Forbes 1104, also Bagnall 2685 and Ferguson 2526 (and 2526a). Robert Jarman, the son of a printer at Beccles, joined the crew as a young man of twenty years on a whaling voyage to the South Seas in During the next three to four years young Robert s forecastle jottings were transformed into a lively and well-crafted tale. The primary theme is the hard, unrelenting search for whales, reflected in Jarman s methodical recording of encounters with other whalers and elaborated with graphic descriptions of the excitements and dangers of whaling with the inevitable accidents, injuries, and tragic deaths. After cruising the Japan Sea, the ship reached the Hawaiian Islands at the end of October 1832 and anchored at Honolulu. The author noted 18 whalers in port. He describes the harbor and the method by which ships were towed in, and the Honolulu Fort, and the town and its native people (Forbes). He tells also of surviving gales and near disaster when the Japan was dismasted in a hurricane, which forced the stricken ship to Sydney for extensive repairs. Jarman gives an interesting account of Sydney, with perceptive comments on convicts and their management and the Aboriginals and their customs including the use of the boomerang. Subsequently the ship cruised around Rotuma, the Fiji Islands and New Zealand before returning to England. Along the way Jarman gives accounts of visits to bays and islands to trade for fresh provisions, and of longer stays at various ports for wood, water and to benefit the crew. A welcome respite from the rigors and grinding repetition of shipboard life, Jarman was obviously captivated by those of the natives who were friendly, and he perceptively and sympathetically described their modes of life, customs, and the effects of European intercourse and colonization. The scope and appeal of this book is enhanced by some lengthy passages on natural history, including observations on the social behaviour of sperm whales and encounters with sharks, other fish and birds. Because of several chance but pertinent events he was able to include commentaries on several dramatic episodes of Pacific maritime history, such as the Bligh mutiny and its aftermath, and recent massacres of ships crews by islanders -- a constant fear for lightly-armed visiting whalers. 5 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 3 fine, generally clean and crisp copy; extremely rare. London; Printed for C. Whitefield; ***Of the several unauthorized accounts of Anson s famous voyage that appeared shortly after his return, and years before the official version of 1748, this seems to be indisputably the rarest. We have been unable to trace any record of sale apart from this copy and can find only two copies in libraries, one in the British Library, and another in the National Library of Scotland, to both of which this copy conforms. There appears to be no copy in North America or in Europe or in Australasia. Another edition was published in 1749, and this appears to be equally rare, if not rarer. We have been able to trace only the single copy in the University of Newcastle library in the U.K. The publication may well have been issued initially in weekly or fortnightly parts as various signatures are numbered from No III to No XV (the gatherings being somewhat irregular but mostly in alternate 8s and 4s, A to Cc), the first four signatures however do not bear any part numbers. The text gives every appearance of being Authentic and Genuine as claimed in the title, with detailed, dated, and for the most part daily, entries giving information additional to that in other accounts of Anson s voyage such as the official account by Richard Walter and the accounts of Bulkeley and Cummins, Pascoe Thomas, etc., as well as corroborating these accounts in other particulars. This text is therefore an important source for accurate information on this famous voyage. In addition to the daily doings of the ships, there are extensive accounts of the places visited, their natural history, inhabitants etc. For example, detailed accounts are given of Juan Fernandez, Acapulco, several parts of the East Indies, Philippines, Canton & Singapore, Cape of Good Hope, Streights of Magellan, sealing activities, etc. This is a fascinating account of considerable importance and extreme rarity. #34188 A$65, Armitage, Albert B. TWO YEARS IN THE ANTARCTIC: Being a Narrative of the British National Antarctic Expedition. First Edition; pp. xx, 316(last blank), 16(inserted adv.); coloured folding map by Lieut. London; Edward Arnold; ***With the armorial bookplate of Major Dudley Alexander on paste-down and inscribed by (or for) him on free endpaper. Spence 67; Renard 50; Rosove 17.A1.a. Alecto has used stochastic lithography to prepare the plates and printed them by hand one colour at a time on a FAG flatbed proofing press to wonderful effect. The Natural History Museum has undertaken not to sanction another printing of this magnificent work for at least fifty years. Each plate is blind embossed with the chops of the publishers and is titled and numbered in pencil. Loosely enclosed is an example of the original prospectus and pre-publication information. We understand that 10 of the 50 sets have been sold as individual prints, leaving only 50 complete sets in existence (including those hors commerce ). #15695 A$16, Beaglehole, J. C. Sydney; James Tegg; ***A special presentation binding with stamping in gilt on front board to Coln. Perceval, C.B. from the Editor Wm. Bland. Ferguson 2234; Wantrup 110 and page 187 (q.v.). A rare presentation copy of the first published account in book form of the first exploration into the Port Phillip district. The designation on title-page Second Edition is considerably misleading as the First Edition of 1831 (what Bland describes in his Preface to the present volume as the first limited impression ) was evidently made up from preliminary printings in very few copies (Bland laments the lack of a supply of paper for its printing) and most of those few copies which have survived are incomplete. It is one of the legendary rarities of Australian exploration with only one or two copies in private hands, The South Australian library issued a facsimile of that edition in 1965 (reprinted 1971). Hume and Hovell s exploration was of vast importance as numerous significant discoveries were made including the Hume (later renamed the Murray), Tumut, Ovens and Goulburn Rivers, the Australian Alps, and vast tracts of fertile and well-watered country. Their reports at last dispelled the notion of Oxley that the land to the south was worthless and paved the way for the exlorations of Sturt and Mitchell which followed. Bland s work was edited from the journals of Hovell and Hume, neither of whom published accounts of their own until 1855 when Hume, stung into action by press reports which seemed to suggest that Hovell was taking all the credit for their discoveries, first published his Brief Statement of Facts... 13 Gaston Renard Fine and Rare Books 11 D. L. Welch, ***Author s presentation copy: stamped in gilt on the front board: Coln. Perceval C.B. 12th Regiment. From the Inventor. Ferguson, Ferguson lists two First Editions of 1843 (F & 3573), one of six pages royal octavo, (apparently usually without plates), and another which appears similar to the present work, but represented only in the National Library copy, and notes a third edition of 1867 (which, however, he does not list). Clearly an invention of significant importance for a country dependent for its economy on the export of wool. [with] Bland, William. LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY SIR CHARLES AUGUSTUS FITZ ROY, Governor-in-Chief of New South Wales, &c. &c. &c. From William Bland, M.C January 11, Sydney: Printed by T. Forster, 334, Pitt-street, North. Sydney; T. Forster; ***Stamped in gilt on the front board: Coln. Perceval C. B. 12th Regiment. Ferguson Bland comments on the financial state of the colony and the remedies proposed in England, such as a reduction of the drain upon the Land Fund from the colony, and revival of Transportation.Together, 6 works in 4 volumes, 8vo. Sydney; James Tegg [and others]; ***Similarly, but not identically bound in contemporary colonial presentation bindings, almost certainly executed for Bland by the Sydney binder Kern, and presented to Lt.-Colonel John Maxwell Perceval. The attribution of the bindings to Kern is based on the survival of similarly bound presentation copies of the Hume and Hovell account which contain Kern s ticket. Colonel Perceval took up command of the 1st Battalion of the 12th Regiment in 1854, during which year it arrived at Van Diemen s Land and served in Australia for six years.
