3 2 Angas, George French. SOUTH AUSTRALIA ILLUS TRATED. Impl. folio, First Edition; pp. [2](colour-illustrated lithographed title, dated 1846, verso blank), [2](typeset titlepage dated 1847, verso blank), [2](calligraphic litho-engraved Dedication to Queen Adelaide, verso blank), [iii]-iv(list of Subscribers), [4](Preface & General Remarks on the Aboriginal Inhabitants of South Australia); 60 superb hand-coloured litho plates, each with facing leaf of descriptive text (Plate 27 with 2 leaves); finely bound in half green morocco with marbled sides, with matching fitted slipcase by Aquarius; (small, unobtrusive stamp of the Zoological Society almost invisibly erased from two early leaves and present on a third; a few leaves with the faintest browning of extreme margins only); an exceptionally fine, unusually clean copy, the colours brilliant & full, with no sign of fading; rare. London; Thomas M Lean; ***A most attractive copy, both externally and internally, and one of the two outstanding substantial collections of early coloured views of Australia (the other being Joseph Lycett s Views in Australia, ), the work contains 41 fine topographical views (on 37 plates), of various parts of South Australia, 19 plates of the Aboriginal inhabitants, their dwellings and artefacts, 3 plates of insects and one of South Australian botany. A new species of Kangaroo is shown on one of the plates. The work is of great importance as a contemporary record of South Australia for, as the Author states in his Preface, With the hope of preserving time and life-like records of men and scenes, so quickly passing away, I have endeavoured by pictorial representation, to describe the most interesting and peculiar features of South Australia and its Aboriginal inhabitants. I have devoted my time and powers entirely to the accomplishment of this task, visiting all portions of the Colony, and making myself conversant with the manners and habits of native tribes whose existence is unknown to the world. The information portrayed on the Aborigines is particularly valuable. Two of the plates are by S. T. Gill - the view of Adelaide, and that showing the Departure of Captain Sturt, August 1844, on the Central Australian Expedition - these are particularly fine early views of the city - and have been sold separately for large sums. #14526 A$45,000.00

26 25 Duperrey, Louis Isidore. ATLAS. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, Libraire-Editeur, rue Hautefeuille, No Super royal folio; engraved title and 60 engraved plates, 59 of these in the most superb hand-colouring, some also partly printed in colours; (a short repaired tear to margin only of first plate, not affecting image; a couple of plates with light diffuse spotting; extreme margins of a few others lightly dust-soiled or mildly frayed); bound in quarter morocco, with papered sides, the original printed wrapper mounted on front board, together with an original livraison label; a fine, generally clean copy; rare. Paris; Arthus Bertrand; ***Ferguson 1069; Hill 2, No. 517; Hocken, page 42; Sabin 21353; Borba de Moraes, page 275. The work is one of the rarer French voyages and the plates include 9 of New Zealand and its inhabitants, 19 of New Guinea and the neighbouring islands, 10 of the Caroline Islands, and 14 superb plates of Tahiti and the Society Islands. Of the plates 39 were drawn by Lejeune & Chazal, 15 by Chazal alone, 2 by de Blosseville & Chazal, 3 by Duperrey & Chazal and 1 by Duperrey. The very fine engraving was done entirely by Ambroise Tardieu, both the engraving and the colouring is of the highest standard and these plates are amongst the finest ever produced, in any

27 country and at any time. The title-page also is a work of art, designed by C. F. Ermeler and engraved by Abel Malo. Duperrey was captain of the Uranie on de Freycinet s voyage, and in charge of hydrographic research on that expedition. He was appointed to command of the new expedition in 1822 and allocated the corvette La Coquille, with Dumont d Urville as second-in-command. The purpose of this new voyage was to be scientific and on the 11th August the ship left Toulon with a young crew, only Duperrey himself, Dumont d Urville and another officer being over 30. The expedition called first at Brazil and went then to the Falklands, where they saw the rock which had proved the undoing of the Uranie. After a short stay to repair the ship and make botanical and other observations, the Coquille rounded Cape Horn and called at Concepcion in Chile where the poverty of the inhabitants appalled Duperrey. The expedition then continued to Peru and into the Pacific to the Tuamotus where a new island was discovered and named Clermont-Tonnerre, but is now known as Reao. At Tahiti they found that European influences had had a profound effect on the natives, although some of the missionary puritanism was apparently only skin deep. After passing Niue the ship was affected by adverse weather and only after much backtracking did the expedition reach the Solomons from where they headed for Amboina in the Dutch East Indies, and thence to Timor. They next visited Port Jackson and then New Zealand where the Maoris were reported to be accomplished thieves and anxious to procure firearms with which to murder their compatriots. At Rotuma, however they found the natives more congenial if no less thievishly inclined. They made some new discoveries in the Gilbert Islands and more in the Carolines but the names assigned have not been retained. After sailing along the New Guinea coast and through the Indonesian islands to Surabaya which they left after two weeks the expedition returned via Mauritius, Bourbon and St. Helena where a romantic pilgrimage was made to Napoleon s residence, which was however in a bad state of repair. This fact however is not particularly evident in the fine plate of this building in this Atlas Histoire. Although the new geographical discoveries were not great, the hydrographic work was of a very high standard and corrected many errors on the earlier charts. The scientific achievements were no less important: meteorological observations of sea and air temperatures and atmospheric pressure were taken six times daily over the entire period of 31 months and important measurements of magnetic variation were made. As with the other French voyages a massive collection of specimens was brought back to France, including 300 geological samples, 1200 insects of which 450 were not previously available, as well as over 300 birds, mammals and reptiles, and nearly 300 fishes, 80 being new to science. The anthropological observations were also very extensive and the drawings of artefacts, weapons and clothing were particularly comprehensive, many of these being illustrated in the atlases, some of which are shown in this Atlas Histoire. #23368 A$19,500.00

Together 3 vols. text, 4to, 2-part atlas in 1 vol., royal 4to, and Navigation atlas 1 vol. folio. Paris; Imprimerie Imperiale [et] Royale; ***See Ferguson 449 (Historique), 536 (navigation atlas) and 603 (navigation text). Both the text and atlas of the Navigation and Geography are very rare and complete sets of the entire work are seldom encountered. The charts in the Atlases (both to the Navigation and to the Partie Historique) are mainly by de Freycinet, and the fine illustrations are by Lesueur and Petit. The plates consist of 5 coloured coastal views, natural history subjects (9 coloured), topographical views, native weapons, canoes, habitations, etc. (some coloured), and 10 portraits (4 coloured) of NAMED Aborigines by Nicolas-Martin Petit ( ). One of the folding topographical views is a fine plate of Sydney by Charles Alexandre Lesueur ( ). Francois Peron ( ), naturalist and historian, was first intended for the priesthood, but with the Revolution joined the army. He served on the Rhine, was wounded (losing an eye), captured, and on repatriation in 1794 was invalided out of the army. He studied natural history and gained an appointment in Baudin s expedition to the South Seas. He worked tirelessly in amassing specimens and information relative to the animal life of Australia and its environs, thus making a significant contribution to Australian zoology. On the return of the expedition Peron undertook the compilation of the history of the voyage; but ill-health forced him to abandon it half-way through, and it was completed by Louis de Freycinet ( ), an hydrographer and cartographer in the French Navy. As a result of his highly creditable work in the Baudin expedition he was appointed to the command of a circumnavigatory expedition (in L Uranie and La Physicienne) from 1816 to 1820, during which voyage he again visited the Australian coasts. The expedition was commanded by Nicolas Baudin, who died at Batavia on the way home. The purpose of the voyage was the thorough examination of the western and southern coasts of Australia, and especially to investigate a belief that a strait existed linking the southern sea with the Gulf of Carpentaria, thus dividing New Holland into two large islands. A six months stay at Sydney is fully described by Peron, embodying a valuable account of life in the early years of the settlement. Despite the failure of the expedition to complete its allotted tasks and the untimely death of its commander the scientific achievements were outstanding and many hundreds of plants were illustrated and described and in addition a collection of over eighteen thousand Zoological specimens was amassed, together with observations on numerous subjects - all this with a complement greatly reduced (both in scientific staff & crew) by desertion and illness! #13976 A$110,000.00
