(Alfred Zantzinger). Original Comic Art Featuring a Mad Hare and A Rooster. ill. A. Z. Baker (B. Baker). Good Circa Ink and watercolor on board featuring an angry looking hare with an umbrella and a rooster in a pond. The board is age-toned and chipped at edges, water stain on backside of board. Most likely drawn after Baker's return to the US after a few years spent in France based on the address written on the back of the drawing. Caught up in her dream, her eggs fall to the road and crumble. By the end, she realizes that she is quite content with what she has. Illustrated in color and black and white by the D'Aulaires. A cute little book (approx. 6"H by 3.5"W) with 6 full page color illustrations, balance in red & navy. Betty takes her Teddy bear to the shore and accidentally loses him to the waves. Fortunately, help is nearby and all ends well for Betty & Teddy. $ De Brunhoff, Jean. Histoire De Babar le Petit Elephant. Paris: Jardin Des Modes, (1931). 1st Ed. Folio. Good. Color illustrated boards with cloth spine, slight edge rubbing, wear to extremities, FFEP excised, shaky but a clean copy. A landmark in children's literature, prized for the brilliance of the artwork, meticulous production and direct text, the Babar books are a great asset for any collection. The story of Babar came into existence as a story told to the Brunhoff children, by their mother. Jean de Brunhoff was sickly and confined to a sanitorium, where he was able to paint the pictures and compose the text for the first Babar book. Michel de Brunhoff, Jean's brother, was an editor with Jardin des Modes and was immediately taken with his brother's elephant drawings. Thus, the first Babar book was born. (See Hurlimann pgs ). First Issue without the elephant logo on copyright page. This copy appears to have been signed by Laurent de Brunhoff, but we do not guarantee the signature after a side by side comparison of a known signature. $1, *54. DeWitt, C. H.
