1 1 Drilling & Marching Definition: a. To walk steadily and rhythmically forward instep with others. b. Anorganized walkorprocession bya groupof people for a specific cause. October 2017 Definition: Drilling & Marching a. Is the organised method of getting a group of Pathfinders from one place to another in the shortest space on time. Objectives of D&M Order: It helps maintain an organized unit. Morale: Training discipline and group unity. Enjoyment:Fun activity, promotes use of imagination. Fellowship:Helps one learn to take orders, and follow them. Physical Bearing: Helps in promoting an erect and upright bearing. 1

2 Objectives of D&M Rationale of D&M Leadership:Helps one learn to give orders and build confidence. Self Control: Pay attention to leader. Respect: Regard for the rights of others. Obedience:Learn to follow rules and regulations. A. Good marching develops group spirit and high morale. Everyone is working together, everyone is important and proud to belong. B. Drill and Marching does something for the Club that nothing else can, because everyone is responding in the same way, moving together, travelling in a common direction and having a common goal. 7 8 a. Formation: The arrangement of the individuals of a Pathfinder drill formation in any prescribed manner. b. Line: The formation in which the individuals are side by side of each other. c. Rank: A rank is a line that is only one individual in depth (side by side). d. Interval: An interval is the distance between persons standing next to each other. e. Column: A column is formed when people stand one behind one another. f. File: A file is a single column. g. Distance: Distance is the space between people within a column (front to back). h. Cover: The cover command is used to align yourself with the person in front of you while maintaining correct distance. 2

3 9 10 i. Flank: The right or left side of any formation from the point of view of someone within that formation. j. Cadence: The uniform rhythm in which a movement is executed, or the number of steps or counts per minute at which the movement is executed. k. Interval: The lateral space between individuals on the same alignment. l. Depth: The ground occupied by a body of Pathfinders from front to rear. m. Marker: The Pathfinder at the front rank, right flank. n. Blank File: A front rank Pathfinder without a middle and/or rear rank Pathfinder. The Blank File will always be the third from the left in Columns of Two or second from left in Columns of Three. 11 The Parade Square/Line Call 12 o. Marching plays its part in drill as a means of working together; a Pathfinder group marching with precision is well disciplined and has high morale. 2. A common cause of bad marching is the stepping of pace more than that taken by the shortest Pathfinder on parade. 7

If they are standing at ease when the command Quick MARCH or ON- Parade is given they will come to attention before stepping off. In all instances they will step off with the left foot leading.
