2 For this project you will create a Time Capsule. The project will be your final grade for the historical fiction unit. Please use the rubric as a guide for your project. There is an example provided that you may refer to when assembling your project.

3 WHAT IS A TIME CAPSULE? A time capsule is a box for storing objects. These objects let the people in the future know what is going on in the present. You may use a shoebox or any other type of small container (no larger than an average shoebox or oatmeal container) for this project. You should decorate your container to represent your historical fiction book. There are several pieces that must be included in your time capsule.

4 REQUIREMENTS

5 ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR TIME CAPSULE: 1. Your name 2. Title and author of your book 3. Your cover/design should contain a quotation from the story as well as illustrations and/or artwork representing the story s main idea. Be creative!

6 ON THE INSIDE OF YOUR TIME CAPSULE: 1. Six (6) objects related to the book that depicts the main story elements. a. Two (2) objects should represent your character(s). b. Two (2) objects should connect to your historical era or event. c. One (1) object should show the setting of the story. d. One (1) object should represent the plot of the story (main problem/challenge, solution). 2. Written description for each object. 3. Your objects should be a mix of photographs, handmade or found items, and historical artifacts (maps, articles, stories, etc).

7 WRITTEN DESCRIPTION GUIDELINES You need to write a description for each of the six objects in your time capsule. Descriptions can be typed and pasted onto a notecard, or handwritten in pen on a notecard. Each description must include the following items: 1. Title/Heading (What the object is and what it represents: character, historical era, setting, or plot) 2. At least five (5) sentences about how the object represents either the character(s), plot, or historical era in your story. Your description should show us that you can distinguish between historical fact and fiction in your story.
