3 LESSON 1 Index Worksheet Fill out the answers to the following questions as you listen to Mrs. Ware s and Mrs. Blaher s lesson. 1. Where in a book do you find an index? 2. What does an index list? 3. An index is arranged in order. Use the following example to answer the next 2 questions: War of 1812, 8: Battle of Tippecanoe, 4:684; , 164 Harrison, William, 4: In the example above, if I was looking for information on the War of 1812, in what book in the set would I need to look? Between which pages would I find the article about the War of 1812? 5. How many books in the set have information on the Battle of Tippecanoe? What numbers are they? 6. Why are the Battle of Tippecanoe and Harrison, William listed under the War of 1812? 7. If I was to look up George Washington in the index of a book, would I look under G for George or W for Washington? Use the following example to answer the next question: Wall, the. See Vietnam Veterans Memorial 8. I wanted to find information about the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC, and looked up The Wall in this index. What does the index tell me I should look up instead to find the information? 3
4 Reference Book This is one of several worksheets. We try to have one for each student in the class. 1. Go to the Reference section of the library and find the book listed in the box below. On what pages can you find information in volume 2 on Louisiana? Turn to those pages and answer the following questions: What is the title of the article? Who decided to purchase the Louisiana territory? France had lost most of its North American empire by the end of what war? What was that war called in North America? 4. Turn back to the Index. Look up Plains. What do you think see Great Plains means? 4
