3 LESSON 1 Index Worksheet Fill out the answers to the following questions as you listen to Mrs. Ware s and Mrs. Blaher s lesson. 1. Where in a book do you find an index? 2. What does an index list? 3. An index is arranged in order. Use the following example to answer the next 2 questions: War of 1812, 8: Battle of Tippecanoe, 4:684; , 164 Harrison, William, 4: In the example above, if I was looking for information on the War of 1812, in what book in the set would I need to look? Between which pages would I find the article about the War of 1812? 5. How many books in the set have information on the Battle of Tippecanoe? What numbers are they? 6. Why are the Battle of Tippecanoe and Harrison, William listed under the War of 1812? 7. If I was to look up George Washington in the index of a book, would I look under G for George or W for Washington? Use the following example to answer the next question: Wall, the. See Vietnam Veterans Memorial 8. I wanted to find information about the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC, and looked up The Wall in this index. What does the index tell me I should look up instead to find the information? 3

4 Reference Book This is one of several worksheets. We try to have one for each student in the class. 1. Go to the Reference section of the library and find the book listed in the box below. Before you open the book, answer this question: Which of the following research questions do you think will be covered in this book? Circle the correct answer. A. What is life like in India? B. How many planets are in the solar system? C. How do airplanes fly? D. What kinds of people moved westward to settle in Texas? 3. Open the book and turn to the Index. Look up Louisiana. On what pages can you find information in volume 2 on Louisiana? Turn to those pages and answer the following questions: What is the title of the article? Who decided to purchase the Louisiana territory? France had lost most of its North American empire by the end of what war? What was that war called in North America? 4. Turn back to the Index. Look up Plains. What do you think see Great Plains means? 4

5 5. Turn to the Title Page and answer the following questions: What is the title of this book? What is the name of the company that published the book? In what city was this book published? (Hint: Pick the first city on the list.) When was this book published (copyright year)? (Hint: You may have to look on the back of the title page to answer this question.) 6. Click on the Catalog tab at the top of the screen to start your search. Task One 1. In the Search box, type Penguins. DO NOT PRESS ENTER! 2. Click the Subject search button. 3. How many books does the library own that have penguins as the subject? (Hint: Look for the number near the top of your results list.) 4. What are the Title and Author of the second book on the list? (Hint: Look for the number near the top of your results list.) 4. Is this number larger or smaller than the number of books that have penguins as the subject? Why do you think the number is different from the subject search? 5. Are all of the books on the results list about penguins? 6. True or False (circle the correct choice): A keyword search is a way to narrow a search. Task Three 1. In the search box, type Candy. DO NOT PRESS ENTER! 2. Click on the Keyword search button. 3. World Wide Web: The worldwide collection of pages, digital photographs, files, videos, and animations you can access over the. Browser: A program for viewing, pages. Link: A pointer to another page, also known as a hyperlink or. Database: A collection of information that is organized so that it can easily be accessed, managed, and updated.
