1 2013 Grand Canyon Reader Award Quick and Easy Lesson Ideas Created by the GCRA Committee Art & Max by David Wiesner (2010) Picture Books Work with your Art teacher and have the students create their own art project. Talk about the various media used in the book. Use Story Mountains to have the students create their own story. (See link on our website) Round Robin Drawing- have the students draw a simple item (a line for example) and have them switch with another student and continue to the picture until all students have drawn on the picture and it has been returned to the original artist. Other books to use with this book: Purple, Green and Yellow by Robert Munsch, Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert and Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. Children Make Terrible Pets by Peter Brown (2010) Ask the questions: What else could Lucy have for pet? What Terrible Pet would you have? If you were a pet, what would your owner say about you? Create a graph on personal pets and/or classroom pets. Use this poem by Brad Bagert Choices Daddy agrees I need a pet, And Mom, you know it's true, So I made a little list An elephant, a whale, A tiger with a tail, An eagle to soar in the air. A horse, a donkey, A gorilla, a monkey, A camel, a boar, or a bear. Or...a cuddly little kitten, I'll like whatever you do. By Shel Silverstein and The Class Pet From The Pet Lagoon by Mike Thaler.

Perfect Square by Michael Hall (2011) Works with the art teacher to have the students create their own square project. Use shapes other than squares oval, circle, rectangle, triangle, etc. Other books to use with this book: An Eye For Color: The Story of Josef Albers by Natasha Wing and When A Line Bends-- a Shape Begins by Rhonda Gowler Greene. The Plot Chickens by Mary Jane and Herm Auch (2009) Have the students pick another animal to write a story about. Talk about parts of a book (index, glossary, etc.) Other books to use with this book: Look At My Book: How Kids Can Write and Illustrate Terrific Books by Loreen Leedy, Click Clack Moo, Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin and Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters From Obedience School by Mark Teague. Sneezy Louise by Irene Breznak, illustrated by Janet Pedersen (2009) Questions to ask: When you re sick, you have a bad day too- correct? What kinds of things make your sick day better? Talk about onomatopoeia, have the students give examples. Other books to use with this book: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst and Ah-Choo! By Margery Cuyler. Sophie Peterman Tells The Truth! By Sarah Weeks, illustrated by Robert Neubecker (2009) Other books to use with this book: Darcy and Gran Don t Like Babies by Jane Cutler and Love That Baby! A Book About Babies For New Brothers, Sisters, Cousins, and Friends by Kathryn Lasky.

3 Tadpole Rex by Kurt Cyrus (2008) Questions to ask: What other animals were around before dinosaurs? What animals lived with dinosaurs? Have students write their own story with another animal or a made up one. How did they survive? Work with the vocabulary words: polliwog, horsetails, desperate, corked, tattered, primeval, ambush, camouflage, slumbered metamorphosis and more. Discuss onomatopoeia, for example the word bloob, where would you be if you heard that sound? What would you be doing? Other books to use with this book: any non-fiction tadpole or dinosaur book. Tell The Truth, B.B. Wolf by Judy Sierra, illustrated by J. Otto Siebold (2010) Questions to ask: What else could he have done to help? What else could the BB stand for in BB Wolf s name? Create another remodeled fairy tale using a familiar fairy tale. Other books to use with this book: Mind Your Manners, B. B. Wolf by Judy Sierra, The True Story of The Three Pigs by Jon Scieszka, Believe Me, Goldilocks Rocks! By Nancy Loewan, The Three Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas, The Three Little Javelina s by Susan Lowell and other fairy tale. These Hands by Margaret H. Mason, illustrated by Floyd Cooper (2010) Have students cut out tracings of their own hands, what can your hands do? Use primary source documents from the Library of Congress of people working or pictures of segregation and of advertisements for white workers only. Analyze the pictures in the book for facial expression, focal point, the objects in the picture and what assumptions can be made about the character. Create a short civil rights leader biography research project using a graphic organizer. Other books to use with this book: The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson, If A Bus Could Talk by Faith Ringgold, Martin s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, Sister Anne s Hands by Marybeth Lorbiecki and When Marian Sang by Pam Munoz Ryan. *The Pirate of Kindergarten by George Ella Lyon (2010) Questions to ask: Do you where glasses? Do you know someone that wears glasses or has a vision problem? How do they adapt? Do you know people that have devices they use to help them see, read, walk, talk or hear? Make eye patches for the students to try in the classroom or library. Talk about what they experienced. Other books to use with this book: any non-fiction book about vision and seeing.

Have students write and illustrate their own unlikely math problem book. Use the authors website for additional activities. Have the students write their own multiplication book. Have students write a persuasive letter about their favorite classroom pet. Create a research project for finding out the perfect classroom pet. Hot Diggity Dog: The History of the Hot Dog by Adrienne Sylver (2010) Questions to ask: What is your favorite food? Where did it come from? Find a world map and map out hot dog places. Build your own hotdog (out of construction paper); display your invented hot dog. What would you name it? What is the recipe? Graph out favorite hot dog toppings with students. Find videos of the weinermobile to watch.

5 It s Snowing! By Gail Gibbons (2011) Questions to ask: Does it snow where we live? What clothes do you need for the snow? Take a class poll on who has played in the snow. Use Google Earth to show pictures of the places in the world with snow (see pg ). Create snowflakes out of white papers. Look up pictures of real snowflakes online. Other books to use: Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London, Thomas Snowsuit by Robert Munsch and Snowballs by Lois Ehlert. Meet the Howlers! By April Pulley Sayre (2010) Questions to ask: What other animals live in the rain forest? How do they adapt? Where do other monkeys live? What other noises to animals make? Do you know any other animals whose name is the sound they make? Watch videos of howler monkeys online. Compare and contract howler monkeys with other monkeys. Nic Bishop Lizards by Nic Bishop (2010) Questions to ask: What kinds of animal defenses are there? Do a KWL chart on lizards before you read the book. Show pictures of different lizards to the class. Draw your own lizard. What special characteristics does it have? Find videos on lizards in the book. Compare and contrast the different lizards. Orangutans Are Ticklish: Fun Facts From An Animal Photographer by Steve Grubman with Jill Davis (2010) Have students create their own animal page with unusual facts. Show a video of an orangutan being tickled online or other animals from the book. Discuss animal adaptations. Someone Used My Toothbrush: And Other Bathroom Poems by Carol Diggory Shields (2010)** Work with the vocabulary in the books. Ask the question, what would you do if someone used your toothbrush?

6 This Tree Counts! By Alison Formento (2010) Questions to ask: What about cacti and Arizona trees? How are they different? Have the students grow their own tree. Pick a tree and have the students research what kinds of animals need that tree and why. Use the authors website for additional ideas. Other books to use: Cactus Hotel by Brenda Guiberson, and The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Yucky Worms by Vivian French (2009) Show a video about worms. Find some live worms. Bring in a Dirt Cake with gummy worms. Other books to use: Dirt by Steve Tomecek. **Experiment With Rocks by Sophie Lockwood (2011) Discuss the scientific method. Show pictures of the Grand Canyon and other sedimentary rocks and fossils. Do the experiments in the classroom or library.
