1 Students Summer Reading Packet This packet includes a choice of one required reading book and one free choice book. Also, all students are required to complete ONE required activity due on the first week of school. It also includes suggested books, resources to access the books, suggested activities and a summer reading cover page. The books can be found in the library, online, at thrift stores and bookstores. A minimum of one required book and one free choice should be completed. The project is due the first week of school. Please note that we encourage all students to read as many books as possible over the summer months. *Students who are learning English may choose to read and/or listen to a translated version of a chosen text or a version of the text in their first/native language. Students are expected to complete their grade level assignments. Students entering grade 4 are expected to read a minimum of two texts over the summer: 1. A book written by Kate DiCamillo 2. A book by the author of your choice These projects were designed to promote student creativity, engagement, and fun with reading! Students have the choice of selecting from a variety of projects that they will bring with them to school. ***Listed below are the top 6 books by Kate DiCamillo suggested by your fourth grade teachers: 1. Mercy Watson (any in series) 2. Because of Winn-Dixie 3. Flora and Ulysses 4. Tale of Despereaux 5. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane 6. The Tiger Rising *Alternative audio and visual options are available through the Weymouth Public Library. Students should make a wise choice when selecting a book, looking for a title that best suits their reading level. When looking for a book that is at the just right, here is a suggestion: Use the 5 finger test- Open a book and turn to a random page. As you read, put up a finger for each word you DO NOT know.

3 4 th Grade Summer Reading Project Selections Choose one of the books you ve read and complete one of the 7 projects listed below. 1) Write a song that tells about your story. You may sing your song with or without music. This song can be pop, country, rap; the choice is yours! Be prepared to perform this for the class or have someone video your performance. Bring in this video on DVD, on a flash drive, or it to your teacher on the first day of school. 2) Write a new ending for your story. This new ending should be at least one page in length and be a logical continuation to the plot of the story. 3) Make a video recording. Make a recording with a reenactment of one of your favorite events from the story. You may use friends and family members as actors. Include a narration of a summary of the book and your opinion of it. Please copy the video onto a DVD or flash drive, or it to your teacher on the first day of school. 4) Complete a book report. How you compose your book reports is up to you, but remember to include the following information depending if you are reading fiction or non-fiction: Fiction -Setting, Characters, Plot -Climax of story -Problem and solution of story Non-fiction -Main characters or topic of text -What was the author teaching you? -What is the greatest problem faced in the book and how is it overcome? -What non-fiction text features did you find? 5) Write a continuation of your story. What happens in the new next chapter? Be creative and be sure your response is at least 1 page in length. 6) Write a comic book. Your comic should tell about your favorite part of the book. The comic should have a minimum of six scenes or sections. Include comic-style illustrations in either black and white or color. Include dialogue bubbles that tell the plot of the story. 7) Create a life-size portrait. This portrait should be one of the main characters from your book. The portrait should include a written piece that tells about the character. The piece should also include information about events, character traits, or conflicts in the book that involve the character.
