1 Mrs. Norman s 2017 Unit Focus For Fahrenheit 451 Over the course of this novel, many of the Louisiana State Standards will be covered and assessed. Our focus standards, however, are RL.2 and RL.3. These will drive our focus as we read and learn from the futuristic society that Ray Bradbury painted for us so many years ago. RL Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. RL Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. Here s how we will primarily master each of the above standards. 1. Annotations (active reading) 2. The Evolution of Montag (group project) 3. The theme tracker handout (individual work overlaps with annotations) 4. Culminating writing task based on theme tracker handout

2 .1. annotations (50 PTS) Annotation Guide What you are annotating for: Suggested Notation: Marginal Note Essential Theme Topics ET1, ET2, ET3, ET4 Write out the author s point of view on Literary Devices (foreshadowing, symbolism, irony, allegory, tension, etc.) Author s Craft (word choice, figurative language, imagery) Comprehension Questions?? Write out the specific question Essential theme topic 1: Knowledge / Reading Schedule: Ignorance Essential theme topic 2: Censorship Essential theme topic 3: Technology Essential theme topic 4: Books/ Reading. For the reading schedule, the date beside the page numbers indicates the day you would need to read that for homework if that part is not read together in class. For example, 9/19 for homework that night you need to make sure you read pages and are ready for discussion or assessment for 9/20. Underline or highlight Box or circle. 9/1- pg /5 pg in class HW pg /7 pg in class 9/8- HW pg /12- pg /13- pg /14 pg /15 pg /18- pg /19- pg /20- pg this particular theme topic Write out the EFFECT of the device; DON T just point it out 9/22- pg /25- pg /26- pg /27- pg /29- pg Write out the EFFECT of the device; DON T just point it out Characterization Stick figure How has the character changed, How has the character another character

3 The Evolution of Montag Name: Instructions: Guy Montag, the protagonist of Fahrenheit 451, changes and grows throughout the text. You will be analyzing these changes. Your task is to create a poster that is a timeline of his changes. It should be split into the following six sections: 1. The Introduction of Montag (pages 1-13) 2. Montag Influenced by Clarisse (pages 13-44) 3. Montag Grows Sick (45-73) 4. Montag Becomes a Student (pages 74-97) 5. Montag Rebels (pages ) 6. Montag Finds Fulfilment (pages ) Requirements for Timeline: For each of the six stages listed above Draw a picture for each of the stages. Include the label (from the list above) and write a brief description of the picture you drew. Write a brief summary of that section of the text (3-5 sentences) Choose at least 2 quotes from each section. Make sure to choose quotes that show him evolving. Write at least 2 sentences explaining how Montag changed in this section. Make a list of character traits of Montag during each stage. Scoring Guide: Used Time Wisely in Poster Complete (all 6 stages) & Attractive Picture for Each Stage Complete Summary for Each Stage 2 Quotes for Each Stage 2 Sentences about his Change for Each Stage List of Character Traits for Each Stage Important Information Due Date: Partner(S):

4 Name: Class Hr: Theme Tracker directions: Theme Tracker pg# For this handout, you will need to choose 2 for author s craft, 2 literary devices, and 1 literary element to track throughout the novel. You will need at least 3 entries EACH for the 5 chosen categories. This will be for a grade and will be tremendous help for your essay. This laying the foundation for your culminating writing task (essay), so the more work you do on this end, the easier it will be to write it at the end of the novel. Any copying of ideas from the internet, another student, or any other source will most likely result in a 0. The Big Question: How does Ray Bradbury use craft, devices, and elements to shape the themes of Fahrenheit 451? Theme Topics: Ignorance/Knowledge, Censorship, Technology, and Reading/Books. ( eventually, you will turn these topics into statements about the topic). Craft, Devices, and Elements Author s Craft Literary Devices Literary Elements Word choice Imagery Figurative language Foreshadowing Symbolism Irony Allegory Tension Tone Plot structure Setting Point of view Characterization
