Script Title & version # 1.1 Page 1 Library Instructional Videos, Short Video #1 Joe Vandal Finds Books at the UI Library Kristin Henrich & Diane Prorak khenrich@uidaho.edu; prorak@uidaho.edu Examples: Scene & Shot VIDEO FADE IN Exterior beauty shot of library AUDIO MUSIC UP & UNDER (TBD, Creative Commons) Title: Joe Vandal Finds a Book in the University of Idaho Library 1.1 WS establishing shot of JV at workstation from behind. 1.2 Cut to CU of head shaking in hands with papers everywhere -noticeably frustrated CU of paper in Joe s hand as Joe points to assignment directions What s wrong, Joe? You look frustrated Ahh doing some homework huh? What seems to be the problem? Find one book on your topic but you ve never found books in this library before! What are you going to do? 1.3 Cut back to WS of Joe at workstation more head on for the A-Ha moment WS to snap-zoom in to Reference desk sign/attendant PROP: Assignment with these details. Ask the reference desk for help? What a good idea, Joe. They can quickly help you find the perfect book for your topic, 2.1 Joe walks into same shot, blocking our view NARRATOR Joe, move we can t see! What are you doing? UI Video Production Center Form Page 1 Script Joe Vandal Finding Books_VPCv02 final
Script Title & version # 1.1 Page Cut to OTS shot of desk worker, zoom in to monitor, dissolve to Screen shot of home page ( with screen graphic (arrow) to show where catalog is on main page] NARRATOR Oh, I see you re using the library s catalog, located on the library website, to find a book on your topic [Screenshot: Show close-up of record, with call # highlighted] WS of Joe excited for finding book (high five); Joe hears Narrator, stops, shrugs CU of Joe writing call number down pulls hand away to reveal the number Close-up of paper with call # written on it Joe pointing to paper and shrugging The perfect book! But Joe, how will you find it in this library, which is the largest in the state? The call number is the address that tells you where the book will be in the library. Or Use the call number! It s like a books address it tells you where the book will be in the library! Underneath that: A-G = 4, H-Z = 3 Close-up of JV finger showing right range on blue worksheet WS of Joe holding both his note with the call number and the blue bookmark. CU of papers overlapping? Using one to point out important info on blue sheet. Ah, smart move, Joe. Look at the first letter of the call number and match it to the blue bookmark. This will tell you what floor your book will be on. It also tells you what general subject your book will be about in this case Medicine UI Video Production Center Form Page 2 Script Joe Vandal Finding Books_VPCv02 final
Script Title & version # 1.1 Page PAN across to show what floor the section is on. CUT TO Shot of JV getting in elevator, waving bye to camera Music? Looks like we re going to the third floor! Elevator doors closing CUT TO WS shot of Elevator doors opening on 3(same framing as shot prior?) Cut to CU of Joe s waist up looking completely bewildered; Cut back to WS of 3 rd floor bookshelves Joe this looks intimidating! How are you going to find your book in the middle of all these other books? Cut back to MW of Joe for the Ah-ha! Moment SNAP zoom in to floor map from Joe s perspective Show JV walking towards floor map maybe unnecessary timing wise Close up shot of actual floor map / kiosk use graphic maybe CU of handwritten call Number on paper in Joes hand Dissolve back to floor map, highlight section Good thinking, Joe. These maps will show you where your book is located on the floor, so you can find it more easily Let s see, Joe our call # begins with R, which means we need to head to this section MW shot of Joe walking towards camera looking up at tabs, zooming out as he approaches Show tabs at top of rows to show he is going in the right direction Show wide shot of side labels to give context MUSIC If the tabs on the top of the shelves are any indication, I think we re headed in the right direction, Joe! UI Video Production Center Form Page 3 Script Joe Vandal Finding Books_VPCv02 final
Script Title & version # 1.1 Page 4 4.3/4.5 Maybe a CU also Cut back to the zooming out shot, Joe stops, looks down POV angle looking at Joe's hand holding paper Cut to shot of labels on the sides of the rows, use highlights in Post to point out narration 4.8 Show wide shot visual of wall of books (PN section on 3 rd floor), with sections and directional arrows highlighted with graphic effects 5.1 MW of scanning each individual book, pauses, camera for directions in post, rack focus to freeze frame beneath, graphics on top Show Joe scanning wall of books like, fine, this shelf, but? Graphics 5.2 Modify 3 slides (#28,29,30) in Finding Books Slideshow Adapt/build graphics and highlights for video segment here Joe, keep an eye on these labels; the number range on each tells which books are on each shelf Stop Joe! Here we are. Your call #...what was it again? That s right. RD97. Your call number falls between this range; RC564-RJ216. That means your book will be on the same side of the shelf as the label in this case, the left. The books are arranged left to right in small sections. If you look closely, you can see the metal brackets that delineate each range. Joe, Joe wait. Remember how the call number was the address of the book? Here s how you interpret it. You already found the first two letters, which go in alphabetical order. Now look for the number before the decimal as a whole number. For this one, you have to go to the 90s not the 9s. Once you find the RD97s, then everything after the decimal is read piece by piece. In this case, you need to find RD97.S. UI Video Production Center Form Page 4 Script Joe Vandal Finding Books_VPCv02 final
Script Title & version # 1.1 Page ECU of Joes finger as he scans books and stop on his MW shot of JV pulling spine out of shelf WS of JV doing victory dance with book in hand Then find RD97.S6888. VANDAL FIGHT SONG / VICTORY MUSIC? Good work, Joe! You ve found your book! Panning shot down row at title level to show examples - at end of pan, grabs one more. MWS of Joe standing back up and giving thumbs up to camera MUSIC But wait, Joe. Even though your assignment only requires one book, you can find other, similar books by looking to the left and right of your book. These might not have shown up in the catalog but might still be useful. 5.8 MW shot of Joe confused looking at camera WS of Joe walking up to desk, CU of Joe handing card to worker, MW of Joe at counter collecting his books/card, walks back towards his workstation, waves. Now what? Just take your book down to the circulation desk on the first floor and use your Vandal card to check it out! Alright, Joe. You ve got the book needed for your assignment now writing the paper is up to you! Graphic 6.4 Graphic - Vandal Card = Library Card Screen shot of library homepage with contact us sidebar highlighted If you need additional help, please visit our website or visit the reference desk UI Video Production Center Form Page 5 Script Joe Vandal Finding Books_VPCv02 final
