The central idea of this text is that most Vikings, contrary to popular belief, were very skillful, hardworking people, and not cruel, ruthless marauders. One piece of evidence that supports the central idea of the text is at the beginning of the story in lines 1 through 21. The author discusses archeological evidence indicating that most Vikings lived typical communal lives of the time. They stayed home to tend farms, raise, cattle, hunt and fish. The author also provided descriptions of Vikings engaging in recreational activities such as playing, swimming, skiing, fencing, running, wrestling, and training falcons to hunt wild birds and animals. The text states, From findings at various archaeological sites, we know that the Vikings also had simple wind instruments. Pipes made from hallowed out horns were unearthed. The prefix un- means not. When something is unearthed, it is taken out of the ground and is not in the earth anymore. Much of the work of archaeologists involves digging into the ground to uncover what time has buried. Through a variety of sources such as excavations, sagas, runes, and writings, a great deal has been learned about the unique Viking culture. Pages 471 and 472 describe one of their communities. From paragraphs 4-5 on page 471 through paragraphs 1-6 on page 472, the reader learns how archeologists discovered towns where craftsman lived, making and selling their wares. Merchant Vikings also lived in towns selling goods they brought back from Germany, France, England and Constantinople. Outside of town, in the countryside, lived farmers that raised crops such as corn, peas, cabbage, barley and oats. They raised cattle for meat and milk to make butter and cheeses. The reader learns, too, of their large group family structure. They included husband and wife, their children, their sons wives and children (daughters were expected to leave home and live with husband s family) as well as grandparents.
