Edition Area 3. Publication & Distribution Area 4. Physical Description Area 5. Series Area 6. Notes Area 7. Standard ing or Terms of Availability area TRACING: It is the record of additional entries given in the main entry itself. Important Pages of Book: 1. Title Page: It indicates title of the book, author name, name / place of publisher 2. Back of Title Page: Indicates Copyrights, ISBN 3. Half Title Page: Indicates Series, editor of series, series no. 4. Preliminary Pages: They are in the beginning of the book and written in ROMAN Numerals like I, ii, iii 5. Text Pages: They are written in INDO-ARABIC numerals like 1,2,5 Important Notes: 1. We don t write in main entry about first edition. 2. The second line heading section will start from 3 rd indention. 3. We use capital alphabet at the start of every new area or if there is any proper noun. 4. Unnecessary details in publishers name and author name should be deleted. e.g. S. Chand & Sons S. Chand Padam Sri / Dr./ Mr. /Prof. /Rohit Jaiswal Rohit Jaiswal
2 5. If height or width is given in fraction, it will be written as next full no. e.g cm 23 cm. 6. If the width of the book is less than half of its height or width is more than height of the book; both height & width will be written, separated by a multiplication sign. e.g. (hxw) 23 x 10 cm, 23x24 cm 7. Honorary Degrees / Titles etc. of an individual are not used in catalog, we use only surname & forename in catalogue. 8. If place of publication is not given, we write [s.l.] s.l. = Sine Loco, means No Place 9. If name of publisher is not given, we write [s.n.] s.n. = Sine Nomine, means no publisher 10. If both name & place of publisher is not given, we write [s.l. : s.n.] 11. If the year of publication is not given, we write the decade / century by our imagination in square brackets with question mark. e.g. [19?] It means the book might have been published in 20 th century. e.g. [196?] It means the book might have been published in seventies of 20 th century. 12. If two series is given, both the series will be written one after another in separate circular brackets. e.g. 13. If we are writing in entry anything extra from our side, which is not given in the title page or any other pages of the book, we shall write it in square brackets. e.g. [and], [by] etc. Three (3) Author Case: If 3 authors are given, main entry will be made under the name of the first author.
3 More than Three (3) Author Case: 1. i. If there are more than three (3) authors or corporate bodies as authors and none of them is represented as principle author, main entry will be prepared under the title. ii. Principle author can be recognized by typographical differences in their names. iii. In such a case, added entry will be prepared under the name of first author. In the statement of responsibility area, the name of first author will be written in natural sequence followed by [et al.] 2. If one of the authors is given as principle author, main entry will be prepared under the name of the principle author with added entry under the name of the first author. 3. If principle author is the first author, NO added entry will be made under the first author.
4 Pseudonym Case: 1. If both the real name and pseudonym are given, we make main entry under the name of author written first in the sequence. In library situation, we have to find out that under which name, the author is more identifiable and main entry will be made under that name. 2. If it is mentioned that author is more identifiable under real name, we make main entry under the real name. 3. A see reference entry will be made in such a case Jt. PSEUDONYMS Case: 1. Two reference entries will be made. Multi-Volume Case: Case: I 1. One Title, Same Author 2. One common title, same author, but separate title of each volume 3. One common title, but each volume will have separate author and title Contents: Full information will be written Partial Contents: Only some portion of information will be written. 1. In 2 vol., if pages are not given in continuous no., we write e.g. 2 v. (xii, 310 ; ix, 410), If it is in the continuous no, we write 2 v. (xii, 500p.) 2. In 3 vol., if pages are not in continuous no., we write 3 v. 3. In 3 vol., if pages are given continuously, we write 3 v. (xii, 2560 p.)
5 Note: There are 3 methods to know the real name of author - Later editions of his/her work - In critical works - Reference Sources Tracing Section: The sequence of tracing section will remain same as it was written after Title under headingline. If along with year of reprint is given, the year of reprint will be written as the year of publication. / = stroke / diagonal slash / oblique No added entry will be made by name of editor of a series. Bibliography Information will be written in note section. If series no. is given in roman numerals, we will have to convert it in Indo Arabic numerals while making entry. Collection with Collective Title: A collection with collective title will be entered under title and not under the name of compiler or editor. In AACR-2 practice, Main Entry is never prepared under the name of editor or compiler, even in the case when the work is not a collection with collective title and having the name of editor or compiler in another place, Main Entry will be prepared under Title. Collection without Collective Title: If it is the case of collection without collective title, Main Entry will be made under the author of title which comes first in the collection.
