1 West Brooke Curriculum High School World History World History, English, Physical Science, and Math A manual written for the teenagers of Jehovah s Witnesses By Jennifer Westbrook

2 This High School Manual can be used for any grade in the 9-12 range if your student needs to cover World History, English, Physical Science, and Math. Meeting Prep. And Service- This schedule is to keep up with meeting preparation for the weekly night Meeting. The Watchtower lesson the student is responsible to get it done before meeting. Our service day is on Wednesday but it can be any weekday. (just date that column the date you go out in service)- the student should record the hours they went out in service, this will be good to include in his/her permanent record and can count toward speech (English), or community service. Read the text together and a few pages out of the yearbook. All of this can count towards your English credit. Including talks/demonstrations given at our weekly night meeting. According to the school we have used to track credits you can t use just this for an English credit because then it would give you one credit in Bible not in English. So I always included literature and book reports, and essays updated to new workbook layout. 1 Credit Bible (or towards your English Credit) Math- Teaching Textbooks Algebra I 1 Credit Math World History A Little History of the World: Illustrated Edition by E.H. Gombrich Educator s guide Insight on the Scriptures See The Good Land Brochure Bound Volumes or WT cd-rom 1 Credit in World History World Geography Some map activities are included related to A Little History of the World, and you will study See the Good Land Brochure. If you would like to count an additional ½ to 1 credit in World Geography this year consider adding the book World History Map Activities by Walch You might also like to incorporate this free Geography course: (thank you Amy) 1/2 to 1 Credit in World Geography

3 English Grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and hours from Bible lessons if you do the minimum from the reading list. If your student is an avid reader and reads at least 12 books for the school year with sufficient writing/book reports then you can count one credit in English and one credit in Bible. You can require your student to practice Note-taking for the Public Talk and Assemblies. Spelling optional this year, only if needed; Sequential Spelling level 7 or Adult or here is a list: Note: if your student is an avid reader, writes well and enough you may not need grammar or vocabulary for grades Wordly Wise 3000 Book 9, 10, 11, or 12 Answer Key Easy Grammar Ultimate Grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 Teacher Edition contains reproducible student pages and answers Student book just contains student pages Optional Resource: Wordsmith Craftsman by Janie Cheaney (for 10th grade and up) the student learns to branch out, using writing skills for communication, organization and reasoning. 7 Week 1 Notes: Note: not every week will have notes, only when needed. Reading- choose books from the list or other related Egypt books, or any High School level novel to read. Fill in the title and author under Reading Selection section of your grid. Literature Writing Ideas for the two Historical Fictions: Mara, Daughter of the Nile, and The Golden Goblet: Book report. Chart character study pick two characters in a story to compare and contrast. Find the Climax of the story and write a page. Write a page on the Setting of the story. Or work with your literature books History Notes*- This year you will be studying World History- which is a lot to cover in one year, I will give suggestions on books we supplemented with, choose as many as you like. Use a notetaking method of study for World History you can use a ordinary notebook to write lists, timelines, notes, reports, etc. in. or you can use notebooking pages many can be found online or you can use History Scribe. You may remember studying this in 6 th grade but, let s review: It did always seem difficult to match up secular dates with Biblical therefore you should refer to the timeline at the bottom of the brochure The Bible What is its Message? for an accurate Biblical Timeline. This is especially true for secular timelines referring to Ancient Egypt. Look up information on this difference in volume one of the Insight on the Scriptures volume 1 book under the topic Chronology: Egyptian Chronology and Problems of Egyptian Chronology on page 450.* Before we begin let s look at the time frame we are in, if you will turn to page 252 of your Revelation Its Grand Climax at Hand! book you will see a diagram of The Succession of Seven World Powers. Please make a photo copy of this (if you can) and glue it into your notebook, if not at least write it as a list. See also the chart on pages of 6/15/2012 Watchtower. Egypt Assyria Babylon Medo-Persia Greece Rome Anglo-America Timelines can be fun to do, I would like for you to keep a timeline this year that you add to as you go along, you can break it up into the different world powers. This can be as simple as you like or as

8 complex as you like. Research some different ways to keep a time line or a Centuries Book. Begin laying out what you plan to use for your time line so that you can easily add to it throughout the year. You can use the reference The Usborne Internet-linked Encyclopedia of World History or Usborne Encyclopedia of the Ancient World Internet-Linked (Skip all of the section Prehistoric World ) Day 2 Writing- Making An Outline Read pages of Benefit From Theocratic Ministry School Education Copy the notes from the box How To Prepare An Outline into your notebook. You will need this information for completing an assignment next week and several times this year. History Begins Notes*- We will be skipping the first 2 chapters of A Little History of the World by EH Gombrich because we know that history really begins with what Jehovah has taught us through the pages of the Bible. You already know the story of creation and many, many Bible Stories. Today read through pages of Insight on the Scriptures Volume 1 It starts with How We Got the Bible Graphic Features of the Promised Land. Using a Blank printed out map from copy the map you see on page 329 and how the decedents of Noah spread. Discuss with parent how all nations of men descended from these 3 men. Day 4 (answers are included with the download) History Educator s Guide Questions: 1. What were kings of Egypt called? 3. What is the type of writing that the Egyptians created? 4. Which Pharaoh built the Great Pyramid? 5. How did the Egyptians build the temples and the pyramids? 6. Describe one or two Egyptian gods. 7. What is an obelisk? Are there any Obelisks still standing today? Any located near you? Where? 9. Why is the Sphinx in the shape of a cat? Day 5 History Educator s Guide Questions: 10. Explain the Egyptian s burial rites. 11. Where can you see mummies and Egyptian art? 12. How do we know so much about Egyptian life? 13. What is the Rosetta Stone? 15. What is papyrus? 16. Which Empire lasted the longest? Egyptian or Roman? 17. What is the Pharaoh Akhenaton known for?

10 Week 2 notes: Day 1 History Research- Hint, use your Watchtower library CD to do some of the research. For example if you look up Rosetta Stone, then click on publications index, then click on index , then click on Rosetta Stone you will see several references. Here is part of what you will see: key to unlocking hieroglyphics: g89 10/22 18; it-1 688; g88 6/8 31 This tells you that there are two Awake (g) articles one from 1989 and one from 1988 on the Rosetta Stone. You also see that there is a reference to the Insight book volume 1 page 688 (it-1 688). Write your research answers in your notebook or use History Scribe pages to take notes. Research questions from Educator s Guide: 2. Find Egypt on a map. Locate the River Nile and trace its route. Today there is a manmade dam on the River Nile. What is it called? Research the dam and how it changed Egypt. 8. Challenge: Research the recent controversies surrounding ancient art that is stolen from one country and put on display in other country s museum. Did this happen with Egyptian art? 14. Challenge: Research the Rosetta Stone. Who found it, and where? How did it end up in the British Museum? How long did it take for scholars to decipher it? Day 2 Writing- Outline article After reading the article from the Awake about Egypt, write an outline in your notebook for this article. Your title is the title of the outline. Your subheadings are your main points, choose sub points to include under each main point. Use this method each time you are assigned an outline. Day 4 Literature- work with some of the ideas for writing with your literature suggested last week. Map Ancient Egypt- Draw or find a blank map of the area of Egypt. Label these geographic features: The Nile and the Delta, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea. Label Upper Egypt, (the southern half) and Lower Egypt (the northern half), Giza, Memphis, Karnak, Thebes, Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings (and Queens). 11 Day 5 History- Read Genesis Account of Joseph or listen to the audio drama: Preserving Life in the Time of Famine Writing- Character study and conflict Study the Characters involved in the story of Joseph. Write a list of characters and their character traits. Conflict- There are several areas of conflict in this story, see if you can pick out what they are. Make a list of these main conflicts, and under each one list as many as you can. Man against Man Man against Society Man against Self Man against nature For example, under Man against Man you could list: Man against Man Joseph vs. jealous brothers Jacob vs. disobedient sons (I can think of at least 2 more for this one, can you?)
