Pre-AP World Geography Summer Reading Assignment Summer 2018 Welcome to Pre-AP World Geography! The purpose of summer reading is to encourage independent reading at all levels through reinforcing comprehension skills and exposing students to a broader view of the world which will develop students as effective communicators, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. This assignment will help you begin to think spatially (to see how things are arranged across a space/place). You will be introduced to other cultures, and look at how places change over time. These concepts are important components of World Geography. This assignment will help you begin to think spatially through developing and categorizing connections in order to analyze historical events over time (WG.2A). This packet is available online (with clickable links) at the HHS website and the district website. Please submit your ESPN by September 10, (If you are taking AP Human Geography this is NOT the correct summer assignment) You will complete the Mental Map and the ESPN assignment for the book you read from one of the non-fiction titles below (some of these books are also on the PAP English I list - you may use the same book for both classes): Beyond the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo (1030L) The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig (940L) I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb (1000L) Enrique s Journey by Sonia Nazario (830L) Isaac s Storm by Erik Larson (1020L) - concentrate your ESPN on conditions during Isaac s lifetime Please note that some of the books on this list may contain mature language, situations, and themes. We encourage parents and/or guardians to preview the books. While the Lexile Framework is a scientific way to match reader with text considered the right level of challenge, the Lexile Framework does not take into account student interest and literary merit. We strongly encourage parents and/or guardians to consider readability, interest, and literary merit when helping students choose books. The HHS Pre-AP World Geography Summer Reading List was synthesized from the following sources: Student Library Journal, International Literacy Association, Texas Library Association, and Lexile.com by administrators at Hays CISD. Click on the titles to see information about the book. If you have any questions or need support for this assignment, please danielle.renteria@hayscisd.net or timothy.garrison@hayscisd.net

Mental Maps Assignment Draw a mental map of the book (or part of the book). This will be turned in on September 10th, What is a Mental Map? Helpful sites: National Geography standards About.com Geography Geolounge Examples of Mental maps Rubric: on 8 ½ x 11 paper (or larger) Examples: Neat Colorful Has a Title Represents your picture/ideas/attitudes of places and people in the book. {When you imagine the spatial arrangement of places in the book, what does it look like? Draw that.}

ESPN Assignment You will take ESPN notes over the book and then create Google Slides that categorize facts from the book using the ESPN format. The slides will be submitted through Google Classroom during the summer. Be sure to use your school Google account to create the slides. Keep your handwritten notes to turn in at the beginning of school for a grade. You will use them and the slides you create to complete a project in September. Slides required: 1 Title slide Book name, author, and your name 8 slides that cover ESPN (2 slides for each category, each with a relevant picture or map and 3-5 bulleted facts - see Example below) 1 slide sources in MLA format including the book, and any other websites where you got information. A Word of caution: Google Images is NOT a website, it is a Search Engine. It finds pictures from websites and shows them to you. To see the URL for the picture click on View Image, to visit the picture at the original website click on Visit Page. 1 slide with your answer to the question What new perspective do you have now after reading this book? EXPLAIN For a total of 11 slides Turn the slides in using Google classroom WHAT IS ESPN?

ESPN is a useful tool for categorizing facts, using the following: Economic things related to money, such as jobs, trade, economic policies, agriculture, industry, urbanization, markets, labor/workers, infrastructure Social groups of people, family, children, women/gender roles, ethnic groups, religion/beliefs, health care, science/technology that helps people, migration, social classes, cultural beliefs/values/traditions, education, population distribution/density, urban/rural/suburban Political government policies, laws, wars/conflict, gov t leaders, Organizations, alliances/strategies environmental (Natural) weather/climate, location, how people adapt to or modify the natural environment, natural resources, natural hazards, physical features Some things could be in more than one category you have to decide where you think it fits best. Example: Governments usually collect taxes to pay for education, but education benefits the society. and it leads to economic well-being. So where you would put education depends on the context. Rubric for Notes: You will take ESPN notes BY HAND (not typed) while reading the book, with page numbers noted. Divide your paper into quarters, as shown on the example. You will need to write down at least 7 facts in each category, at least 40 facts total covering the entire book; some categories will have many more facts than others, depending on which book you choose. Following the rubric, with excellent summaries covering the entire book, with all chapters covered, and a minimum of 40 facts, will earn an A on the notes. Notes should be taken in the following format: Title the notes the Title of the Book, with author s name Summarize! DO NOT copy sentences from the book. Cite the page number where you got the information EXAMPLE: First They Killed My Father, by Loung Ung

Economic No doctors or medicines in rural areas, pg 51 Work farming in fields by hand hours per day, pg 110 Children work in village garden, no schooling, pg 110 Social Street vendors selling food from carts in Phnom Penh, pg 1 Peasants have darker skin, are looked down on by business owners, pg17 Many Cambodians of Chinese descent, look different than pure Khmer (lighter skin, straight hair for Chinese), pg 45 Political Khmer Rouge soldiers are closing shops and confiscating guns, pg 21 People are encouraged to snitch on former friends, who are then taken away by Khmer soldiers, pg 46 Khmer soldiers abduct girls in the villages, pg 71 Youns (from VietNam) defeat vicious dictator Pol Pot, pg 173 environmental Sweltering heat, over 100 by mid-day, pg1 2 seasons in Cambodia -dry and rain, pg 23 Green, mountainous, forested, pg 50 Herbs, roots used for medicines for rural people, pg 52 Summarize!
