1 Gainesville Middle School Summer Reading For Rising Eighth Grade Directions: Choose and read two books from the Gainesville Middle School Summer Reading list (on the library media page) or other grade appropriate books. If you choose not to read books from the list, you may read books approved by your 8 th grade teacher, or books found on 8 th grade reading lists. After reading the books, choose a response topic (see attached list) for each book. Proper grammar, spelling, and complete sentences are mandatory. Each response should consist of at least two paragraphs. Remember to use your paragraphing skills by including a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding/transitional sentence. Responses may be typed and or neatly written on a separate sheet of paper. However, the format of the attached Reading Response papers must be the same. Grading: To turn the assignment in early as a summer reading grade, it is due by Friday, 9/8. However, GVMS 8 th grade English teachers will assign this to you during the first week of school with an extended due date for those who chose not to read over the summer. If for some reason you misplace this information, please refer to the school library s School Messenger page this summer for extra copies. Nine people came to Earth with powers beyond imagination. They planned to fight evil, but then evil starting hunting them. The Nine have to spend their lives in shadows, in places no one would look, blending in and living among humans without them knowing. The first three have been caught, and Number 4 is next. Told in a series of vignettes sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous it is the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. Few other books in our time have touched so many readers. The Selection by Kiera Cass. For 35 girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The Nazis take Lida to a brutal work camp, where she and other Ukrainian children are forced into backbreaking labor. She bonds with her fellow prisoners, but none of them know if they'll live to see tomorrow. When they are assigned to make bombs for the German army, Lida cannot stand the thought of helping the enemy. Then she has an idea. What if she sabotaged the bombs... and the Nazis? Lockwood & Co: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud. All nature of ghosts, haunts, spirits, and specters are appearing throughout London, and they aren't exactly friendly. Only young people have the psychic abilities required to see and eradicate these supernatural foes. The plucky and talented Lucy Carlyle teams up with Anthony Lockwood, the charismatic leader of Lockwood & Co

Give evidence from the story to support your answer. 12. What is the moral of the story? How does the moral apply to you and your life? 13. Why do you think the author wrote this book? 14.
