1 Gainesville Middle School Summer Reading For Rising Eighth Grade Directions: Choose and read two books from the Gainesville Middle School Summer Reading list (on the library media page) or other grade appropriate books. If you choose not to read books from the list, you may read books approved by your 8 th grade teacher, or books found on 8 th grade reading lists. After reading the books, choose a response topic (see attached list) for each book. Proper grammar, spelling, and complete sentences are mandatory. Each response should consist of at least two paragraphs. Remember to use your paragraphing skills by including a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding/transitional sentence. Responses may be typed and or neatly written on a separate sheet of paper. However, the format of the attached Reading Response papers must be the same. Grading: To turn the assignment in early as a summer reading grade, it is due by Friday, 9/8. However, GVMS 8 th grade English teachers will assign this to you during the first week of school with an extended due date for those who chose not to read over the summer. If for some reason you misplace this information, please refer to the school library s School Messenger page this summer for extra copies. How does the author create the atmosphere/mood for the setting? Give plenty of examples from the book. 6. Write about three important events that have happened in the story. Give plenty of examples from the book. 7. Were you able to guess what was going to happen next? What clues did you use? 8. Which chapter do you think is the most important to the story? Explain the significance of the chapter to the plot of the book. 9. What questions about this book would you like answered? 10. Were you able to guess what was going to happen in the end? What led you to your guess/conclusion? What proof/evidence did the author provide? How was it revealed? 11. Write about the major theme of the book. Give evidence from the story to support your answer. 12. What is the moral of the story? How does the moral apply to you and your life? 13. Why do you think the author wrote this book? 14. By reading this book, what did you discover that could help you outside of school?
