I II III IV V VI VII VIII Noor Khan Until recently, very few people had heard of Noor Inayat Khan. But in November 2012, a bronze statue of Khan was unveiled in London. So who was Noor Inayat Khan? Khan was a secret agent who took part in a dangerous secret mission against the Nazis during World War II. She infiltrated into occupied France, where she served as a radio operator, providing communications for the Allies. Noor Inayat Khan was born in 1914 in Moscow to an Indian father and an American mother. Her father moved his family to the UK and later to Paris, where she was educated. As a result, she was bilingual. This would prove very useful to her in her subsequent work as an agent. After the Nazi invasion of France, Khan escaped to England in There she was recruited to join Britain s sabotage force, the Special Operations Executive (SOE). She became the first female radio operator sent into France in The job was so dangerous that she was not expected to survive for more than six weeks. The Gestapo discovered the spy network and many spies were caught and arrested. Yet Khan continued working. Although her commanders told her to return to England, she refused to abandon her French comrades without communication. She became the last essential link with London. For three months, she single-handedly ran a cell of agents across Paris, frequently changing her appearance and name. Eventually, however, she too was captured. Following her arrest, she refused to reveal any information despite repeated torture. On 13th September 1944, Khan was shot dead at Dachau concentration camp. Her last word was liberté, or freedom. Khan was not motivated by an innate sense of loyalty to Britain. In fact, she was a great believer in Indian independence from British rule. Yet, she strongly believed that Fascism was wrong and wanted to fight against it in any way she could. Although Khan believed in non-violence, she volunteered to be in the front line, and eventually gave up her life fighting for her ideals. Her story is indeed inspirational and now, thanks to the new memorial in London, it will never be forgotten. 1 Choose the correct answer.
