2 TBLB Talking Book Newsletter Library F a l l audio books audio magazines braille DIGITAL TRANSITION UPDATE We have been working very hard making phone calls, sending letters, and sharing the great news about our new digital machines, and are now at approximately 650 digital machines issued. If you haven t gotten yours yet, and are not currently one of our prison inmate patrons, we want to hear from you! We know you will love the digital player. If you have cassette books languishing on your bedside table because you just can t get the hang of that big yellow tape player, 2 this is the machine for you! If you are an avid reader who can t get enough of Talking Books and wants to have an even easier and smoother experience, or even possibly to dip your toes into downloading books from the computer, this is the machine for you! If you re somewhere in between enjoying your cassettes but a bit unsure about this new format you guessed it, this is the machine for you! The digital book collection is now at over 3,200 titles and growing every day. Let us know what you would like to listen to I am sure we can find something for you to enjoy.
3 Remember that as of the end of 2010, all new books will be produced in digital format only, so you will need a digital player to listen to new materials. DBs [DIGITAL BOOKS] OVERTAKE RCs [RECORDED CASSETTES] Article Submitted by Ivy L. Bennett, Senior Library Assistant In what has turned out to be anything but a hostile takeover, TBLB is pleased to announce that exactly one year after the first DB was added to our collection, we are now circulating more Digital Books per month than traditional cassette books. This is all the more amazing when one considers that as of this writing we only have 3,228 titles, comprising 4,996 copies available for check out. Thank you to all our Digital Book readers and your enthusiastic embrace of the future of Talking Book Service! WE ARE POOR LITTLE CARTRIDGES THAT HAVE GONE ASTRAY... Yes, sometimes it happens that a digital cartridge will accidentally not make its way into the blue or gray box when it s mailed back to us. Then we have an empty box sitting at the library, just waiting for its missing book cartridge to come back to it. When this happens, we will call you to let you know, and we will send you a manila envelope for return of the cartridge, then re-match it, and send the happily reunited pair of book and cartridge merrily on its way to the next eagerly awaiting patron. It also happens that sometimes the wrong cartridge gets into a box (the cartridge book sent back inside the box does not match the title of the book on the box). These mis-matches also wait here at the library for their correct mates to arrive. We may call you and let you know, and you can return the other halves of the mismatched pair, so we can put each in its proper container and again, send them on their way. 3 The best way to avoid these problems is to only open one digital book container at a time, and to
4 always make sure that there is a cartridge in the box before you send it back to us. Thanks for your help in making our service as efficient as possible for everyone, so people can get their books quickly and easily without a long wait. NEW COUNTY LIBRARIAN As of late July 2010, the Fresno County Public Library has a new County Librarian. TBLB is pleased to welcome Laurel Prysiazny (pronounced Prizny ), who has already gotten the grand tour of our branch and has been very supportive of TBLB s mission so far. We also wish to thank Karen Bosch Cobb, who retired as Fresno County Librarian in April, for her many years of strong support and encouragement of the Talking Book Library, and wish her a very happy retirement. THE BIG READ FALL 2010 The Fresno County Library has been awarded another Big Read grant! Come explore with us the masterfully spooky world of Edgar Allan Poe in October and November. Events around the county will include book discussion groups, ghost walks in the Tower District and Old Town Clovis, birds of prey presentations, 4 a one-man show featuring Duffy Hudson as Edgar Allan Poe, and much more. You can click on fresnobigread.org or contact TBLB or your local public library for details. Here at TBLB, we will have a Poethemed Book Discussion Group on Wednesday, October 20, at our usual time of 2:00 PM. Our 2010 Open House, to be held Thursday, November 4, from noon to 2 PM, will also feature a Poe theme, with Jeanne Johnson presenting Edgar Allan Poe: Man of Mystery. See more details on the Open House on the attached flyer. From Around Our Four Counties CALIFORNIA COUNCIL OF THE BLIND GREATER SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY CHAPTER Article Submitted by Mary Beth Randall Hello all, I don t know about the rest of you but we sure have enjoyed the mild summer we have been having here in Fresno. Our chapter has had a picnic at the park once and several members have spent time getting together at one another s homes just to hang out and have some fun. 6
7 A few of our members went to the national convention in Phoenix, Arizona, which was a wonderful time and filled with learning and good times all in one. Several members on the home front are keeping an eye on things going on in legislation here in California that affects all of us who are blind and visually impaired, regarding quiet cars and updates to laws about training for those who use guide dogs. Being active in our local, state, and federal legislation is one of the things that is important to the CCB. For our next fund raiser, the Greater San Joaquin Valley Chapter of CCB is proud to present Dining in the Dark, a fun and educational experience. Guests will enjoy a catered meal; there will be a silent and a live auction, a demonstration of audio description for movies, and more. The event will be held on October 1, 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Piccadilly Inn - University in the Ambassador room. The address is 4961 N. Cedar Ave. Tickets are $35.00 per person, meal choices are chicken, tri-tip or vegetarian. For more information or to reserve your ticket call Mary Beth Randall at Are you all ready for the first convention in San Diego in 15 years? 7 Come and join the party! The San Diego La Jolla Marriott is now taking reservations for the CCB Fall 2010 room block for Thursday, October 28th through Sunday, October 31st at the group rate of $99 including tax. You are highly encouraged to make your room reservation immediately if you have not yet done so. Specifically, callers must state that they are making reservations for the CCB Fall 2010 convention in October 2010 at the San Diego, La Jolla Marriott Hotel. The total single or double occupancy room rate per night is $99 including tax. The hotel recommends that callers use when calling to place reservations. If anyone is interested in coming to our meetings, we meet on the second Friday of every month unless indicated from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at the Denny s on First and Shaw. The address is 1110 E. Shaw Ave. and we meet in the room at the back of the restaurant. People arrive at around 5 PM who wish to order dinner and socialize. The meeting dates for the next few months are October 8th, November 12th, and December 10th. For more information about the CCB or our meetings please call
