1 Dear Students and Parents, WELCOME TO FOURTH GRADE! We are very excited about all the wonderful things we will learn this year. We cannot wait to meet you and start our year together. As you relax and enjoy your summer vacation, don t forget to keep reading. Reading not only increases your knowledge but also improves your fluency and vocabulary. Below are the two required books each of you will read as well as a few optional books. You must read a total of three books during the summer. Required : 1. Flashback Four #1: The Lincoln Project - Dan Gutman 2. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing - Judy Blume Additional : Winter at Valley Forge: Survival and Victory - James Knight Dexter the Tough - Margaret Peterson Haddix El Deafo - Cece Bell Who was Daniel Boone? - Sydelle Kramer Revolutionary Friends: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette - Selene Castrovilla Katerina's Wish by Jeannie Mobley Counting Thyme by Melania Conklin Hooper Finds a Family: A Hurricane Katrina Dog s Survival Tale - Jane Paley Lemonade War - Jacqueline Davies Queen of the Falls - Chris Van Allsburg The Chestertons and the Golden Key by Nancy Carpentier Brown Choose one of the required books. Pretend that you are the author and write an alternative ending for the book. Your ending should be different from the one in the book, it should be how you think the story should end!

2 Choose the other required book and complete the book report form. Follow the directions attached and give as much information as you can. Take notes as you read the book to make it easier for you! Choose the last book (your choice) and complete an illustration of your favorite part. Make sure that it shows details and has color. On the back, describe what was happening in the picture and why it was your favorite part. Over the summer, please be sure to practice your multiplication facts (1-12), addition and subtraction facts, and your cursive handwriting. Remember to read as much as possible. Another way you need to prepare for 4th grade is to bring with you the necessary materials. Books and some writing supplies have been ordered and will be given to you on the first day. Shortly after school begins, a letter will be sent home showing a list of the supplies and their costs. However, you will need to bring the following with you on the first day of school: 2 boxes of tissues 1 bottle of hand sanitizer 2 containers of lysol or clorox wipes 1 pair of headphones (3.5 mm jack) 2 packs of ERASABLE red pens 2 packs of ERASABLE black pens 2 packs of number two pencils 1 pair of scissors (please use the scissors from 3rd grade) 1 picture (at least) of yourself doing something fun from the summer! Your hardback textbooks must be covered in brown paper or LARGE book socks; and your softback textbooks should be covered in contact paper. If you see these items over the summer, be sure to pick them up! In September, please write your name in permanent marker on anything you bring to school.
