1 Middle School Summer Reading List (6-8) The following books are required reading for students entering grades 6-8. Your literature teacher will cover these books in August. Your second book you will get to select from the following suggested list and work on an assignment over the summer. Assignment details are attached to this packet. 3 Middle School Summer Reading Assignment Please select one of the following assignments to turn in the first week of the school year. Most of these assignments can be done digitally or in a traditional format. Included in the description you will find some recommendations for sites but you may use whatever online tool works best for you. All sites, apps and digital tools should be previewed and approved first by your parents! This assignment will be counted as a test grade in Language Arts. Make sure the project you select conveys your detailed understanding of the book. Be as creative as you want to be and enjoy! Assignment Selections: Create a cartoon version of the book: Create a cartoon version of your book that retells the story in sequence. Make sure you introduce all main characters, and retell story events. Highlight the main ideas/problem/climax/solution/themes to prove that you are an expert of the book. Please use your favorite site, oil pastels, crayons, or animation tool. (Go Animate, Creaza, PowToon, Moovly)
4 Create a Virtual or Traditional Poster Advertisement Create a digital or traditional poster advertising your book. Be creative and sell your book to the audience. Make sure that your poster has images and text that demonstrate your understanding of the book. (Glogster.com) Create a Timeline Create a timeline that that lays out the events of your book. Make sure you introduce all main characters, and retell story events. Highlight the main ideas/problem/climax/solution/themes to prove that you are an expert of the book. (Capzles.com) Design a Webpage Create a webpage with the information from the book. You have complete creative control. Add pictures, favorite quotes, character analysis, and/or summaries to show your detailed understanding of the book. (Weebly) Mind Map Create a mind map using digital/traditional methods. Mind maps can be very extensive and detailed maps of your thought process and personal journey through the book. They should include both text and images. Google Mind Map examples before you begin! (Creaza, MindMap) Create an imovie Create an imovie that follows a book report format. Introduce characters and setting with detail. Summarize the story plot and events. This should not be an oral book report. Think more along the lines of a movie trailer. (imovie, Movie Maker)
