3 The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019 He saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5 Called to Serve For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 4 Confirmation Information Thank you, Salamat, Cám ơn, Mil gracias The Art and Environment Team of St. Elizabeth Church thanks God for all the support given us by our parishioners, enabling us to make our worship space reflect the liturgical season. A core group of volunteers decorates the church in an effort to instill more active participation in the liturgy by those assembled. Our hope is that - surrounded by beauty, through fabric, candles and plants - our parishioners will have an enhanced experience and an encounter with Christ. We are especially thankful to all the volunteers of this year: The Vietnamese group who built the Nativity scene and set up the Christmas lighting outside the church and PMC building. Quynh Nguyen helped decorate the altar with fabric for Christmas. Paula Bringas, Greg Dessel, and Bong & Rory Flores decorated the Christmas trees and entrance of the church, rectory and office. Jóvenes Para Cristo helped set up the trees. The volunteers who help our Church all year round with a weekly arrangement of fresh flowers: Kimmee Do, Trang Le, Hien Thanh La. John Bui comes weekly to clean all the statues in the church, on the altar and in the chapel. May God guide us and bless our volunteers and their families. From the Art & Environment Team The 1 st of two Confirmation retreats will be held on Saturday, January 26th for those teens in their 2nd year of preparation Teens only need to attend one of the two retreats. Teens in their 2 nd year come with their parents from: 8:30-11:30 AM and then with their sponsor(s) from 1:00-3:30 PM. The retreat will take place in the St. Elizabeth room. Mass of Reparation St. Martin 593 Central Avenue Sunnyvale, CA The annual Mass of Reparation will be celebrated this year at St. Martin, Tuesday, January 22 nd, at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Reparation remembers and prays for the over 65 million babies that were aborted from their mother's wombs since the Roe vs. Wade decision made abortions legal. We would like to urge all parishioners of St. Elizabeth s parish to set some time aside and attend this annual Mass. Are you: A practical Catholic gentleman over the age of 18? A man who wants to be more involved with church, community, Pro-Life, local council, family, and youth activities? A man who is looking for spiritual growth? A man who wants to help the needy, disabled, and less fortunate? A man who is concerned for his family s well being if anything were to happen to him? 5 S P I R I T U A L I T Y C O R N E R Sunday, January 13, 2019 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, At Baptism we were all given a name that distinguishes us from other people and that present us before them. Most of us are happy with the names our parents chose for us. Frequently parents named their children after a grandfather or grandmother whom they remember with love. At other times their children may have been named after a special friend, relative, or even after one of the parents themselves. Some people have been ridiculed or embarrassed by the name that was chosen for them. This may result from others not knowing the reason behind the name an focusing only on the way the name sounds. The names of some of the saints are difficult to spell, pronounce, and may even sound awkward at times. This doesn t mean that they aren t beautiful names. However, many people choose names of celebrities or names that are in fashion. The most important thing to remember is that we are all God s children. He loves us no matter what our name, and He calls us by name to come and follow him. I think that God, our Father, presents us at Baptism with love and hope. He had a plan for His Beloved Son when He entered the world on Christmas Day. Likewise, He has a plan for each of our lives and we most not lose sight of that plan. That is why the priest asks the parents at Baptism if they are willing to comply with and teach their child this plan that God has for their offspring. This is a responsibility and a loving commitment to work and live joyfully because our children need our prayers and testimony at all times in their lives. If we have been negligent in doing this we must start now; it is never too late to start. It is important that we not only say that we love our children, but also that we present for them and support them with joy. The prophet Isaiah refers to this when he says Here is my servant whom I uphold (Is 42:1-4, 6-7). This is reminiscent of the dreams and hopes we have of our young people: their important projects, their studies their work, and their families. Those who have lived out their Baptism promises have tried to live good lives, and have made good use of their talents will know that God and their families are always with them. They will not need to think or worry about what other think or say about their names. May God bless you and may you continue your good start to the New Year. May we receive many blessings and may we work peacefully and joyfully in carrying out what God asks of us in our baptism, our priestly, prophetic, and regal mission. God Bless you, So that no one be disturbed in these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. For even when we were among you, we used to warn you in advance that we would undergo affliction, just as has happened, as you know. (1Thessalonians 3:3-4) When you are overwhelmed by your suffering, look to the crucifix, embrace the crucifix, and then stand silently and steadfastly like Mary. In the midst of your trials, consider this suffering is nothing compared to heaven. This is God's way: blessed are the poor, those who weep, those who suffer persecution, the kingdom of heaven is theirs (cf. Mt 5:3-10). You complain that others are not grateful to you. Did you do them a favor only to be thanked by them? You complain that others constantly oppose you and dispute with you, and so impede your apostolic work. Have you forgotten the parable of the wheat and the weeds? (cf. Mt 13: 24-30) The wheat of your good works will continue despite obstacles. 6 Chúa Nhật Lễ Chúa Giêsu Chịu Phép Rửa Con Yêu Dấu! Bài đọc 1: Is 42:1-4;6-7 Trong bài đọc sau đây, ngôn sứ Isaia giới thiệu Chúa Giêsu là Ðấng Cứu Thế và là Tôi Tớ Thiên Chúa tuyển chọn. Người là ánh sáng muôn dân. Người đến tái lập chân lý và giải thoát kẻ khốn khó. Bài đọc 2: Cv 10:34-38 Thánh Phêrô xác quyết Thiên Chúa không thiên vị người nào. Ai tin Người thì được cứu rỗi nhờ Ðức Giêsu Kitô, Ðấng đã chịu phép rửa, được Thiên Chúa tấn phong, được Thánh Thần sai đi rao giảng Tin Mừng. Tin Mừng: Lc 3, Tin Mừng hôm nay thuật lại Chúa Giêsu đến sông Gio-đăng chịu phép rửa, để bắt đầu cuộc đời công khai rao giảng Tin Mừng, được Chúa Cha công nhận là Con Yêu Dấu, và Chúa Thánh Thần tấn phong làm Ngôn Sứ. T ư C C Xứ Chúa Nhật, ngày 13 tháng 1 năm 2019 Kính thưa Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em trong Chúa Kitô; Khi lãnh nhận Bí tích Rửa tội, chúng ta được đặt cho một tên Thánh. Hầu hết mọi người đều yêu mến tên Thánh mà cha mẹ đã chọn cho mình. Có người được cha mẹ đặt theo tên của ông hoặc bà mà cha mẹ thương nhớ, có người được đặt theo tên một người thân hoặc một người bạn rất yêu quý, hay có người được cha mẹ quá yêu mà đặt theo tên của chính mình. Mặt khác, cũng có người đã bị khinh miệt hoặc đã sống buồn tủi vì cái tên của mình, nhưng có lẽ điều này bị xảy ra bởi vì những người nhạo tên của họ không biết được ý nghĩa của nó và chỉ nhè vào cách phát âm. Tên của các vị Thánh không phải lúc nào cũng là tên hay, nhưng điều đó không có nghĩa là họ không mang những tên đẹp. Nhiều người thích chọn tên từ các người mẫu thời trang hoặc tên của những nhân vật nổi tiếng. Bất kể chúng ta tên là gì, có một điều quan trọng nhất mà chúng ta cần phải hiểu, đó là chúng ta là con cái của Chúa, rằng Ngài rất yêu chúng ta với cái tên được đặt đó và Ngài mời gọi chúng ta đi theo Ngài. Tôi nghĩ rằng Thiên Chúa, Cha của chúng ta, ban cho chúng ta tình yêu và hy vọng trong ngày chúng ta được Rửa tội, cũng tương tự giống như lúc Ngài giới thiệu Con yêu dấu của Ngài và chúng ta nhận thức được rằng Ngài đã an bài cho cuộc sống của chúng ta và chúng ta phải vui lòng sống theo kế hoạch của Ngài. Đó là lý do tại sao Linh mục hỏi cha mẹ nếu họ có sẵn lòng tuân giữ và dạy con theo kế hoạch của Chúa không. Đó là một giao kết yêu thương mà chúng ta không được quên, và chúng ta phải sống và làm việc trong vui tươi theo hoạch định của Chúa. Nếu chúng ta chưa làm được điều đó, hãy bắt đầu làm ngay từ bây giờ. Sẽ không bao giờ là quá muộn đâu. Truyền giáo và dạy con về Chúa luôn là điều tốt đẹp vì con cái chúng ta lúc nào cũng cần những lời cầu nguyện và chứng ngôn của chúng ta trong cuộc sống của chúng. Sẽ là một điều đáng khích lệ nếu chúng ta không chỉ nói rằng chúng ta thương yêu con cái của chúng ta, mà chúng ta còn thể hiện và vui sống điều đó nữa, như tiên tri I-sa-i-a nói với chúng ta trong yêu thương và tràn trề tự hào: Đây là người tôi trung Ta nâng đỡ (Isaia 42: 1-4,6-7), và kế hoạch tuyệt vời của Chúa để giải thoát, để chữa lành, nhắc nhở chúng ta về niềm mơ ước mà chúng ta dành cho giới trẻ, những dự án quan trọng của họ trong cuộc sống, về học vấn, về công danh sự nghiệp và về gia đình. Tôi tin rằng những ai mà sống tốt lành khi họ hiểu ra được phép thanh tẩy của mình, và đã nỗ lực hết sức để sống đạo đức thì cũng nhận ra được rằng Chúa và người thân trong gia đình đang sống với họ, để họ sẽ không bao giờ phải lo lắng về những gì mà người khác đang nghĩ hoặc đàm tiếu về tên của mình. Xin Chúa ban phước lành cho chúng ta được khởi đầu Năm Mới này thật tốt đẹp. Xin cho chúng ta nhận lãnh được nhiều hồng ân Chúa ban để sẵn sàng làm việc trong an bình và vui tươi với những gì mà Thiên Chúa đã sắp đặt cho chúng ta trong phép Thánh tẩy với sứ mệnh làm Tiên tri, làm Tư tế và làm Vua. 7 Ý cầu nguyện - Tháng Giêng Cầu cho Giới trẻ: Xin cho Giới trẻ, cách riêng Giới trẻ của Châu Mỹ La Tinh biết noi gương Đức Maria, đáp lại lời mời gọi của Chúa nhằm truyền đạt cho Thế giới niềm vui Tin Mừng. Sống Lời Chúa và Cầu Nguyện Trong Tuần Con là Con của Cha. Ngày hôm nay, Cha đã sinh ra Con. Xin cho các Mục tử trong Hội Thánh luôn hăng say hoàn thành sứ mạng của mình, là đưa dẫn muôn người đến với Đức Giêsu và qua Bí tích Rửa tội. Ta là Chúa, Ta đã gọi con trong công lý. Xin cho những Nhà lãnh đạo quốc gia biết chân thành đối thoại, và khiêm tốn lắng nghe, để từ đó biết quên mình phục vụ vì lợi ích Cộng đồng. Phần tôi, tôi rửa anh em trong nước, nhưng Ðấng cao trọng hơn tôi đang đến, và tôi không xứng đáng cởi dây giày cho Người. Xin cho những Nhà truyền giáo luôn mặc lấy tâm tình của Thánh Gioan luôn xóa mình ra không để cho nước Chúa được ngự trị. Chính Người sẽ rửa anh em trong Chúa Thánh Thần và trong lửa. Xin cho Cộng đoàn Giáo xứ chúng ta luôn ý thức được tầm quan trọng của Bí tích Rửa tội để biết sống xứng đáng là một người Ki-tô hữu như Chúa ước mong. 8 M N P Domingo, 13 de enero, 2019 Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: En nuestro Bautismo todos hemos recibido un nombre, y ese nombre nos distingue y nos presenta ante los demás, la mayor parte de nosotros estamos contentos con el nombre que nuestros padres eligieron, muchas veces recordando con cariño el nombre del abuelo o la abuela, o algún amigo o familiar querido, o tal vez sintiendo mucho cariño por ese niño o niña, le pusieron su propio nombre. Muchas personas han sufrido desprecio o han vivido tristes por el nombre que recibieron, pero quizá es porque las personas que se burlan o desprecian un nombre, no conocen su significado y solo se fijan en cómo suena el nombre. Los nombres de Santos no siempre se oyen bien, pero su significado es muy bonito, muchos eligen nombres de personajes de moda, de celebridades, pero no importa cual nombre sea lo más importante es que nos demos cuenta que somos hijos de Dios, y que con ese nombre Dios nos ama y nos llama a seguirle. El día de nuestro bautizo yo pienso que al igual que con Jesús en su bautizo lo presenta con cariño como su Hijo muy amado, nuestro Padre Dios también nos presenta a cada uno de nosotros con ilusión, sabiendo que tiene un gran plan para nuestra vida que no debe perderse. Por eso el sacerdote pregunta a los padres de familia si quieren cumplir y enseñar el plan de Dios a su hijo o hija, que es un compromiso amoroso que no debemos olvidar, que tenemos que trabajar, y vivir con alegría, y si no lo hemos hecho pues debemos comenzar, nunca es tarde, evangelizar es bueno en cualquier momento ya que nuestros hijos necesitan nuestra oración y testimonio en cualquier momento de su vida. Sería muy interesante que no sólo digamos que amamos a nuestros hijos, pero que los presentemos y apoyemos con alegría, como nos dice el profeta Isaías 1,-4,6-7 con amor y orgullo Este es mi siervo a quien sostengo y el gran plan de liberar de sanar y me recuerda los sueños que tenemos de nuestros jóvenes, sus proyectos importantes de vida, estudio, y trabajo así como la familia, y digamos el nombre de él o ella que han ido adelante con buenos proyectos, proyectos del que ha reconocido su bautismo y lucha por vivir de la mejor manera y que se sabe acompañado de familia y de Dios, creo que jamás sentirá preocupación por lo que los demás piensan o dicen de su nombre. Que Dios les bendiga y sigamos pasando un buen inicio de Año Nuevo, que recibamos muchas bendiciones y nos dispongamos a trabajar con paz y alegría en lo que nos pide Dios en nuestro bautismo en nuestra misión profética, sacerdotal y regia. Tito 3:5 Llamados a Servir Por muchas semanas hemos celebrado la aparición de la presencia divina en su forma humana. Cuando era niño, Jesús vivió con María y José, al nacer lo visitaron unos pastores y luego algunos errantes magos de Oriente. Hoy celebramos otra situación, ocurrida un tiempo después, a un grupo reunido en el río Jordán. Juan vaciló cuando le tocó bautizar a Jesús, a quien reconocía como uno más poderoso que yo. Pero hizo como Jesús se lo pidió, descendió el Espíritu Santo y una voz celestial habló a Jesús: Tú eres mi hijo, el predilecto. Jesús estaba empezando su vida pública de enseñanza y de servicio. Pronto comenzaría a llamar a otros a seguirlo. Pedro fue el primero que Jesús llamó. En la segunda lectura de hoy anuncia el centro del mensaje: la paz que traería Jesucristo, el Señor de todos. Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mucho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, donde el ropón y los regalos son más importantes que la doctrina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo creyente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a poco, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyente. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito religioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cristiano. El niño viste de ropita blanca que recuerda la presencia de Cristo en su alma, se le regala una vela que lo invita a brillar con la luz de Cristo y se le da una madrina o un padrino que le enseñará a vivir en Cristo. Calendario de enero Miércoles16: Juan Manuel Caballero Miércoles 23: Alex Medina Miércoles 30: Romelia Ortiz Para mayor información llame a Romelia al El Bautismo del Señor Bautizados con el Espíritu En el Evangelio de Lucas de hoy, cuando Juan el Bautista aclara que él no es el esperado Mesías, el Cristo, él distingue su bautismo con agua del bautismo con el Espíritu Santo y fuego que Jesús va a ofrecer. El bautismo de Juan con agua significa la renuncia a nuestros propios intereses y la apertura de nuestro corazón a Dios. El bautismo con fuego y Espíritu describe al poder de Dios entrando y transformando el corazón humano. Cuando Jesús fue bautizado con agua, él públicamente manifestó su compromiso total a seguir el camino de Dios para él. Cuando el Espíritu desciende sobre Jesús, él fue fortalecido para empezar su ministerio. En efecto, Jesús recibió ambos tipos de bautismo descritos por Juan. Él iría a bautizar a aquellas personas cuyo corazón estuvieron abiertos durante su ministerio, muerte y resurrección. Después, en Pentecostés, la nueva comunidad recibió un bautismo de Espíritu con lenguas de fuego. La Trinidad y el Bautismo El Evangelio de esta semana no solo cuenta el bautismo de Jesús, sino que describe extraordinariamente a Dios como la Santísima Trinidad: Jesús en oración, el Espíritu Santo descendiendo y la voz del Padre desde el cielo. La Iglesia naciente asoció su interpretación de Dios como la Trinidad y el Bautismo como la iniciación a la vida cristiana y a la comunidad. Los nuevos cristianos eran bautizados en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Jesús fue proclamado como el amado por su Padre y fortalecido por el Espíritu Santo para empezar su misión. La misión es un envío, aceptar una misión es aceptar ser enviado. Después de su ministerio, muerte, resurrección y ascensión, la misión de Jesús continuó por medio del Espíritu empezando en Pentecostés. El Padre envió al Hijo y al Espíritu, quienes juntos ahora envían a la Iglesia al mundo. El Bautismo, entonces, es el envío de los nuevos bautizados a unirse a la Trinidad en su misión. Nosotros los bautizados estamos fortalecidos para proclamar que todos somos los amados por Dios. Nuestro Dios trino ya está delante de nosotros en el mundo, pidiendo nuestra participación.
