1 SONSIK e-newsletter EDITORIAL Welcome everyone to the 3 rd issue, Volume 7 of enewsletter published by SONSIK (Society of Nepalese Students in Korea) 13 th Executive Committee. It gives us immense pleasure to bring up the latest edition of SONSIK enewsletter, which has proved to be a great platform to disseminate the activities of SONSIK to its members, alumni and well wishers. This issue, like all the earlier ones, is an effort to update our readers with the activities and events successfully accomplished in last trimester and activities in upcoming trimester. We have tried to incorporate the activities organized all over Korea that fits the interest of our readers. We, on behalf of SONSIK 13 th EC would like to express our gratitude to all the supporters, well wishers and members for the support and belief on the SONSIK 13 th EC. We would also like to thank all the people who have contributed for the publication of this issue. We are also eternally grateful to the advisors for their valuable suggestions that have helped us make this issue better than what it could actually have been. 2 SONSIK New Student Orientation Program- Spring Semester 2017 With the main objective of letting the new students know about challenges and opportunities for Nepalese students in South Korea and interaction among the SONSIK members, orientation program started with meet and greet at Natural Science Building of Sun Moon University at around 5 pm dated 8 th April It was followed by the dinner program where the participants got a chance to interact and be at ease with each other. After the dinner, the new students orientation and workshop began in the seminar room of the same building. Mr. Keshav Thapa, Secretary, SONSIK 13th executive committee moderated the program that was chaired by Mrs. Aarajana Shrestha, President, SONSIK 13th EC. It was a matter of great luck for us to get an opportunity to welcome SONSIK s founder President and Professor at Kathmandu University, Dr. Janardan Lamichhane, as Chief guest along with alumni of SONSIK as guests for the program. Mr. Jeevan Kumar Ban, vice president representing Region 2 welcomed the guests and all the attendees with a welcome speech. Dr. Ramesh Pandey, Assistant Professor from Sun Moon University, gave a presentation on the topic Current scenario of Nepali students in Korea: Challenges and opportunities which was very useful for new students in understanding the scenario of students and Do s and Don ts for students in Korea. The main presentation was followed by a presentation on SONSIK and Its Activities: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE from the SONSIK President. Chief Guest s experience sharing session was the most interesting moment of the whole day, where he explained how it was possible to run the SONSIK during early days of its establishment and his life during the stay in Korea where foreign students had just started coming to Korea for higher education. Quiz, poem, free talk and other activities were conducted as a workshop for new students. We believe that this kind of event will help the new student be more comfortable in the new environment and work as a platform for the students studying in different regions of South Korea to meet, know and interact with each other. It will be helpful to relay and share diverse knowledge and information based on their own experiences about the research and stay in Korea. 5 SONSIK 4 th Sports Festival, 2017 On 9 th April 2017, with great enthusiasm, multi sports fest began early in the morning, without any delay on the scheduled time. The major objective of the festival was to provide refreshment and extend friendship among the Nepalese students, alumni and seniors who have been living in various part of South Korea. There were all together 6 games played, including Basketball, volleyball, football, jokgu, bad-minton and dodge ball. First game played was jokgu (fuss ball) with great energy and enthusiasm among the participants. Immediately after starting jokgu, volleyball was also played simultaneously. After the completion of volleyball and fuss ball, lunch was taken where the participants also got moment to exchange words with each other. After having lunch, football was started on the soccer ground exactly at 1 pm. Dodge ball ball and badminton were also played simultaneously at the badminton court. Basketball was the last game to be played where all the participants cheered to boost the confidence of theirteams. After all the games were played, trophy, medals and cash prizes were distributed to the winning teams by the guests. The program was wrapped up with a Thank you message from program coordinator Mr. Jeevan Kumar Ban and closing remarks from Mr. Keshav Thapa, Secretary, SONSIK 13 th EC and Mrs. Aarajana Shrestha, President, SONSIK 13 th EC. All the participants then gathered together for group photo session and waived goodbye to each others. We believe that this kind of event will be very helpful for the SONSIK members and alumni to gather together and develop a health relation among each other. It will also be helpful for the participants to help haul down the mental and physical strain developed from continuous university and laboratory tasks. It will also help the participants to refresh and experience a change after a monotonous schedule. We hope to organize such programs frequently in the near future. 15 UPDATE!!! Guidelines 2017 for SONSIK-KUAAN Sustainable Scholarship Program In Nepal After several discussions, finally the Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SONSIK) and Korean Universities Alumni Association Nepal (KUAAN) have agreed to formally initiate a long awaited scholarship project in Nepal. The name of the program is SONSIK-KUAAN Sustainable Scholarship Program and its main objective is to honor, support and promote education of school students in Nepal, with the aim of extending mutual friendship amongst the SONSIK, KUAAN and participating schools. In addition, it provide a philanthropic network for donors who wishes to contribute for school student s education in Nepal. SONSIK-KUAAN Sustainable Scholarship (SKSS) Program is a sustainable program and administered through Scholarship Endowment/Fixed Deposit Fund in KUAAN s authorized bank account in Nepal jointly established by the effort of SONSIK and KUAAN. Guidelines for SONSIK-KUAAN Sustainable Scholarship is drafted and in process of final correction.

16 Feedback on Problems & Opportunities of Nepalese Students in Korea SONSIK 13 th Executive Committee has focused it s annual working plan to address opportunities and challenges for Nepalese students in Korea. Dr. Rajesh Chandra Joshi, a medical doctor who has been serving Nepalese community in Korea is selected in evaluation committee of KBS Television to address issues of Nepalese immigrants including students in Korea. Therefore, we requested every students and alumni to fill out the online survey form and answer problems/opportunities faced/experienced or they have seen during their study and possible strategies to solve those problems. We received total 19 responses so far and summarized as below: Opportunities: There are many scholarships for International students from Korean Government/companies/NGOs/INGOs. Very good Laboratory: Students learn new things and can do experiment/research. Opportunity to learn about Korea s development. Security (safe environment) in Korea is good. Chance to visit many conferences (national and international) and beautiful places in Korea. Transportation and services are very good. Chance to publish many papers and present in Conferences. Problems of Students: Language Problem. Most of the lectures are in Korean language. Communication Gap. Limited or No access to important information. Culture Barrier. Biasness of professor between Korean students and foreigner students Not good cooperation by professor, discrimination between Korean and foreign students. Korean lab mates are also rude towards Dependents of students are not legally allowed to work that makes difficult for students family. Professor give very Low Stipend for living in Korea Students are asked to return the part of stipend in some laboratory. Graduation criteria is not uniform and dependent on the mood of professor. Students are called by providing 100% scholarship by screening every document. 17 Congratulations to Korean Government Scholarship Graduate Award Recipients National Institute For International Education (NIIED) through the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) has been promoting the international cooperation in education by inviting talented international students to Korea for an opportunity to conduct advanced studies at higher educational institutions in Korea. For the year 2017, NIIED has listed out total 622 international students from 156 countries as the successful candidates of the second round. From Nepal, total 8 students (7 for master program and 1 for doctoral program) have been selected. CONGRATULATIONS & BEST WISHES to All! It is a great honor to say that SONSIK has a very good relation with NIIED and has been doing several academic activities in association with NIIED. 18 CONGRATULATIONS!!! NRNA-ICC-Skill Knowledge and Innovation (SKI)-Korea National Coordination Committee NRNA-ICC-Skill, Knowledge and Innovation (SKI)-Korea National Coordination Committee is finally formed with an objective to support and contribute for the development of Nepal through different projects. Dr. Sanjeev Humagain, who is also an assistant professor at Hanseo University was selected to serve as coordinator of this committee. The SKI committee consists of total 15 seniors from different field in Korea including SONSIK President as member. The meeting was organized on May 6-7, 2017 at Daecheon, South Providence of Korea by the initiation of Dr. Devi Basnet and Dr. Gyanendra Prasad Joshi. Dr. Gynendra Prasad Joshi, Dr. Amrit Poudel, Dr. Taraman Kadayat, Mr. Subash Adhikari, Dr. Jeeban poudel, NRNA-ICC Korea representatives Mr. K.P Sitoula and Mr. Binod Kunwor presented their idea/project focused in Nepal. We CONGRATULATE and hope that the SKI committee will also help to strengthen SONSIK students in near future.
