Determine an author s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose, analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others, analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.

7 Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis Under My Definition, write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below My Definition under Synonym write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under Antonym write two words that are opposite.

8 Vocabulary Analyze: breaking down information with supporting evidence. Determine: firmly decide. Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created

9 Vocabulary Point of view: is the perspective from which things are considered, which shows the opinion, or feelings of the individuals involved in a situation. First person P.O.V. involves the use of either of the two pronouns I and We. Second person P.O.V. uses the pronoun you. Third person P.O.V. uses pronouns like he, she, it, they, or a name.

10 Vocabulary Argument: a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong. Conflicting: to be in opposition of something of someone.

The judicial organization of the United States is the institution which a stranger has the greatest difficulty in understanding. He hears the authority of a judge invoked in the political occurrences of every day, and he naturally concludes that in the United States the judges are important political functionaries; nevertheless, when he examines the

15 Anticipatory Set nature of the tribunals, they offer at the first glance nothing that is contrary to the usual habits and privileges of those bodies; and the magistrates seem to him to interfere in public affairs only by chance, but by a chance that recurs every day.

The author feels that the United State Judicial system is set up unlike any other. In this system, it is rather hard to completely understand the role of the judge.
