3 SECTION A: COMPREHENSION QUESTION 1 Read BOTH TEXT A and TEXT B and answer the set questions TEXT A PLACE OF GOLD 1. Mention Johannesburg and the first thing that springs to mind is that it is the hub of the African economy. 2. Many people flock to the city to try and make ends meet. The 2011 census results indicated that Gauteng s population grew by 31 percent to 12, 8 million people in 2011, up from 9, 4 million people a decade ago. In 2013, thousands will flock to the City of Gold in their numbers to seek greener pastures. Over the past year alone, research has shown that many people are packing their bags and moving to Johannesburg to escape their poor rural communities, in the hope of landing jobs. 3. According to the authorities migration from rural areas is a worrying phenomenon as the cities can t sustain so many people. It has also been found out that very few people who come to Joburg with expectations of a better life find jobs. 4. Bula Music Marketing manager Sipho Dlamini says that people come to their offices with ambitions of making it begin the music industry. People come as far as Kwazulu Natal, Limpopo, and the Eastern Cape to try and make it in music. They need to understand that this won t be the case for all of them. Luckily, many recording companies have opened offices in other provinces, says Sipho. 5. He adds that the worst part is that people come to Joburg without making prior arrangements for accommodation and food. If you go to Park Station you are bound to find someone begging for food telling you that they came here without any cash. We honestly need to educate people about the dangers of this because many of them will end up becoming victims of crime. They fail to understand that fame comes through years of perseverance. 6. Kwazulu Natal gospel artist Thinah Zungu, who recently won the Best Male Gospel Artist at the Crown Gospel Awards, says he knows first-hand how though it is to make it in Johannesburg. Thinah says that when he first arrived in the city he thought it would be smooth sailing. He says when he got to Joburg it was not a walk in the park. Many doors were shut in my face and I had to go for days without food, Thinah says. 4

4 7. Thinah s advice to people is as follows: Nothing ever comes easy in this city. If you come here thinking that all is going to happen in the blink of an eye, you had better think again. You have to educate yourself first, getting the necessary qualification, following your passion for the entertainment industry later. 8. The SABC building in Johannesburg s Auckland Pack is frequented by people desperate to make it in the entertainment industry. An SABC radio DJ says most people come to the SABC without prior arrangements to see someone. When you ask them if they ve come for auditions they tell you that they just want to be actors or TV presenter. 9. I always make them aware that there is more to being on TV or radio than just turning up. Education is vital and there are a number of other careers that they can follow besides one in the media industry, says the DJ Refer to the title. 6 TEXT B [Collaborative consumption] How many things do you own? Thousands? Tens of thousands? How many of them do you use on a given day? Chances are it s a tiny percentage. The idea behind collaborative consumption is that the idle stuff can be used by someone who needs it. Scores of websites around the globe can now help you borrow or rent a power tool from someone in your neighbourhood (Snap goods), swap books (Read it Swapit) or even find unused land on which you can grow vegies (Landshare). TEXT C WATER IN THE HUMAN BODY Many people believe that drinking large quantities of water improves the skin. There is no reliable evidence to prove this. The water you drink, is absorbed across your body and only a small amount reaches your skin. There is also no basis for the common belief that you need eight glasses of water per day to be healthy. Thirst should be your guide. Factors like activity levels, humidity and climate all play a role. Some people believe that a water filter clears water from harmful substances. But dirt collects in the filter and turns it into a breeding ground for bacteria. Cleaning your filter hourly could solve this, but water purification is safer. Bottled mineral water is also not necessary safer than tap water. Many companies buy tap water, filter or purify it and then sell it with claims that it comes from exotic sources. It is untrue that drinking water prevents heat stroke. A very high body temperature causes heat stroke, and not the 0 lack of water. Drinking too much water can even kill you because it dilutes the sodium or salt concentration in your body. The amount of water in a human body is not as large as many people think. Water makes up 50% of a woman s body weight and 60% of a man. The body loses water regularly, but not only through sweating. TEXT F SOUTH AFRICA S GOLDEN BOY 1 When we asked our seventeeners who this year s hottest guy was, the response was unanimous: Chad le Clos the bronzed Durban swimmer whose gusty victory and stunning smile stole our hearts at this year s Olympic Games. The 20 year old achieved the unthinkable when he bit American legend Michael Phelps in the 20m butterfly event. As he stood on the podium, crying tears of joy as the South Africa flag was hoisted and the national anthem played, it was clear that he didn t only win a gold medal: he also won over an entire nation. Since that day at the end of July, Chad s life has been a whirlwind of TV and magazine shoots, interviews, appearances, events and loads of travelling. 2 Chad handles all the success and attention without a hint of complain. Arriving at the seventeen photo shoot 20 minutes early, he has only one request: Can I have a cup of coffee please? I ve been on the road since 7am and I m a little tired. How many sugars? Four please. I have a sweet tooth, he smiles. I can t help it. 3 Despite his newfound A-list status, Chad is incredibly polite and down-to-earth, friendly and open. He also leaner and taller than you would expect and unbelievably better looking than on camera. He is laid back and doesn t seem to mind all the attention his looks elicit. 4 His passion for swimming is obvious and, when he speaks about the race that solidified his spot in sports history his eye light up. He s been swimming for more than half his life and started competing professionally in Today he has multiple medals stored up in his safe in Durban. 5 Chad is one of the top youth athletes in the world. In full-sentence answers, incorrect spelling should be penalized if the error is in the language structure being tested. Where an abbreviation is tested, the answer must be punctuated correctly. Sentence structures must be grammatically correct and given in full sentences/ as per instruction. QUESTION 3: ANALYSING AN ADVERTISEMENT 3.1. (Elastoplast) Plasters. (1) 3.2. Different fonts.
